2. A declaration page as shown below:
Chapter 11: Minor Thesis/Project
3. A table of contents.
4. A table of figures (where relevant).
5. An acknowledgment page (where desired).
6. A summary of approximately 200 words; this summary (or abstract) should also be
emailed to Dr. Winikoff by your supervisor when the thesis is ready for examination.
7. The introductory chapter.
8. The literature review chapter.
9. A series of chapters describing your work.
10. A conclusions chapter.
11. A list of references.
12. Appendices, if any.
Page numbering should be in Roman numerals commencing from the title page, and
Arabic numerals commencing with the summary.
About the literature review
It is imperative that you understand the extreme importance of a comprehensive
literature search. Imagine a situation where you have not undertaken an adequate
literature search after which you then develop the main body of your research.
Subsequently, an examiner claims that:
• you are not referencing sources; and
• your work is not original!
The examiner’s claim is based on the existence of a well-known publication which is
almost identical to your work. You were negligent in not doing an adequate literature
search. Your supervisor may not have been aware of all relevant references and may
have wrongly assumed that your search was adequate. It may be too late to salvage the
thesis unless a case can be made that you have verified an existing theory and that this
verification is useful.
The moral should be clear.
Declaration
I certify that all work on this thesis was carried out between
February 2006 and June 2006 and it has not been submitted for
any academic award at any other college, institue or university. The
work presented was carried out under the supervision of Dr ...
who proposed ... and who .... All other work in the thesis is my
own except where acknowledged in the text.
