1. Use safety latches or door knob
covers on closet doors to prevent
your child from becoming trapped
inside closets.
2. Secure any unstable furniture to the
wall. Generally if it is taller than it is
wide, it should be secured.
3. Keep the cot,
beds and other
furniture away
from windows.
Use window
grilles and
secure them so
that they will not
open more than
10 centimetres.
4. Always cover the wastebasket in the
bedroom. Never place dangerous
materials such as plastic
bags, small or sharp items
in the wastebasket.
5. If you are using bunk
beds for your children,
never allow children
younger than 6 years
top bunk.
Safety in the
BedRoom
6. Make sure the top and bottom bunk
have a guardrail next to the wall
and at both ends of the bed. The
top bunk should also have a
guardrail on the outer side.
7. Check to make sure guardrails
extend at least 12 centimetres above
the mattress.
8. Make sure the mattresses are well
secured.
9. Do not allow children to play on
bunk beds.
10. Install smoke detectors outside the
door. The alarm should be loud
enough for you to hear when you
are in the room. Test it regularly
and replace the batteries at least
twice a year.
11. Ensure that there is an exit/escape
route in case of a fire. One window
grille should be able to be opened
from the inside. Determine an
assembly area for the whole family
in case of an emergency.
