An area church sustained 

a burglary and theft 

on Saturday, prompting a 

law enforcement investigation 

into the incident. 

According to Monroe 

County Sheriff’s Deputy 

James Fischer on Sunday, 

the church was the Tellico 

Baptist Church on 

Ballplay Road. 

Fischer said he met with 

a church official, who 

showed him a pried-open 

back door of the church’s 

fellowship hall. Fischer 

said the door and its frame 

were damaged and broken. 

Inside, the electrical 

panel was open and all the 

electrical switches had 

told him several items had 

been taken out of the fellowship 

hall, including 

$200 worth of food, cooking 

utensils valued at $20, 

two coffee makers worth 

$50 each, $150 worth of 

percolator coffee, and a 

$25 crock pot.

poll released on Sunday 

showed Republican presidential 

candidate Mitt 

Romney leading rival

points, 42 percent to 27 

percent in Florida, a crucial

The Commerce Department 

said on Monday 

that Americans’ incomes 

rose in December by the 

most in nine months, but 

consumer spending remained 

flat. The announcement

from his bedroom. 

Sweetwater Police Patrol 

Officer Michael Pippin 

said he took a report 

regarding a stolen cell 

phone on January 24. A female 

driver said the device 

was a $650 Exercify Phone 

that was removed from 

her car. 

Fischer said he responded 

to Big Creek 

Road on January 24 to 

check out a reported burglary 

at a home. The 

homeowner said she had 

been out of town for two 

months and returned to 

find her door kicked in 

and several property items 

gone, including a $500 flatscreen 

television, a $200 

flat-screen television, a 

$2,500 fireplace, and a 

$500 matching washer and 

dryer.

another reported theft, 

this one on Hill Loop in 

Madisonville. A homeowner 

said thieves hit his 

house, taking a $200 

printer and a $200 coffee 

table.

said she was 

dispatched to Rhyne Road 

in Sweetwater on Wednesday, 

January 25, in reference 

to a theft. A female 

at a residence told her a 

male stole $100 worth of 

her clothes and $30 cash.

Brookshire said a Highway 

411 resident reported 

on January 25 a missing 

115,000-BTU portable 

heater valued at $400.
