A new NBC-Marist
poll released on Sunday
showed Republican presidential
candidate Mitt
Romney leading rival
Newt Gingrich by 15
points, 42 percent to 27
percent in Florida, a crucial
primary state. Lee
Miringoff, director of the
Marist Institute for Public
Opinion at Marist College,
said should Romney
pull off a victory in the
Sunshine State, it could be
a “glide path’ to the GOP
nomination.
A Quinnipiac University
survey released on
Monday gave Romney 43
percent support of likely
GOP voters, placing Gingrich
with 29 percent.
Meanwhile, at least ten
persons died overnight in
a multi-vehicle wreck on
Interstate 75 in Florida on
Sunday. Four to five commercial
vehicles and ten
passenger vehicles piled
up just south of
Gainesville.
The Commerce Department
said on Monday
that Americans’ incomes
rose in December by the
most in nine months, but
consumer spending remained
flat. The announcement
underscored
the notion that unless incomes
grow more rapidly,
consumers will cut spending
even further.
Even if it’s been a
nATIOnwIDE
warmer-than-usual winter
thus far, Alaska truly has
one good cold spell on its
hands. On Monday, Anchorage
continued to
shiver through one of the
coldest Januarys on record
and Fairbanks recorded 50
degrees below zero. Further
inland, Fort Yukon hit
62 below on Sunday, closing
in on its record of
minus 78.
And could a new
method of male birth control
be on the way? Researchers
at the University
of Missouri said on Monday
it’s not a pill, not surgery,
and not latex, but
ultrasound. The method
works on rats, scientists at
the school said, adding
that it should work on humans,
as rodents are most
always much more fertile
than men.
On Monday, Russia’s
had invited Syrian authorities
to Moscow for talks to
by 2060 and of the
The Beat Goes On...
As Reported to the Officers
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Deputy James Fischer
said he investigated a theft
report in Madisonville on
Tuesday, January 24. A gun
owner told Fischer that he
was missing a $500 Taurus
semi-automatic handgun
from his bedroom.
Sweetwater Police Patrol
Officer Michael Pippin
said he took a report
regarding a stolen cell
phone on January 24. A female
driver said the device
was a $650 Exercify Phone
that was removed from
her car.
Fischer said he responded
to Big Creek
Road on January 24 to
check out a reported burglary
at a home. The
homeowner said she had
been out of town for two
months and returned to
find her door kicked in
and several property items
gone, including a $500 flatscreen
television, a $200
flat-screen television, a
$2,500 fireplace, and a
$500 matching washer and
dryer.
Sweetwater Police Patrol
Officer William Poe
said he arrived at a Powell
Avenue address on January
24 to look into a burglarized
vehicle and a stolen
checkbook.
Fischer was still on pace
on January 24, responding
to a Highway 72 call that
detailed a burglary at a residence
just off the road.
The property owner said
his back door had been
pried open and the following
items were taken: a
$300 Marlin .30-30 leveraction
rifle, a $450 Marlin
lever action .44-caliber
rifle, a $350 Marlin .22-caliber
rifle, a $550 Ruger
Mack semi-automatic
handgun, a $450 Ruger 9mm
semi-auto handgun,
$225 worth of 9-mm ammunition,
a $100 Glock
15-round magazine, a $30
Glock 30-round magazine,
$3,000 gold ring with a diamond
cluster, and a $500
rope necklace with a diamond
pendant.
Sheriff’s Deputy Derrick
Graves said he was
dispatched to Coker
Creek on January to take a
theft report. Meeting
with a property owner,
Graves said a list of items
taken from the owner included
$200 worth of
metal roofing, a $600
pressure tank, a $100
fence post, and $50 worth
of hog wire.
Sheriff’s Captain Bill
Johnson said a Sweetwater
resident reported a $600
cash theft on January 24
that occurred after the resident
picked up a
Knoxville woman, took
her home with him, stayed
the night, and took her
back to Knoxville the next
day. The resident said the
woman later told him over
the phone that she took
his money.
Fischer said that on Jan-
uary 24 he investigated yet
another reported theft,
this one on Hill Loop in
Madisonville. A homeowner
said thieves hit his
house, taking a $200
printer and a $200 coffee
table.
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Deputy Marla Richeson
said she was
dispatched to Rhyne Road
in Sweetwater on Wednesday,
January 25, in reference
to a theft. A female
at a residence told her a
male stole $100 worth of
her clothes and $30 cash.
Sheriff’s Deputy Clint
Brookshire said a Highway
411 resident reported
on January 25 a missing
115,000-BTU portable
heater valued at $400.
Sweetwater Police Patrol
Officer Nick Farrell
said he responded to Valley
Trailer Park, where a
domestic dispute over
children took place. A
husband and wife had
varying stories and very little
markings denoting an
actual fight.
Sheriff’s Deputy Brady
Bowers said he arrived at a
home on the Cherohala
Skyway to look into a report
of a stolen car on Jan-
uary 25. The car owner
said her vehicle disappeared
while she slept, describing
it as a 2003
Hyundai Accent. Later,
Bowers said he arrested an
intoxicated Donny Ray
Bryant who was found
with the $2,000 car.
Sheriff’s Deputy Ray
Haynes said he charged
Sheila Ann Haney of Edwards
