were hard-nosed & competitive. 

Left education in 1968 to 

become Assistant Plant Manager 

under Pryor Hunt at the 

Stokely Van Camp facility in 

Tellico Plains. Became Plant 

Manager upon Hunt’s retirement 

and worked there until 

the plant was closed. Briefly 

worked for Quaker Oats after 

the property was sold and finished 

his working career as 

Farm Manager when William 

B. Stokely III regained the 

Stokely Farm. A loving husband, 

adored father & loving

referred to as “the sole suspect” 

in the case. 

Not quite so fast, it appears. 

Suspect, yes; sole, 

no. 

On the heels of the article, 

the BUZZ found out 

that while Kennedy is the 

only person to be charged 

thus far in the homicide, 

she is by no means the 

“sole” person who has 

aroused interest in the 

case. 

In fact, there are more

of interest” is the 

description – who are pursuing 

the investigation further 

even as Kennedy’s 

trial looms in two weeks. 

As a matter of policy, 

the BUZZ uses the term 

“suspect” to refer to someone 

who has actually been 

charged with an offense, 

so semantically speaking, 

“suspect” is a proper term. 

But by no means does the 

phrase infer that Kennedy 

is the “only” person under 

investigation. Officials in 

the case said the investigation 

is “an organic ongoing 

pursuit” of 

determining the actual details 

of Miller’s killing and 

who is truly responsible 

for his death. 

And to additionally 

clarify a second paragraph 

that appears on page 3 of 

the same issue – referring 

to the FBI interviewing 

Kennedy about “possible 

murders in Indiana,” it was 

Kennedy who wanted to 

instead talk about the 

Miller incident and not 

the FBI. In fact, when 

Kennedy turned the Indiana 

conversation toward 

Miller, the FBI did not 

have any interest in the 

local homicide. Kennedy 

declined to have her attorney 

present during the 

FBI interview and freely 

talked of her own accord, 

the BUZZ learned.

the act of theft, the result 

of which led to Shelfer’s 

festive identification.
