Kennedy
(Continued from pg 1)
In the paragraph, Jessica
Kennedy, the female
charged with the first-degree
murder of Sweetwater
businessman Jim
Miller two years ago, was
referred to as “the sole suspect”
in the case.
Not quite so fast, it appears.
Suspect, yes; sole,
no.
On the heels of the article,
the BUZZ found out
that while Kennedy is the
only person to be charged
thus far in the homicide,
she is by no means the
“sole” person who has
aroused interest in the
case.
In fact, there are more
- Well-woman Exams
- Prenatal Care
- Well-Child Exams
- Childhood Vaccines
- Family Planning
• Quality Care
• Clean, friendly environment
423-442-6624
3459 new Highway 68 Madisonville
than just one individual
which have caught the attention
of officials – “persons
of interest” is the
description – who are pursuing
the investigation further
even as Kennedy’s
trial looms in two weeks.
As a matter of policy,
the BUZZ uses the term
“suspect” to refer to someone
who has actually been
charged with an offense,
so semantically speaking,
“suspect” is a proper term.
But by no means does the
phrase infer that Kennedy
is the “only” person under
investigation. Officials in
the case said the investigation
is “an organic ongoing
pursuit” of
determining the actual details
of Miller’s killing and
who is truly responsible
for his death.
And to additionally
clarify a second paragraph
that appears on page 3 of
the same issue – referring
to the FBI interviewing
Kennedy about “possible
murders in Indiana,” it was
Kennedy who wanted to
instead talk about the
Miller incident and not
the FBI. In fact, when
Kennedy turned the Indiana
conversation toward
Miller, the FBI did not
have any interest in the
local homicide. Kennedy
declined to have her attorney
present during the
FBI interview and freely
talked of her own accord,
the BUZZ learned.
set priorities. Tough decisions
are awaiting us. I call
it ‘tough love.’ But we cannot
go on spending and
spending like there’s no
tomorrow.”
Parts of Obamacare
people want, Mayfield
said, but the way the
health overall was “put together”
needs correction.
“For instance, the right to
choose one’s own doctor is
too limited. We need to
replace parts of the law
that won’t work with
things that can work.”
The main problem of
the new health care concept
is that it places small
businesses with the task of
“shouldering the burden”
of the cost of the health
care bill, he said, adding
that “small businesses are
the backbone of our nation
and they will not sur-
“Unless it is changed,”
Mayfield said, “small business
in America will go
into a tailspin. We need to
change, repeal, and replace
Obamacare.”
Mayfield continued to
praise “Small Business
America.”
“Right now, we have
too much government,”
he said. Things always go
better without government
intrusion. Take Amtrak.
When part of it was
privatized, it became profitable.
The part that the
government ran had to be
subsidized. Government
is not efficient in what it
does.”
Mayfield called private
enterprise “imaginative.”
“The American entrepreneurs
must be supported,”
he said. “It is only
through hard work and
diligence that the country
has become what it is.
And it has not been easy.”
Mayfield’s phone visit
was brief and he rang off
to meet another group in
Hamilton County, where
he was attending to lastminute
activities before
election Day.
“I have high hopes for
this area,” he said. “It has
always been close to my
heart.”

ermen. If you night fish,
you only get a little relief
from the heat. An hour of
hard fishing and you look
like you've fallen in the
Dwain Mercer
Believe it or not, in less
than a month dove season
will be here. I'm willing to
week of season than will
be fired the rest of all the
bird seasons combined.
Opening day is the same
in Texas as Tennessee,
September 1. In Texas, the
number of festive hunters
on Day One will be
around 250,000. Tennessee
hunters will be
close to the same.
You can bet ammunition
manufacturers love
Opening Day. I usually
shoot three to five boxes
of shells the first two or
three days. That’s 125 shells
if I go through five boxes.
I'm kind of cheap! Most
hunters will shoot ten
boxes or more. If 200,000
hunters average six boxes,
that would be 30 million
shells. Out of that many
shots someone is bound to
get a dove. Remember,
you need a migratory bird
permit.
I don't know if the heat
is hurting the fishing or it
is just beating up the fish-
for catfish. Their usual
40- and 50-pounders didn't
show up but they managed
four cats in the
afternoon outing.
Bass fishing is pretty
good. You'll catch fish
maybe not the size you
want but still a bass is a
bass. In Gary Joe's Thursday
nighter out of Toqua,
McFall and Jackson took
first place with 10.35
pounds. They also got
lunker with a 5.95-pound
largemouth. Gibson and
Hawkins came in second
with 2.96 pounds.
In John's Friday nighter
out of Toqua, Marty
Whitehead took first with
15.3 pounds. He also got
lunker smallmouth a sixpound
monster. Jeff Webber
was second with 9.9
pounds. Johnny got lunker
largemouth a 3.5-pound
fish.
In the McKee Outdoor
Monday nighter on Chilhowee,
Webb and Neughn
won first with 3.1 pounds.
They got lunker (you
guessed) with a 3.1-pound
with 2.3 pounds.
Charged by the detective
division of the Monroe
County Sheriff’s
Department with theft of
property and criminal
trespass was Christopher
Aaron Shelfer, 34, of Warren
Street, Madisonville.
The division said
Shelfer unlawfully entered
property on Acorn Gap
Road on July 20 and took
a generator valued at $250,
loading it into his car and
driving off with it. The
entry was without the
knowledge or permission
of the owners of the generator.
Detectives said video
security cameras caught
the act of theft, the result
of which led to Shelfer’s
festive identification.
Sequoyah Class Of 2002 Reunion
Sequoyah High School Class of 2002 will host its 10year
reunion on Saturday, October 6, at 6 p.m. at Acres
Verde in Englewood.
“The class officers and I are excited about our 10year
reunion,” said Heather Yates Byers, Sequoyah High
School Class of 2002 president. “In its heyday Acres
Verde was a bustling dairy farm. Today, the barn has
been reincarnated into an event space, but still pays
homage to its original function of sheltering dairy cows.
We feel this rustic, country setting is the perfect venue
for us to gather and reconnect.”
The first 40 tickets are being sold at a discounted
rate and can be purchased for $20 by visiting www.sqhsclassof2002.wordpress.com.
Tickets will increase in
price after the first 40 tickets are sold.
According to Fox News
on Wednesday, wasteful
spending and high living
off the taxpayers’ dime by
the General Services Administration
in recent
months and years at questionable
conferences is apparently
more widespread
than initially found, as a
committee headed by
Florida GOP Representative
John Mica learned
that the federal government
partygoers went wild
and were festive at as
many as 77 conferences
underwritten by Uncle
Sam and his American taxpayers.
Records showed
more than 3,700 employees
receiving bonuses of at
least $1,000 just to attend
the conferences, at a cost
of $3.6 million to U.S. taxpayers.
Only days after blasting
the Chick-Fil-A restaurant
chain on its president’s objection
to same-sex marriage,
Chicago Mayor
Rahm Emanuel caught
flak of his own on Tuesday,
when an influential Baptist
minister and a
Catholic cardinal struck
back, saying the churches
of the city supported Dan
Cathy’s traditional view of
the American family as
one headed by a father and
mother, the biblical definition
of “the family unit.”
Emanuel earlier said
“Chick-Fil-A’s values were
not Chicago’s values.”
According to a new
Quinnipac University-
Take the H&R Block Income Tax Course to learn how to
prepare taxes like a pro. Class times and locations are
flexible to fit your current job, school and family schedules.
Not only will you learn a new skill, you could earn
extra income as a tax professional.*
NATIONWIDE
CBS News-New York
Times poll released on
Wednesday, President
Obama leads Mitt Romney
among likely voters in
Ohio, Pennsylvania and
Florida. The poll showed
Obama with a six-point
lead both in Ohio and
Florida and a festive 11point
lead in Pennsylvania.
Appealing to the Environmental
Protection
Agency, cattlemen and
other livestock producers
asked for relief on Tuesday,
alleging that it was becoming
increasingly difficult to
compete for corn with
ethanol producers at a
time of ultra-high prices
and drought. The EPA
did not answer the producers
who said the EPA
had the power to temporarily
reduce the
amount of ethanol required
to be mixed into
gasoline for vehicles.
After months of urging
supporters to donate
money to his re-election
campaign and saying his
Republican challenger
Mitt Romney would likely
outpace him in fundraising,
President Obama
went to his own hip on
Tuesday and donated
$5,000 – the federal maximum
amount allowed per
person – into his war
chest. “I’m not just talking
the talk,” Obama said,
“I’m walking the walk.”
In sports, give it up for
Elaine Kiffin and the festive
Southern California
Trojans as on Tuesday
Penn State star tailback
Silas Redd announced he
was bolting State College,
joining backup safety Tim
Buckley in the exodus
from the tainted child sex
abuse scandalized school
who transferred to North
Carolina State on Monday.
Redd gained 1,200 yards
last season with the Nittany
Lions.
Following a sharp increase
in July, gasoline in
the United States hit $3.50
per gallon for the first
time this summer, AAA
said on Tuesday. After the
average price nationwide
rang up $3.94 a gallon in
April – when oil topped
$100 per barrel – gas
began to drop on the heels
of the weakening global
economy and fell to $3.26
on July 2, but started to
rise again as oil rose and
drivers began to burn
more fuel on summer road
trips.
And University of
Kansas researchers said on
Wednesday a fake smile
might be better for you
than no smile at all. A
study concluded that
holding a facial position
akin to a festive smile,
whether genuine or not,
lowers heart rates after a
stressful situation.
