Reader’s Forum
Dear Editor:
There must be substantial
validity to the claims,
which are being touted by
many well-informed people,
that the “fair tax” idea
is the best thing since
sliced bread.
I understand it’s a national
sales tax and would
be paid to the cashier at
the checkout counter or
wherever a transaction is
completed. The proponents
call the impending
legislation “fair tax” because
it treats all citizens
the same. That is how we
pay our Tennessee state
taxes; our cost of living is
low and fiscally we are
good as almost any in the
nation.
I’ve heard it espoused
that if a fair tax law were
WIL-SAV DRUGS
1121 Highway 411
Vonore
884-6274
adopted, it would jump
start the economy, create
myriad jobs, eliminate income
tax, and thus annihilate
the IRS. It is also
believed that prices of
American-made goods
would drop dramatically,
there would be no significant
increase in the cost of
living, the economy would
grow 10 percent the first
year, exports would grow
at least 25percent, and
capital spending would increase
some 70 percent.
It is easy to understand
that under a fair tax plan
illegal immigrants, even
crooks, thieves, and tax
cheats would not be able
to avoid paying tax as they
spend their ill-gotten
gains. Several other advantages
are being touted by
the fair tax advocates.
I believe America needs a
simpler, better, and
cheaper way to collect her
taxes. I want our congress
to work toward implementing
the fair tax plan.
There is more information
According to most new
media outlets on Saturday
– 11 days before Election
Day – the “Road to the
White House” is an eightstate
route, where less
than three percentage
points separate President
Obama and challenger
Mitt Romney. The states
– Colorado, Florida, Iowa,
Nevada, New Hampshire,
Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin
– are bona fide
“toss-ups,” outlets reported.
On Friday, the Navy
said 24 of the larger ships
in and around southeastern
Virginia naval bases,
including the aircraft carrier
USS Harry Truman,
began preparations to
move out of the Norfolk
NATIONWIDE
Naval Station and avoid
Hurricane Sandy. Other
smaller ships were being
secured at the base, the officials
said.
Meanwhile, in the face
of the looming megastorm,
refineries along the
East Coast put emergency
measures in place as at
least six facilities could be
victims of Hurricane
Sandy. The six represent
1.19 million barrels of
gasoline per day, or seven
percent of the U.S. total,
the storm’s threat boosting
fuel and heating oil
prices in New York trading
going into the weekend.
At the same time on
Saturday, the massive
slow-moving hurricane
pushed north toward the
aim at the Carolinas and
looking ahead to Cape
Cod. Officials ordered
evacuations of low-lying
coastal regions while setting
up inland shelters for
thousands of persons fleeing
the system’s wrath.
A new Associated Press
poll that was made public
on Friday said racial attitudes
in the United States
had not improved in the
four years since Barack
Obama became president,
as a slight majority of
Americans express some
prejudice toward black
persons. In 2012, the AP
found 51 percent of all
Americans now harbor
anti-black attitudes, compared
with 48 percent in a
similar 2008 survey.
A promotions company
in Dallas that paid cyclist
Lance Armstrong over $7
million in bonuses for winning
his sixth Tour de
France title in 2004 demanded
on Friday that
Armstrong return the
money. The International
Cycling Union, the sport’s
governing body, earlier this
past week stripped Armstrong
of his wins and
banned him from the
sport after the U.S. Anti-
Buffalo police announced
on Saturday the
seizure of 640 marijuana
lollipops at a Thursday
party attended by University
who also ceded to officers
leaf marijuana, cocaine,
and $13,000 cash. The
came from California,
where medical pot is legal.
In sports, two things.
One, the Associated Press
preseason basketball poll
that was released on Friday
installed Indiana on
top, followed by
Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio
State, and Michigan, with
the only other SEC team –
Florida – sitting pretty at
number ten; and two, the
Giants sprang to a 2-0
World Series lead Thursday
night in San Francisco,
shutting out the Tigers in
Game Two 2-to-nothing.
The third game of the fall
classic was scheduled for
Detroit Saturday night.
Make that three things:
the No. 12 Bulldogs of
Georgia forced six Florida
turnovers Saturday
evening, upsetting the No.
3 Gators in Jacksonville 17-
9. Tennessee lost 38-35 to
South Carolina, which lost
Gamecock star Marcus
Lattimore to a right knee
injury; Texas A&M beat
Auburn 63-21; and Missouri
ran past Kentucky
33-10.
And if you are trying to
diet and drop a few
pounds, what foods are
never ever mentioned by
so-called experts in weight
loss? Well, according to
Fox News Magazine on
Friday, start with mayonnaise,
which has 100 calories
and 10 grams of fat in
every spoonful. Ketchup?
One fourth of a bottle is
straight sugar. Barbeque
sauce? Two tablespoons,
100 calories and ten grams
of sugar. Ranch dressing?
One fourth cup and you
get 220 calories and 22
grams of fat. (What’s left?
Party Chairman Chip Forrester
and Dr. Mary Headrick,
Democratic
candidate for the Third
Congressional District of
the United States. Opening
comments that welcomed
local party officials,
elected officeholders, and
supporters of the party
came from Judy Lee, president
of the party’s
women’s club, who also introduced
Forrester.
“He has been the chairman
of the state party for
the past four years,” Lee
said. “He is a graduate of
the University of Chicago,
where he studied politics,
economics, and law. He
joined the campaign of Al
Gore after he moved to
Tennessee in 1985 and later
became chief of Al’s staff.”
Addressing his audience,
Forrester spoke of
“needs.”
“The need for young
people in the state Democratic
Party,” he said, “the
need to ‘capture’ and relate
President Obama’s successes
over the past four
years, and the need to
compactly tell people just
what he’s done for our
country since becoming
president.”
Forrester said he had
found “just the right
words” to convey what
Obama has meant to
America, but first he reminded
the party aggregation
in the Hiwassee
school’s cafeteria how
Obama “had put the country
back on track,” how he
had “saved thousands of
jobs in Tennessee,” how
“he had passed Obamacare,”
how he had
brought about “equal pay
for women,” and how
Obama had made “college
affordable for students.”
“But how do you put all
of this on a bumper
sticker?” Forrester asked.
“How do you succinctly
explain the president’s
successes? Well, I’ve got it.
I have it on a bumper
sticker, and I’ve got plenty
of them, these bumper
stickers, and it is ‘Obama
Got Osama.’ Obama Got
Osama. That says it all.”
Forrester said the battle
for the nation’s presidency
in 2012 was a fight for “the
soul of the country.” He
said United State voters
were “at a crossroads.”
“This is Political Math
101,” he said, continuing.
“Republicans subtract and
Republicans divide, but
Democrats practice addition.
Republicans divide
along racial, ethnic, class,
and gender lines. But Democrats
welcome people
outside the mainstream
and add them to the country
and to the party.”
Forrester, however, said
the number one issue in
next month’s election was
the economy.
TAX FREE!
“But remember, President
Obama rescued the
auto industry and he saved
over a million jobs,” Forrester
said. “By his actions,
he’s shown he wants
to strengthen the middle
class, because the middle
class built this country.
The middle class is this
country. President Obama
wants to return us – the
middle class - to hard work
because hard work pays
and because being responsible
is always rewarded.”
Forrester said the middle
class “built this country.”
“In 2008, we changed
the guard,” he said, ending
his speech, “but in 2012 we
guard the change.”
Afterward, Headrick,
assuming the podium,
echoed Forrester.
“Our biggest problem
as Democrats is that our
electorate is not engaged,”
she began. “So many voters
do not know the candidates
and do not
understand the issues.”
Headrick, like Forrester,
said she believed
$3 per class
October 29, 2012
that “young people”
needed “to become involved.”
“The party needs young
people,” she said. “But
what the country also
needs is not a Republican
president or a Republican
Congress. If our grandparents
Murphy, 19, of Old Slag
Road, Vonore.
Pike charged the two
men with spotlighting and
shooting two deer from a
public road in the Vonore
Industrial Park on October
18.
According to Pike,
Crowder and Murphy had
been driving their truck in
the park, looking for deer.
Pulling into the parking
lot of the fire hall, one of
the two shot a deer after
spotlighting it.
Leaving the animal, the
duo left in the truck and
returned around 30 minutes
later and shot a second
animal. An
ambulance crew observed
the incident, Pike said.
The crew gave members
of the Vonore Police
Department a description
of the truck and an officer
located the truck on Old
Slag Road and stopped it,
holding Crowder and
Murphy and summoning
Pike.
Sweetwater Claws Past Sequoyah
Allen Roberts
The Sweetwater Wildcats
traveled across the
ridge into Chiefs territory
Friday night and took
away a big victory in front
of a packed house. The
contest, a huge rivalry
game, was hard fought on
both sides and was intense
to the very end. But
Sweetwater came away
Re-Elect
Madisonville City Alderman
with a 14-6 win, claiming
second place in the district.
Sequoyah received the
opening kick-off but three
plays later the Chiefs were
forced to punt, giving the
ball to the Wildcats at
their 29-yard line. From
there, Sweetwater went on
a 13-play 71-yard scoring
drive that led to Eli Ar-
wood scoring the touchdown
on a 20-yard run.
Garrett Zickgraf's extra
point kick was good, and
with 4:25 left in the first
quarter, the Wildcats led
7-0.
The rest of the first half
belonged to the defenses.
Neither team found the
end zone again. However,
the Wildcats looked as if
they might add another
score, driving deep into
Chiefs territory during the
second period, but a
missed field goal attempt
kept Sweetwater off the
board. Sequoyah also
threatened late in the second
quarter after a nice
pass from Brett King to
Blake Huffman for 41
yards gave the Chiefs the
ball inside the Sweetwater
20-yard line, but a holding
call and a big sack by Arwood
ended the threat. At
the half, the Wildcats led
7-0.
Sweetwater received the
ball to start the third quarter
and with the ball on
their 40-year line the
Wildcats marched down
the field behind the running
game of Arwood, Jordan
McGaughey, and
Hunter Humphreys. But
the Chiefs defense stiffened
and held the Wildcats,
forcing a 34-yard field
goal attempt, which was
no-good.
With the ball on its 20yard
line, Sequoyah went
on a 14-play 80-yard scoring
drive, picking up six
first downs on big plays
from Garrett Dalton,
Austin Lunsford, and
Drew Carson. Casey
Coon scored the touchdown
from one yard out,
but the Chiefs missed the
extra-point, and with 1:20
left in the third quarter,
Sweetwater led 7-6.
The Wildcats answered
on their next possession.
The ball on their 40- yard
line, the Wildcats went on
a 13-play 60-yard scoring
drive. It seemed as if the
Chiefs were going to stop
Sweetwater for they
forced third and long
three different times in
the drive but Wildcats
quarterback Andrew Barr
made big plays when he
needed to, picking up crucial
first downs, and keeping
the drive alive. With
the ball on the Chiefs 10yard
line, Arwood broke
loose up the middle, scoring
the touchdown and
the point-after kick was
good and Sweetwater increased
its lead to 14-6.
Sequoyah would get one
last chance, though. The
Chiefs drove into Wildcats
territory from their
39-year line, picking up
three first downs but the
Sweetwater defense held,
and on a fourth-and-long,
Nick Wicker intercepted a
King pass at the two-yard
line, which the Wildcats
the ball, and the game.
The final score was 14-6.
Sweetwater finished
second in the district, improving
its record to 7-3
ahead of a probable home
playoff game.
The Chiefs record
dropped to 6-and Sequoyah
finished third in
the district. The first
round of playoff will no
doubt be a road game.
Times, dates, location,
and opponents will be announced.
