Dailey
(Continued from pg 1)
“We shared everything
over the years,” Betty said.
“She could make me laugh
when I was the most unhappy
or miserable. Rooster
will be missed by a lot
of people.”
According to a report
filed by Monroe County
Sheriff’s Deputy Chase
Nipper, a neighbor identified
as Perry Philpott,
spotted smoke coming
from Dailey’s Church
Road home. He hurried
to the residence and found
Rooster standing in the
doorway of her burning
house and wrapping her in
his jacket carried her to his
vehicle, where he called
dialed 911.
Nipper said he arrived
around 12:30 p.m., finding
the home fully engulfed in
flames. Several men were
fighting the fire with
water buckets and they directed
Nipper to
Philpott’s truck, where he
found Dailey with burns
to her arms, chest, head,
and to the right side of her
body.
Nipper said Dailey
communicated with him,
giving him her name and
age. An ambulance with
Monroe County EMS arrived
and began to treat
Dailey’s burns.
“Rooster was the captain
in charge of all our
cousin gang, the Garretts
and McDaniels,” said
also of Madisonville. “She
gave us orders and we
obeyed, and we loved her.
We were double cousins,
and she lived with us at
times when we were
younger. That’s our precious
bond. To know her
was to love her.”
Investigators on the fire
scene did not determine
the cause or the origin of
the fire. Nipper said paramedics
treated and then
transported Dailey to
McGee-Tyson Airport in
Alcoa, where she was
flown to Nashville.
The homeowner, Bill
Dailey, a son, said he had
not been at home at the
time of the fire.
“I grew up with Bill, but
I remember Rooster serv-
ing us lunch in primary
school,” Larry Mason of
Mason’s Furniture told the
BUZZ. “As kids we would
call her ‘Rooster’ because
we thought it was funny
that she had that name.
She would cut up and kid
with us, but we knew
