Sweetwater passed away 

on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 

at Sweetwater Hospital 

after a lengthy and courageous 

battle with cancer, 

his children at his bedside. 

We thank God for his grace 

and mercy and to know 

that he feels nor more pain

R.H. was a loving son born 

to Henry and Lucille Johnson

was the 1st of 4 children. 

After graduating from 

Sweetwater High School, 

he proudly joined the 

United States Army and 

served his country for over 

20 years. During his military 

service, he completed 2 

tours of duty during the 

Vietnam Conflict and received 

numerous military 

commendations. After retirement 

from the United 

States Army, he joined the 

Monroe County Sheriffs 

Department, Madisonville, 

TN and later became the 

Sheriff from 1978 - 1994. 

During his service to Monroe 

County, he gave compassion, 

strength, 

friendship, leadership, and 

respect to the office he 

held. R.H. was a member 

of Notchey Creek Baptist 

Church in Madisonville, TN. 

He was a Christian man 

who loved the Lord and his 

Church. Proceded in death 

by his parents, Henry and 

Lucille Johnson; mother of 

his children, Peggy Crabtree 

Johnson; and sister - 

in-law Evelyn Johnson, He 

is survived by his daughter 

and son-in-law Cyndi and 

Steve Kyker, son and 

daughter - in - law Robert 

Harvey (Bob) and Penny 

Johnson, all of Sweetwater.

Fierce clashes hit Syria’s 

commercial capital of 

Aleppo for a fourth day on 

Tuesday with regime 

forces claiming rebels 

took heavy losses as some 

areas experienced protests 

calling for the fall of government. 

The capital of 

Damascus appeared to be 

in the hands of the regime, 

the state news agency reported. 

On Wednesday, President 

Bashar al-Assad sent 

thousands of troops surging 

toward Aleppo to 

backup air attacks that 

were pounding rebel fighters 

from the air. The 

move appeared to engulf 

the country’s largest city in 

total warfare in putting 

down the revolt that targeted 

the city as well as 

Damascus.

Three satellites found 

that 97 percent of Greenland 

– the land mass second 

only to Antarctica for 

its volume of ice – has undergone 

a recent thaw 

never before seen in 33 

years of satellite tracking, 

NASA scientists reported 

on Tuesday. Experts said 

over four days earlier this 

month, Greenland’s ice 

sheet, which covers 

683,000 square miles, 

went from 40 percent 

thaw to a near entire thaw. 

French officials said on 

Wednesday that a crash of 

a helicopter in the southeastern

Eggplant, valued for its 

taste and sponge like texture, 

is a late summer vegetable 

with a deep rooted 

history. Originating as a 

wild plant in India, the Chinese 

were the first to cultivate 

eggplant for 

consumption. The plant 

later spread to Europe and 

was originally grown purely 

for decorative purposes, 

due to its bitter, sour taste. 

Later, in the 18th century, 

new varieties of eggplant 

were developed, causing 

this vegetable to gain culinary 

appeal. Today, eggplant 

is a popular vegetable 

grown worldwide. Although 

available year round, eggplant 

peaks from July thru 

October, for flavor and affordability. 

A member of the nightshade 

family, which includes 

tomatoes, bell 

peppers and potatoes; 

eggplant grows on vines. 

While eggplant in the classic 

oval shape and dark 

purple color is the most 

popular variety; eggplant 

can be found in a variety of 

shapes and colors. Other 

varieties include white, 

black or green eggplant, 

found in spherical to long 

and narrow shapes. 

Eggplant is a low fat, low 

calorie food. It is rich in vitamins 

and minerals and is 

a powerful source of 

flavonoids like chlorogenic 

acid and caffeic acid. Research 

has shown that 

these nutrients, along with 

a healthy well balanced 

diet, may help fight cancer 

and protect brain cells. 

When choosing eggplant, 

look for those that are 

smooth, shiny, firm and 

heavy for their size. The 

stem should be deep green 

in color and the skin should 

spring back when lightly 

squeezed. Avoid eggplant 

that contains soft spots, 

wrinkled skin, or discoloration. 

To store, fresh eggplant 

can be kept in a cool dry 

place for up to two days. 

For longer storage, place 

whole unwashed eggplant 

in the crisper drawer of the 

refrigerator for five to seven 

days. To freeze, blanch or 

steam sliced eggplant. Dry

eggplant in beaten eggs, 

then in bread crumb mixture

baking sheet. 

Bake at 350 degrees for 20- 

30 minutes or until golden 

brown. Remove eggplant 

from oven and top each

paraphernalia, and possession 

of Schedule IV phentermine 

was Barbara A. 

Tucker, 40, of Belltown 

Mill Road, Tellico Plains. 

Charged with possession 

of Schedule II 

methamphetamine for resale, 

initiation of the meth 

manufacturing process, 

and possession of drug 

paraphernalia was Raburn 

N. Brackett, 41, of 

Church Street, Madisonville. 

And charged 

with possession of Schedule 

II meth for resale, initiating 

the process to 

manufacture meth, and 

possession of a police 

scanner to facilitate a 

felony was Kevin S. Burris, 

26, of Bank Street, Tellico 

Plains. 

An additional charge of 

theft over $1,000 levied by 

the Monroe County Sheriff’s 

Department’s detective 

division hit Melton. 

According to Wear, an 

investigation pinpointed 

Melton in room four of 

the Town and Country 

Motel on Highway 411 

around 4:30 a.m. Outstanding 

warrants awaited 

her, so Wear and other officers 

targeted the room, 

finding Melton in the 

bathroom, and took her 

into custody. 

Also inside the motel 

room were Tucker, Burris, 

and Brackett. 

In plain view in the 

bathroom sink, Wear said, 

was a syringe containing a 

substance that Melton 

claimed. The four then 

said there was nothing else 

illegal in the room. 

Wear said, however, 

that a search turned up 

several items used in the 

manufacture of meth, including 

a shake bottle with 

a black substance inside it 

and a hose running from 

its cap, another bottle 

with a multi-layer liquid, a 

bottle of lighter fluid, rock 

salt, coffee filters, a funnel, 

aluminum foil, sandwich 

baggies, and the contents 

of a cold pack in a pill bottle. 

Also found were three 

individually packed baggies 

holding a white powder 

substance of probable 

meth that totaled approximately 

0.8 grams and a set 

of digital scales. 

Wear said he field- 

tested the syringe and 

found its contents to be 

cocaine. 

In a case inside the bedding 

he found four individually 

packaged baggies 

of suspect meth that totaled 

1.3 grams, white powder 

of probable cocaine 

that totaled 0.4 grams, a 

white and blue pill of suspect 

phentermine, a glass 

smoking pipe, and a credit 

card with Tucker’s name 

on it. 

While inventorying 

Burris’ vehicle, Wear said 

he found a police scanner 

inside it. 

Earlier in the night, 

Wear said he found 

Melton in the Krystal 

parking lot in the back 

seat of a car. She told him 

her name was Juanita 

Melton when he questioned 

her about the possibility 

of her being 

Autumn Melton. A jail 

booking sheet that Wear 

picked up showed Autumn 

Melton with a tattoo 

on her right arm that 

said “Almond,” and the female 

he had spoken with 

had the same tattoo.

Kennedy, has been 

charged with the first-degree 

murder of Miller, who 

was the chairman of the 

county’s election commission 

at the time of his 

death on July 17, 2010. His 

burned body was found in 

the trunk of his charred 

car on Sands Road. 

Kennedy has additionally 

been charged with 

robbery, arson, and abuse 

of a corpse. 

On Wednesday, before 

Special Judge Walter C. 

Kurtz, defense attorney 

John Eldridge of Knoxville 

argued that Kennedy had 

been intimidated into a 

confession, though witnesses 

that included Tennessee 

Bureau of 

Investigation agents and 

officers with the Monroe 

County Sheriff’s Department 

testified that

Kennedy freely provided 

statements regarding how 

Miller died and what persons 

were present when he 

was shot on Creek Road. 

“But the story kept 

changing,” said Sheriff’s 

Captain Lieutenant Doug 

Brannon. “She recanted

changed who was there at 

the scene of the murder, 

but one thing was ever 

constant: she was always 

there.” 

In the seven hours the 

hearing encompassed, numerous 

individuals named 

aloud in court, individuals 

who may or may not have 

had a part in the homicide, 

but persons that 

Kennedy allegedly identified 

as participating in the 

murder of Miller. 

Two male suspects who 

were in jail in Monroe 

County when Kennedy 

was an inmate allegedly 

struck fear in the woman, 

one of which would issue 

threats when she was 

being moved about inside 

the facility. 

In a viewing of a videotape, 

one described by 

TBI Special Agent Barry 

Brakebill as “re-enactment” 

of the murder, 

Kennedy described how 

she watched Miller die by 

three shots as he bent over 

and looked inside his car 

trunk. 

“You should have seen 

the look in his eyes when 

I pulled the trigger,” one 

male was quoted as saying 

by Kennedy. 

As the hearing neared 

5:30 p.m., Kurtz called a 

recess, saying the court 

would resume on Thursday.

fill in the blanks of what it 

was like before they left

In less than two days 

Monroe County lost two 

great men. Donnie Davis, 

who was one of the best 

smallmouth fishermen I 

have ever known, passed 

away Sunday. He and Jeremy 

gave us the pleasure 

of seeing monster bags of 

smallmouth over the 

years. He always had a

him to be, Leonard 

Whitehead passed away 

on Monday. 

Leonard loved to fish, 

especially for crappie. He 

spent a lot of time with 

me at the Bait Shop. The 

whole time I knew him he 

battled with health problems, 

but he never complained. 

He always 

worried about others 

more than himself. He 

would always give you a 

hug and say "Love Ya" 

every time he had to leave.
