increasing by an average 

rate of 20 percent every 

four years, the Board of 

Trustees at Hiwassee College 

has taken the bold 

step to reduce its cost of 

attendance by $6,000 per 

year which equals $24,000 

for a baccalaureate degree. 

Families from across the 

country will now have a 

greater opportunity to 

provide their children 

with a private, four-year 

degree at a small and safe, 

Christian-based college located 

at the base of the 

Smoky Mountains.

with the Common Core 

Leadership Council, a 

group of educators from 

across the state which will 

help lead the implementation 

of the Common Core 

State Standards into all 

public schools in Tennessee. 

The group will 

help develop plans for various 

aspects of transitioning 

to the new standards. 

This one-year appointment 

will allow Vance to 

continue her work with 

the special education population 

here in Monroe 

County while lending a 

voice for those students in 

regard to the implementation 

of the new standards. 

Vance said this is an excellent 

opportunity for her to 

collaborate with educators 

throughout the state to 

help maximize the opportunities 

for special education 

students as the state 

standards change. 

Evans has been chosen 

as an English Language 

Arts Core Coach. In this 

role, she will spend the 

summer teaching other 

high school teachers 

throughout East Ten- 


nessee about the new 

standards and helping 

them find creative ways to 

bring the new information 

into their classrooms. 

Evans will complete extensive 

training before beginning 

the new position. 

Evans said she is eager to 

learn the new teaching 

strategies and help make 

the transition easier for 

the many high school 

teachers with whom she 

will be working. 

Monroe County Board 

of Education is honored 

to have two educators 

helping lead this initiative 

on the state level. Both 

Vance and Evans will remain 

in their current positions 

while completing 

these additional roles.

Denver on Thursday, “resistant 

starches” – types of 

carbohydrates that “resist” 

digestion in the small intestine 

and enter the large 

bowel, or colon, in about 

the same form as they entered 

your mouth – can 

stave off colon cancer and 

ease inflammatory bowel 

disease and other digestion 

problems. The 

starches are found in seed 

hulls, in parts of corn and 

beans, and in room-temperature 

rice and pasta and 

they promote “good bacteria,” 

even better than 

“fiber,” killing precancerous 

polyps, regulating 

blood sugar, improving insulin 

sensitivity, and helping 

maintain healthy body

Boaters Rescued by Coast Guard 

Auxiliary Near Caney Creek Marina 

Tellico Village Floatilla Seeks 

Volunteers With Interest in Boating 

On July 4 2012, at approximately 

11:30 p.m., the 

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary 

vessel Guardian arrived 

on scene in the nick 

of time to assist a 27-foot 

Sea Ray cruiser from sinking 

on the Tennessee 

River. The crew of the 

Guardian was awarded the 

Auxiliary Commandant 

Letter of Commendation 

Medal for their outstanding 

achievement in the 

rescue of two adults and 

two children aboard the 

sinking Sea Ray. 

The primary mission of 

the Guardian on the 

evening of July 4 was to 

support state and local authorities 

in maintaining a 

safety zone in the vicinity 

of the annual fireworks 

display along the Clinch 

River. After the conclusion 

of the fireworks display, 

the Guardian headed 

to her home port. As she 

approached the Caney 

Creek Marina, the crew 

spotted a Sea Ray cruiser 

dead in the water, listing to 

starboard, and taking on 

water due to a major outdrive 

failure. 

Water had covered the 

batteries and much of the 

engine rendering the Sea 

Ray without power or operating 

bilge pumps. 

Water was filling the Sea 

Ray faster than her crew 

could bail. 

The crew of the 

Guardian, consisting of 

coxswain Edmund Smith, 

owner-operator William 

White, and crew member 

Tom Murphy, all members 

of Tellico Village Flotilla in 

Knoxville. realized the 

severity of the situation 

and the potential for loss 

of lives and property. The 

Guardian fastened a line 

to the bow of the Sea Ray 

and towed the vessel to a 

nearby dock. 

William White was at 

the helm of the Guardian 

while the Sea Ray was in 

tow and found it difficult 

to maneuver his vessel 

with the Sea Ray listing 

heavily to the starboard 

aft. Within 10 minutes of 

taking on the tow, the Sea 

Ray and her crew were 

safely ashore. 

If it were not for the 

quick and decisive actions 

of the Guardian crew, the 

Sea Ray would have sunk 

in the Tennessee River requiring 

her crew of two 

adults and two children to 

abandon ship in the late 

night hours of the July 4th 

holiday. 

Most Coast Guard 

Auxiliary patrols are routine. 

However, occasionally 

Coast Guard Auxiliary 

members are presented 

with an opportunity to 

make a real difference in 

the lives of their fellow 

man. This is one of those 

times. The crew of the 

Guardian is honored to be 

part of Team Coast Guard 

and will forever remember 

that their actions may 

have saved lives. 

The Tellico Village 

Flotilla serves the communities 

surrounding Tellico 

Lake. They routinely patrol 

Tellico, Ft. Loudon, 

and Watts Bar Lakes. 

Tellico Village Flotilla 

members are volunteers 

who come from neighboring 

communities. The 

flotilla is in need of men 

and women who have an 

interest in boating and are 

willing to serve their country 

and community as part 

time volunteers in a wide 

range of mission areas. 

Boating experience is 

not necessary; all training

Wear said he found the 

pair’s Ford Fiesta traveling 

south at 75 miles per hour 

in the northbound lane of 

Highway 411 near the city 

limits, a 45-mile-per-hour 

zone. When he fell in behind 

the Ford, Bramlett 

declined to stop and sped 

on for another two miles, 

entering the city’s bypass. 

At 411 and Isbill Road, 

Police Sergeant Adam 

Russell deployed stop 

sticks and disabled the 

right side tires of the car, 

Wear said. With assistance 

from the Monroe 

County Sheriff’s Department, 

officers took Bramlett 

into custody. 

Wear said Bramlett 

smelled of alcohol and 

spoke with slurred speech 

and blinked about with 

bloodshot eyes. He had 

trouble standing and walking 

and believed he was in 

Chattanooga and headed 

to Ringgold. 

Bramlett failed sobriety 

testing and blew a .16 percent 

blood alcohol, twice 

the legal limit. 

Gilreath, meanwhile, 

also smelled of alcohol and 

said, slurring, that he was 

“drunk” and had tried to 

get Bramlett to stop the 

car again and again and 

was in fear of his life in the 

flight from the law.

The two men then 

pulled the male outside, 

put him face down on the 

structure’s porch and 

began hitting and choking 

him. 

Wilburn said the victim 

showed marks from the 

assault.

private college accessible 

to every student regardless 

of their financial situation.” 

Beginning with the Fall 

Semester of 2013, the tuition 

and fee rate for students 

at Hiwassee College 

will be $13,320 per year regardless 

of what state they 

call home. The College 

has also reduced their 

room and board rate to 

$6,320 dollars annually. A 

residential student could 

now attend Hiwassee College 

for $19,640 per year 

including tuition, fees, 

room & board, a savings of 

$24,000 over four years. 

According to Businessweek, 

the delinquency rate 

on student loans stands at 

an all-time high. By reducing 

the cost of attendance, 

Hiwassee College gives 

more students the opportunity 

to graduate with as 

little student loan debt as
