FRIDAY
Monroe County Educators
to Help Lead New Initiatives
Two Monroe County
educators have been selected
to help implement
the new Common Core
State Standards. Amanda
Vance, Special Education
Supervisor, has been chosen
as a representative for
the Common Core Leadership
Council, and Janie
Evans, SQHS Graduation
Reducing Tuition by $6,000 Per Year
Coming together as one, students celebrate the tuition
decrease at Hiwassee College alongside the
Board of Trustees. Pictured are: (L to R) John
BUZZ Adjustment
The name “Harry Lee
Ervin Jr,” which appeared
on page 5 of the Wednesday
issue of the BUZZ
should have been “Harry
Lee Ervin Sr.” This was a
typing error, and for any
embarrassment to Harry
Lee Ervin Jr or his family
Amanda Vance Janie Evans
and friends the BUZZ
apologizes and is happy to
make the correction.
At a time when the
price to attend college is
increasing by an average
rate of 20 percent every
four years, the Board of
Trustees at Hiwassee College
has taken the bold
step to reduce its cost of
attendance by $6,000 per
year which equals $24,000
for a baccalaureate degree.
Families from across the
country will now have a
greater opportunity to
provide their children
with a private, four-year
degree at a small and safe,
Christian-based college located
at the base of the
Smoky Mountains.
In an interview, Board
of Trustees Chairman,
Karl Jordan, stated, “The
Educators
(Continued from pg 1)
Coach, was chosen as an
ELA Core Coach.
Vance will be working
with the Common Core
Leadership Council, a
group of educators from
across the state which will
help lead the implementation
of the Common Core
State Standards into all
public schools in Tennessee.
The group will
help develop plans for various
aspects of transitioning
to the new standards.
This one-year appointment
will allow Vance to
continue her work with
the special education population
here in Monroe
County while lending a
voice for those students in
regard to the implementation
of the new standards.
Vance said this is an excellent
opportunity for her to
collaborate with educators
throughout the state to
help maximize the opportunities
for special education
students as the state
standards change.
Evans has been chosen
as an English Language
Arts Core Coach. In this
role, she will spend the
summer teaching other
high school teachers
throughout East Ten-
March 1, 2013
nessee about the new
standards and helping
them find creative ways to
bring the new information
into their classrooms.
Evans will complete extensive
training before beginning
the new position.
Evans said she is eager to
learn the new teaching
strategies and help make
the transition easier for
the many high school
teachers with whom she
will be working.
Monroe County Board
of Education is honored
to have two educators
helping lead this initiative
on the state level. Both
Vance and Evans will remain
in their current positions
while completing
these additional roles.
The White House on
Thursday denied that one
of its advisors had threatened
famed Watergate
journalist Bob Woodward
after he published an article
in the Washington Post
challenging President
Obama’s version of events
NATIONWIDE
on the government’s sequester.
Woodward said a
White House aide sent
him an email saying he
would “regret” his comments
regarding Obama’s
attempt “to re-write history”
regarding how the
sequester would affect the
country.
Meanwhile, the Government
Accountability
Office reported on Thursday
that two high-tech
luxury jets the FBI said
were needed in the fight
against global terrorism
had instead been used to
ferry Attorney General
Eric Holder and FBI Director
Robert Mueller and
other officials in almost
700 “non-mission” trips
between 2007 and 2011,
racking up $11.4 million in
expenses. The GAO said
one in five trips were
purely for “personal
travel.”
The American Foundation
for Equal Rights confirmed
on Thursday that
Clint Eastwood had joined
over 100 Republicans in
support of same-sex marriage,
opposing California’s
ban on permitting
gays and lesbians to marry.
Officials described Eastwood
as a longtime Republican
with strong
libertarian leanings who
had become “increasingly
vocal politically.”
Struggling with declining
sales and decreasing
traffic, Olive Garden management
said on Thursday
it would be introducing a
Officials with the National
Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health
reported on Thursday that
boosting the humidity in
your home could reduce
the ability of the flu virus
to infect you, as flu is often
spread in the air and when
the virus hitches a ride on
a water drop, it goes immediately
to the floor,
compared to viruses that
hang around in the dry air
for hours just waiting to
infect someone. A study
suggested that a 43 percent
(or higher) humidity
could cut the bug’s threat
by 15 percent.
From the world of dogs,
two items: (1) A Colorado
military veteran challenged
on Tuesday a
judge’s decision to turn
over his service dog Dutch
for euthanization after it
reportedly bit a woman
who veteran Jeremiah
Aguilar said provoked the
dog; and (2) a protective
pit bull dog who remained
with a three-year-old child
who wandered away from
his home in South Dakota
refused to leave the kid’s
side when rescuers arrived
and it held off several persons
until the child’s father
showed up and took
charge of the loyal bowser.
And according to the
University of Colorado
Denver on Thursday, “resistant
starches” – types of
carbohydrates that “resist”
digestion in the small intestine
and enter the large
bowel, or colon, in about
the same form as they entered
your mouth – can
stave off colon cancer and
ease inflammatory bowel
disease and other digestion
problems. The
starches are found in seed
hulls, in parts of corn and
beans, and in room-temperature
rice and pasta and
they promote “good bacteria,”
even better than
“fiber,” killing precancerous
polyps, regulating
blood sugar, improving insulin
sensitivity, and helping
maintain healthy body
weight, researchers said
through a mouthful of succotash.
World Day of Prayer
Boaters Rescued by Coast Guard
Auxiliary Near Caney Creek Marina
Tellico Village Floatilla Seeks
Volunteers With Interest in Boating
On July 4 2012, at approximately
11:30 p.m., the
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary
vessel Guardian arrived
on scene in the nick
of time to assist a 27-foot
Sea Ray cruiser from sinking
on the Tennessee
River. The crew of the
Guardian was awarded the
Auxiliary Commandant
Letter of Commendation
Medal for their outstanding
achievement in the
rescue of two adults and
two children aboard the
sinking Sea Ray.
The primary mission of
the Guardian on the
evening of July 4 was to
support state and local authorities
in maintaining a
safety zone in the vicinity
of the annual fireworks
display along the Clinch
River. After the conclusion
of the fireworks display,
the Guardian headed
to her home port. As she
approached the Caney
Creek Marina, the crew
spotted a Sea Ray cruiser
dead in the water, listing to
starboard, and taking on
water due to a major outdrive
failure.
Water had covered the
batteries and much of the
engine rendering the Sea
Ray without power or operating
bilge pumps.
Water was filling the Sea
Ray faster than her crew
could bail.
The crew of the
Guardian, consisting of
coxswain Edmund Smith,
owner-operator William
White, and crew member
Tom Murphy, all members
of Tellico Village Flotilla in
Knoxville. realized the
severity of the situation
and the potential for loss
of lives and property. The
Guardian fastened a line
to the bow of the Sea Ray
and towed the vessel to a
nearby dock.
William White was at
the helm of the Guardian
while the Sea Ray was in
tow and found it difficult
to maneuver his vessel
with the Sea Ray listing
heavily to the starboard
aft. Within 10 minutes of
taking on the tow, the Sea
Ray and her crew were
safely ashore.
If it were not for the
quick and decisive actions
of the Guardian crew, the
Sea Ray would have sunk
in the Tennessee River requiring
her crew of two
adults and two children to
abandon ship in the late
night hours of the July 4th
holiday.
Most Coast Guard
Auxiliary patrols are routine.
However, occasionally
Coast Guard Auxiliary
members are presented
with an opportunity to
make a real difference in
the lives of their fellow
man. This is one of those
times. The crew of the
Guardian is honored to be
part of Team Coast Guard
and will forever remember
that their actions may
have saved lives.
The Tellico Village
Flotilla serves the communities
surrounding Tellico
Lake. They routinely patrol
Tellico, Ft. Loudon,
and Watts Bar Lakes.
Tellico Village Flotilla
members are volunteers
who come from neighboring
communities. The
flotilla is in need of men
and women who have an
interest in boating and are
willing to serve their country
and community as part
time volunteers in a wide
range of mission areas.
Boating experience is
not necessary; all training
is provided. It is only necessary
to have a desire to
be a part of something
Arrested
(Continued from pg 1)
landed in the jail’s drunk
tank as well.
Charged by Madisonville
Police Patrol Officer
David Wear with
driving under the influence
(DUI), felony evading,
reckless
endangerment, and speeding
was Nathan Edward
Bramlett of Rossville,
Georgia.
Wear charged James M.
Gilreath, 24, also of
Rossville, with public intoxication
(PI).
Wear said he found the
pair’s Ford Fiesta traveling
south at 75 miles per hour
in the northbound lane of
Highway 411 near the city
limits, a 45-mile-per-hour
zone. When he fell in behind
the Ford, Bramlett
declined to stop and sped
on for another two miles,
entering the city’s bypass.
At 411 and Isbill Road,
Police Sergeant Adam
Russell deployed stop
sticks and disabled the
right side tires of the car,
Wear said. With assistance
from the Monroe
County Sheriff’s Department,
officers took Bramlett
into custody.
Wear said Bramlett
smelled of alcohol and
spoke with slurred speech
and blinked about with
bloodshot eyes. He had
trouble standing and walking
and believed he was in
Chattanooga and headed
to Ringgold.
Bramlett failed sobriety
testing and blew a .16 percent
blood alcohol, twice
the legal limit.
Gilreath, meanwhile,
also smelled of alcohol and
said, slurring, that he was
“drunk” and had tried to
get Bramlett to stop the
car again and again and
was in fear of his life in the
flight from the law.
Charged
(Continued from pg 1)
him.
Charged by Madis-
onville Police Sergeant
Chris Wilburn each with
assault were Steven E.
Rider, 50, of Toomey
Lane, Madisonville and
Christopher E. Rider, 18,
of Gudger Road, Madisonville.
Wilburn said the male
had argued with a female
of Trustees understands
how families across the
country have been struggling.
This action by the
Board will help to make
the dream of attending a
private college accessible
to every student regardless
of their financial situation.”
Beginning with the Fall
Semester of 2013, the tuition
and fee rate for students
at Hiwassee College
will be $13,320 per year regardless
of what state they
call home. The College
has also reduced their
room and board rate to
$6,320 dollars annually. A
residential student could
now attend Hiwassee College
for $19,640 per year
including tuition, fees,
room & board, a savings of
$24,000 over four years.
According to Businessweek,
the delinquency rate
on student loans stands at
an all-time high. By reducing
the cost of attendance,
Hiwassee College gives
more students the opportunity
to graduate with as
little student loan debt as
possible. Dr. Robin J. Tricoli,
President of Hiwassee
College, said,
“Student debt burden falls
heaviest on students from
middle-income families.
These families earn
slightly too much money
to qualify for financial aid
benefits but not enough to
afford the rising cost of a
quality college education.
For many middle-income
students, loans are the
only form of student aid
available. Lowering our
student’s debt burden is
part of the College’s mission
and strategic plan,
and we believe this is a
very responsible action for
us to take.”
“Hiwassee College is in
the business of developing
the whole student - mind,
body and spirit,” indicated
President Tricoli. “We
offer a personalized educational
experience with
low student-to-faculty ratios
on a safe, secure, and
beautiful 400 acre campus.
And now we offer all
this at a cost equal to or
lower than most other
public and private colleges
across the country.”
In an unexpected address
inside the Vatican’s
frescoed Clementine Hall
on Thursday, Pope Benedict
XVI promised unconditional
allegiance to his
successor, delivering a
poignant farewell speech to
his cardinals only hours before
he was scheduled to
step down from his eightyear
post and become the
first pontiff in 600 years to
resign. Benedict instructed
the “princes” of the church
to be unified in choosing
the 266th leader of the
world’s 2.1 billion
Catholics.
(The pope’s retirement
package? A monthly pension
of 2,500 euros, or
$3,300; living expenses covered
by the Vatican, including
a spacious home, cooks,
and housekeepers; and
continuing health-care coverage
by the Vatican’s generous
private health care
policy, according to The
Telegraph.)
Ex-NBA star Dennis
Rodman met with North
Korean leader Kim Jong
Un in Pyongyang on Thursday,
three days after the
former Chicago Bull’s arrival
in the country, telling
him that “you have a friend
for life,” according to a delegation
spokesman. Rodman
sat with Kim at an
exhibition basketball game,
chatting and watching
players from the North and
the U.S. play on mixed
teams.
It was another bad air
day in Beijing, China, on
Thursday as pollution from
automobile exhaust and
coal burning went to “Level
Six,” the highest level of
polluted air in the nation.
Residents in the capital city
donned facemasks to protect
themselves from the
smog and haze as they traveled
to work.
Meanwhile, China’s military
said on Thursday that
hackers from overseas hit
two of its websites approximately
144,000 times per
month in 2012, with twothirds
of the attacks originating
in the United States.
Around The Globe
The claim followed accusations
by an American cybersecurity
company that
Chinese military-backed
cyberspies infiltrated networks
and stole massive
amounts of data from U.S.
companies.
U.S. Secretary of State
John Kerry said in Rome
on Thursday the Syrian
Opposition Coalition was
the “legitimate voice of
the people” of the nation,
promising “direct nonlethal”
support from
Washington while warning
that longtime dictator,
President Bashar al-Assad,
was “out of time,” and
must be forced “out of
power.” Kerry said Washington
would not provide
arms, weapons, or soldiers,
but would contribute food
and medical supplies,
promising $60 million to
assist the coalition in governing
liberated parts of
Syria.
Reports out of
Venezuela said on Thursday
that President Hugo
Chavez was “clinging to
life” ten days after he returned
to his homeland
from Cuba, where he received
two months of
treatment for his most recent
bout with cancer.
The former paratrooper,
who has been in power
since 1999, disappeared
from public view in December
and had made repeated
trips to Cuba for
treatment since 2011.
And the mastermind
behind Britain’s “Great
Train Robbery” of 1963, a
heist that turned its perpetuators
into celebrities
and garnered an 11-member
gang around $40 million
in cash, died on
Thursday at age 81, only
months from the 50th anniversary
of the event.
Bruce Reynolds evaded
capture and fled to
Canada and Mexico with
his wife and son and remained
on the loose for
five years until he returned
to England and was sentenced
to 25 years in
prison, serving only ten
before his release in 1978.
