“Harkey” Yates was 65. 

“He was much of a 

man,” Sheriff Bill Bivens 

said on Tuesday, “good to 

everyone, good to be 

around, and good for the 

town. He would go out of 

his way to help you. A 

good asset for Tellico 

Plains, always giving his 

best for the community.” 

Yates was a family man 

and a friend to everyone

is a chief master sergeant.

Blankenship received the 

promotion on December 1, 

an elevation in status that

Theft Defendants Bolt From Sessions Court 

Lower Court Wraps Up Business for 2011

was Angela Kay 

Arden, who was charged 

several days ago with theft

$500. This defendant 

waived both accusations 

to the February grand jury. 

She also pleaded to a violation

sentenced to six months 

“to flatten” or pay $1,556

21 years. A business owner 

with his sister, he was a multi 

talented man well noted in 

music, was warm hearted 

with an out reached hand, an 

ear to listen to his friends and 

community. A 1964 graduate 

of Tellico Plains High School, 

attended Hiwassee College 

and Music Director of First 

Baptist Church for 30 years. 

He attended New Providence 

Missionary Baptist 

Church. 

He was the great-greatgreat 

grandson of Bucky 

Hunt, one of the first settlers 

of Tellico Plains and the 

founder and first pastor of 

New Providence Missionary 

Baptist Church. He is also 

preceded in death by his parents, 

Bob and Myrtle Yates; 

and grandparents, Earl and

a nolle on theft but 

waived a forgery count to 

criminal court.

waived methamphetamine 

promoting and a 

third offense revoked license 

to the grand jury 

while Christopher Keyt 

pleaded to two counts of 

theft and two counts of 

fraud and took an 11 

month, 29 day suspended 

sentence for the four violations.

Fortunato pleaded to theft 

and received an 11/29 suspended 

sentence; she 

pleaded to violation of 

probation on two charges, 

including theft, and took

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 

in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan, 

combine the shredded chicken 

meat with entire bottle of hot 

sauce, spreading to form an even 

layer. 

in a large saucepan over medium 

heat, combine the cream cheese 

with entire bottle of ranch dressing, 

stirring until smooth and 

hot. Pour evenly over the chicken 

mixture. Sprinkle celery over top. 

Bake uncovered for 20 minutes, 

then sprinkle cheese over top and 

bake uncovered for another 15 or 

20 minutes until just hot and 

bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes before 

serving with celery sticks or 

any sturdy dipping chip.

family,” Bivens said, “and 

when I was on the county 

commission and he was a 

city alderman, he talked 

about issues that affected 

both the county and the 

city and I found that we 

thought alike on most 

things and when people 

mentioned him, it was always 

positive. His kind of 

politics was the good kind, 

the kind that was best for 

the people. Harkey will be 

missed by a whole lot of 

us.” Yates was co-owner of 

Yates Home Store and coowner 

of Monroe Trucks. 

He was a town board 

member for 21 years. 

“He was going in as I 

was coming out,” said former 

Tellico Plains Mayor 

Charles Hall. “I remember 

the date he began, July 

14, 1990, because that was 

my last day as mayor.” 

Hall called Yates “ a 

good guy” and “an asset to 

the town.” 

“He was a clear 

thinker,” said Hall. “And 

he had no objection to 

telling you how he felt. 

Outspoken, but forthright, 

and I enjoyed him.”

Robert Hamilton called 

Yates “ a good friend” who 

would help anyone. 

“Our town has suffered 

a great loss,” Hamilton 

said. “Harkey had been on 

the board longer than anyone 

and he knew more 

about running the town

Home from 5-8 p.m. on 

Thursday (tomorrow) 

with the funeral services 

to follow in the chapel at

Number Ten: “Casey Anthony.” 

The accused murderer 

of her two-year-old 

daughter beat a homicide 

rap in July and walked out 

of a Florida jail after a jury 

found her not guilty of the 

allegation. Then, in a civil 

suit in November, the acquitted 

child killer invoked 

her constitutional 

right against self-incrimination 

60 times in a deposition 

in which a woman 

claimed her life was shattered 

after she became 

swept up watching the 

case on television, losing 

her job and her home. 

Number Nine: “The 

United State’s credit 

downgrade.” Yes, this one 

hurt. But who really felt 

it? You? Us? Maybe it just 

hurt our pride. Standard & 

Poor went nose-to-nose 

with Washington and 

stripped the feds, right 

down to their prized AAA 

credit rating. That’s right, 

it was a first, the only one 

since the U.S. received the 

triple-A designation in 

1941. Oh, and the squabbling 

that followed. Endless 

contentious 

congressional partisan 

sniping over finances and 

who deserved the blame. 

Nursery schoolers would 

have handled it better. 

The Buzz 

Number Eight: “The European 

Debt Crisis.” 

Someone said the Greek 

economy was lousy. It 

was. And it sparked riots, 

strikes, demonstrations, 

and don’t forget that good 

neighbor Italy booted (no 

pun) Premier Silvio 

Berlusconi from office because, 

he too, couldn’t 

manage the country’s wallet 

while chasing every 

skirt that came by. The 

crisis spread to Spain, Portugal, 

and even Ireland, 

and yes, there was squabbling 

in the EuroZone, 

just like on Capitol Hill. 

Number Seven: “Enough, 

the Arabs Said, or The 

Arab Spring.” Changes in 

the Arab world began in 

January (remember?) 

when Tunisian leader Zine 

al-Abidine Ban Ali fled for 

his life, and then came 

Egypt (Mubarak ousted) 

and Libya (Gadhafi gone). 

Yemen and Syria governments 

were challenged 

and look shaky going into 

2012. 

Number Six: “The Penn 

State Scandal.” King Joe 

(Paterno) dethroned, his 

statue toppled, his crown 

gone, and his legacy in 

ashes in the wake of accusations 

against his oncetrusted 

assistant coach 

Jerry Sandusky who was 

arrested as a serial child 

molester. Joe and the 

school rocked by a possible 

cover-up. And it appears 

it ain’t over yet. 

Number Five: “Twin Attacks 

in Norway.” A 

bomb blast at a government 

building in Oslo and 

a shooting massacre on 

nearby Utoya island that 

killed 76 persons. Gunman 

and bomber Anders 

Behring Breivik was later 

evaluated as insane.

of Gabrielle Giffords.” 

This happened early in 

January. A stunner. A lone 

gunman shot three-term

survived the near pointblank 

firing. 

Number Three: “Moammar 

Gadhafi is Dead, or 

The Libyan Civil War.” A 

brutal 42-year reign came 

to an end in the Libyan 

town of Sirte, where 

Libyan leader Moammar 

Gadhafi was captured 

cowering in a drainpipe, or 

a sewer pipe, or some kind 

of a culvert, after he fled 

Tripoli just ahead of opposition 

forces. His halfnaked 

body was carted 

down the streets where he 

used to receive adoration 

and acclaim. 

Number Two: “The Great 

Japanese Earthquake & 

Tsunami.” Carnage in 

March when a devastating 

earthquake – possibly the 

most powerful ever in the 

country - struck Japan and 

an ensuing 133-foot 

tsunami flooded three nuclear 

power plants and 

melted down seven reactor 

cores. Over 15,000 

dead, nearly 6,000 injured, 

and almost 3,500 

missing. Economic cost: 

$235 billion, the most expensive

northbound at 55 miles per 

hour on Highway 68 in a 

45-mile-per-hour zone 

near Monroe Street and 

watched it cross the centerline 

and fog line of the 

roadway several times. 

Stopping the car and 

speaking to Florey, Ward 

said she found him with 

bloodshot eyes, slurred 

speech, and alcohol on his 

breath. He told Ward he 

had consumed two beers 

and admitted to being 

“buzzed.” 

Florey performed sobriety 

testing poorly, Ward 

said. 

In his arrest warrant, 

Ward said Florey was convicted 

of DUI in November 

2007. 

Root 


Root in a parked car inside 

the park after hours. After 

informing Root the park 

was closed, Kizer said he 

watched Root drive away 

without fastening his seat 

belt. Root’s car was also 

swerving, Kizer said. 

Kizer performed a traffic 

stop in Highway 411 

and found Root nervous 

and sweating heavily and 

refusing to exit the vehicle. 

Root also refused to 

consent to a search of his 

car. 

A short time later, 

Monroe County Sheriff’s 

Lieutenant Detective 

Travis Jones and his K-9 

partner Nero arrived, 

Kizer said, and set about 

investigating the scene. 

Nero alerted on the 

driver’s door of the vehicle.

A 1983 Blue Devil graduate 

of Vonore High 

School, Blankenship enlisted 

in the Tennessee 

Army National Guard as a 

carpenter masonry specialist 

in 1985 and remained 

in the ranks until 

1994, completing his training 

at Missouri’s Fort 

Leonard Wood. 

It was then a tour of 

duty at Hiwassee College, 

Tennessee Technological 

University, and Lincoln 

Memorial University, 

where he received degrees 

in English, administration 

and supervision, and that 

of an educational specialist. 

In 1994, Blankenship 

joined the Tennessee Air 

National Guard and the 

next year went to Lackland 

Air Force Base’s serv- 

ices technical school. He 

became senior NCO for 

services flight in 2006. 

In the midst of all this, 

he also accepted the office 

of principal for Madisonville 

Intermediate 

School in 2001 and remained 

at the post for the 

next six years. In 2007, 

Blankenship was tapped 

for the school system’s 

central office and appointed 

assistant director. 

And even before the 

principal’s job, Blankenship 

took over in 1999 as 

the Guard’s 134th Services 

flight training manager, a 

position he stills maintains. 

Among his current activities 

in the schools and 

the Guard, Blankenship is 

active with the Monroe 

County Education Association 

and helps feed the 

homeless and the vets a 

free breakfast every year 

on Veteran’s Day.
