Seven persons in the
same family who had just
started to open their
Christmas gifts were
found shot to death in a
suburban Fort Worth
apartment on Sunday.
The shooter was believed
to be among the dead,
which included individuals
between the ages of 18 to
60 in an area near Dallas
dubbed the “Christmas
Capital of Texas.”
On Friday, Congress
approved a two-month renewal
of payroll tax cuts
for 160 million workers,
giving President Obama a
victory for his jobs agenda.
The lawmakers also approved
unemployment
benefits for two million
Americans.
Former House Speaker
Newt Gingrich and Texas
Governor Rick Perry
failed to qualify for the
March 6 Virginia primary,
NATIONWIDE
“We Love Them All
Big and Small”
the Republican Party of
Virginia said on Friday.
Both men fell short of the
required signatures of
10,000 registered voters,
though former Massachusetts
Governor Mitt
Romney and Texas Representative
Ron Paul met
the threshold and will be
on the ballot.
Meanwhile, billionaire
businessman Donald
Trump changed his voter
registration in New York
on Friday from Republican
to “unaffiliated,” preserving
his option of
running for president as
an independent.
On Sunday, former
2008 Iowa presidential
caucus winner Mike
Huckabee said if the
weather was “nice” in
Iowa on January 3, the
date for the 2012 state
caucus, look for Mitt
Romney to win the state’s
GOP presidential bid, but
if the weathered turned
“lousy,” Ron Paul would
take the victory. Facing an
“uphill” climb is Newt
Gingrich, Huckabee said,
due to a barrage of negative
ads in recent weeks.
A San Diego jury
awarded a man almost $7.5
million in a civil suit
against Starbucks on Friday
after the man fell inside
a North Carolina
coffee outlet in 2008. Anthony
The Justice Department
reversed its stance
on internet gambling on
Saturday and opened the
way for states to address
their budget deficits and
allow wagering, online
poker, and other forms of
betting that omit sports.
States were given the
power to sell lottery tickets
own borders.
And a Southern California
teenager became
the youngest person to
climb the seven tallest
mountains on Earth’s
seven continents, according
to his website on Sunday.
Fifteen-year-old
Jordan Romero, who was
accompanied by his father
and stepmother, said
that he reached to top of
Mount Vinson Massif in
Antarctica on Saturday,
beating the record held
by British climber George
Atkinson, who completed
his ascents at age 16 in
May. At 10, Romero
climbed Mount Kilimanjaro
in Africa and at age 13
Yates
(Continued from pg 1)
in town, Bivens said.
“I knew him and his
family,” Bivens said, “and
when I was on the county
commission and he was a
city alderman, he talked
about issues that affected
both the county and the
city and I found that we
thought alike on most
things and when people
mentioned him, it was always
positive. His kind of
politics was the good kind,
the kind that was best for
the people. Harkey will be
missed by a whole lot of
us.” Yates was co-owner of
Yates Home Store and coowner
of Monroe Trucks.
He was a town board
member for 21 years.
“He was going in as I
was coming out,” said former
Tellico Plains Mayor
Charles Hall. “I remember
the date he began, July
14, 1990, because that was
my last day as mayor.”
Hall called Yates “ a
good guy” and “an asset to
the town.”
“He was a clear
thinker,” said Hall. “And
he had no objection to
telling you how he felt.
Outspoken, but forthright,
and I enjoyed him.”
Fellow alderman
Robert Hamilton called
Yates “ a good friend” who
would help anyone.
“Our town has suffered
a great loss,” Hamilton
said. “Harkey had been on
the board longer than anyone
and he knew more
about running the town
than just about anyone
else. This is a terrible loss
for us.”
Police Chief Tonia
Norwood said she had as
well felt the passing of
Yates as a huge loss for the
town and the community.
“He will be missed,”
she said. “Harkey was
truly one of the pillars of
our community. There’s
no one like him. This is a
sad day.”
might be good at secondguessing
us, grab a pencil
and a sheet of paper before
turning to our Top
Ten list of stories that
proved to be the highlights
of this year. Write
down what you think are
the ten stories, from ten to
one, and see how close we
come to thinking alike.
Got your pen? Paper?
And your Thinking Cap?
Good! Now, here goes!
Number Ten: “Casey Anthony.”
The accused murderer
of her two-year-old
daughter beat a homicide
rap in July and walked out
of a Florida jail after a jury
found her not guilty of the
allegation. Then, in a civil
suit in November, the acquitted
child killer invoked
her constitutional
right against self-incrimination
60 times in a deposition
in which a woman
claimed her life was shattered
after she became
swept up watching the
case on television, losing
her job and her home.
Number Nine: “The
United State’s credit
downgrade.” Yes, this one
hurt. But who really felt
it? You? Us? Maybe it just
hurt our pride. Standard &
Poor went nose-to-nose
with Washington and
stripped the feds, right
down to their prized AAA
credit rating. That’s right,
it was a first, the only one
since the U.S. received the
triple-A designation in
1941. Oh, and the squabbling
that followed. Endless
contentious
congressional partisan
sniping over finances and
who deserved the blame.
Nursery schoolers would
have handled it better.
The Buzz
Number Eight: “The European
Debt Crisis.”
Someone said the Greek
economy was lousy. It
was. And it sparked riots,
strikes, demonstrations,
and don’t forget that good
neighbor Italy booted (no
pun) Premier Silvio
Berlusconi from office because,
he too, couldn’t
manage the country’s wallet
while chasing every
skirt that came by. The
crisis spread to Spain, Portugal,
and even Ireland,
and yes, there was squabbling
in the EuroZone,
just like on Capitol Hill.
Number Seven: “Enough,
the Arabs Said, or The
Arab Spring.” Changes in
the Arab world began in
January (remember?)
when Tunisian leader Zine
al-Abidine Ban Ali fled for
his life, and then came
Egypt (Mubarak ousted)
and Libya (Gadhafi gone).
Yemen and Syria governments
were challenged
and look shaky going into
2012.
Number Six: “The Penn
State Scandal.” King Joe
(Paterno) dethroned, his
statue toppled, his crown
gone, and his legacy in
ashes in the wake of accusations
against his oncetrusted
assistant coach
Jerry Sandusky who was
arrested as a serial child
molester. Joe and the
school rocked by a possible
cover-up. And it appears
it ain’t over yet.
Number Five: “Twin Attacks
in Norway.” A
bomb blast at a government
building in Oslo and
a shooting massacre on
nearby Utoya island that
killed 76 persons. Gunman
and bomber Anders
Behring Breivik was later
evaluated as insane.
Monroe County’s Only Locally
Owned and Operated
Daily Newspaper
Of General Circulation
Number Four: “Shooting
of Gabrielle Giffords.”
This happened early in
January. A stunner. A lone
gunman shot three-term
Arizona Representative
Gabrielle Giffords in the
head, critically wounding
her while killing six others
in the barrage. Giffords
survived the near pointblank
firing.
Number Three: “Moammar
Gadhafi is Dead, or
The Libyan Civil War.” A
brutal 42-year reign came
to an end in the Libyan
town of Sirte, where
Libyan leader Moammar
Gadhafi was captured
cowering in a drainpipe, or
a sewer pipe, or some kind
of a culvert, after he fled
Tripoli just ahead of opposition
forces. His halfnaked
body was carted
down the streets where he
used to receive adoration
and acclaim.
Number Two: “The Great
Japanese Earthquake &
Tsunami.” Carnage in
March when a devastating
earthquake – possibly the
most powerful ever in the
country - struck Japan and
an ensuing 133-foot
tsunami flooded three nuclear
power plants and
melted down seven reactor
cores. Over 15,000
dead, nearly 6,000 injured,
and almost 3,500
missing. Economic cost:
And Number One: “The
Slaying of 9/11 Mastermind
Osama bin Laden.” This
has to be the top story of
the year. U.S. Navy SEALs
took down the bearded
mass murderer inside his
Pakistan compound hideaway
in early May, executing
the world’s most
person behind the World
decade ago that left 2,753
individuals dead in lower
Manhattan. Accolades to
Beside the Big Flag
4435 Hwy 411 Madisonville
centerline of the roadway
was Dexter Allen Florey,
48, of Reed Springs Road.
Ward said she found
Florey’s Chevy traveling
northbound at 55 miles per
hour on Highway 68 in a
45-mile-per-hour zone
near Monroe Street and
watched it cross the centerline
and fog line of the
roadway several times.
Stopping the car and
speaking to Florey, Ward
said she found him with
bloodshot eyes, slurred
speech, and alcohol on his
breath. He told Ward he
had consumed two beers
and admitted to being
“buzzed.”
Florey performed sobriety
testing poorly, Ward
said.
In his arrest warrant,
Ward said Florey was convicted
of DUI in November
2007.
Root
(Continued from pg 1)
Root in a parked car inside
the park after hours. After
informing Root the park
was closed, Kizer said he
watched Root drive away
without fastening his seat
belt. Root’s car was also
swerving, Kizer said.
Kizer performed a traffic
stop in Highway 411
and found Root nervous
and sweating heavily and
refusing to exit the vehicle.
Root also refused to
consent to a search of his
car.
A short time later,
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Lieutenant Detective
Travis Jones and his K-9
partner Nero arrived,
Kizer said, and set about
investigating the scene.
Nero alerted on the
driver’s door of the vehicle.
A subsequent search
turned up packaged white
powder substances, Kizer
said.
Root refused implied
consent (blood alcohol
testing) and was then
transported to jail.
Blankenship
(Continued from pg 1)
lease as “a great honor.”
A 1983 Blue Devil graduate
of Vonore High
School, Blankenship enlisted
in the Tennessee
Army National Guard as a
carpenter masonry specialist
in 1985 and remained
in the ranks until
1994, completing his training
at Missouri’s Fort
Leonard Wood.
It was then a tour of
duty at Hiwassee College,
Tennessee Technological
University, and Lincoln
Memorial University,
where he received degrees
in English, administration
and supervision, and that
of an educational specialist.
In 1994, Blankenship
joined the Tennessee Air
National Guard and the
next year went to Lackland
Air Force Base’s serv-
ices technical school. He
became senior NCO for
services flight in 2006.
In the midst of all this,
he also accepted the office
of principal for Madisonville
Intermediate
School in 2001 and remained
at the post for the
next six years. In 2007,
Blankenship was tapped
for the school system’s
central office and appointed
assistant director.
And even before the
principal’s job, Blankenship
took over in 1999 as
the Guard’s 134th Services
flight training manager, a
position he stills maintains.
Among his current activities
in the schools and
the Guard, Blankenship is
active with the Monroe
County Education Association
and helps feed the
homeless and the vets a
free breakfast every year
on Veteran’s Day.
Terrorists struck government
intelligence and
security buildings in Damascus
on Friday, killing
over 40 persons and
wounding 150 more in
bomb attacks. The victims
of the explosions
were both military officials
and civilians and the
strikes marked the bloodiest
violence to hit Syria’s
capital in the nine-month
uprising against President
Bashar al-Assad.
A series of strong
earthquakes measuring
between 5- and 6-magnitude
rocked the New
Zealand city of
Christchurch on Friday,
shaking buildings and
sending terrified holiday
shoppers fleeing into the
streets. There were no reports
of damages in the
city, which was still recovering
from the devastating
quake that destroyed
much of the downtown
and killed 182 persons in
February.
North Korea named
Kim Jong Il’s son as the
nation’s “supreme leader”
of the 1.2-million strong
military on Saturday in
preparations to install 28year-old
Kim Jong Un as
the next leader of the
communist country. The
young man will become
the third-generation Kim
to rule the North’s 24 million
citizens.
Tens of thousands of
demonstrators rallied in
Moscow on Saturday in
another massive protest
against election fraud, displaying
increasing outrage
with Prime Minister
Vladimir Putin’s 12-year
rule. The demonstration
was the largest among
other cities in Russia and
was the largest show of
discontent since the 1991
Soviet collapse. Former
Soviet leader Mikhail
Gorbachev called on
Putin to resign, saying
three terms – two as president
and one as prime
minister – was “enough.”
In Yemen on Saturday,
elite troops loyal to outgo-
Around The Globe
ing President Ali Abdullah
Saleh opened fire with
guns, water cannons, and
tear gas on more than
100,000 protestors who
entered the country’s capital
of Sanaa, killing nine
persons, including a
woman. The protestors
had journeyed 170 miles
on foot for four days from
the city of Taiz, a move
aimed to put pressure on
the new government not
to grant Saleh immunity
from prosecution. Later
on Saturday, Saleh said he
would leave for the United
States but he did not say
when he would depart.
A wave of Christmas
day bombings swept
across Nigeria on Sunday,
killing dozens of persons
and including an attack on
a Catholic church in
Madalla that left 25 dead.
Islamist sect Boko Haram,
the “Nigerian Taliban,”
claimed responsibility,
which brought its death
count in Nigeria this year
to 491.
In the northern Afghan
city of Taloqan, a suicide
bomber killed at least 20
persons at a funeral on
Sunday, including a member
of the national parliament,
while wounding at
least 50 others in the once
peaceful Takhar province,
where a series of attacks
and assassinations have
taken place in recent
months, including the
killing of a top police commander
in May.
In Iraq, seven persons
died when a suicide
bomber hit the nation’s interior
ministry on Monday
in the latest attack between
the Shiite-led government
and Sunni
leaders.
And at any given time,
Earth has two moons, said
Jeremie Vauballion of the
Paris Observatory in
France on Friday. One is
the waxing and waning
Moon we all know and
love; the other is a tiny
ever changing asteroid –
no bigger than a car usually
– that enters Earth’s
orbit, circles the planet for
several months, and then
suddenly zips off into
space, only to be replaced
by another little “moon”
for a period of time.
