The Winds of November, the much-awaited second
collection of short stories by Jack Darnell is now available;
this one also includes his poetry.
He has published with a variation on his name as author,
H. Jack Darnell. This is in response to the friendship
he's formed with another published author by the
name of Jack Darnell. He simply wanted to keep confusion
out of the process, and the H. is for Howard, his
father, to whom the book is dedicated.
The Winds of November is available through Jack,
A Day of Memory
© 2011 H. Jack Darnell
I took a sunny summer day,
And pressed it to my heart to stay,
'Til memory's strings should sound
And hidden thoughts are found.
Some winter day that's dark and cold,
And all the world is looking old,
Then those memories hidden away
Will brighten up the darkest day.
I close my eyes and I can see
Daisies blooming just for me.
I hear the sound of buzzing bees,
Gathering nectar, flying free.
There's something in the air I smell,
So faintly I can hardly tell.
Is it the smell of a summer's day,
The day I saved and lay away?
Syrian government
forces fired live rounds
and tear gas on thousands
of persons marching in a
funeral procession that
turned into a protest
against Damascus on Saturday,
killing one individual
and wounding several
others in what a reporter
called “one of the largest
demonstrations in the
capital” since the uprising
against President Bashar
al-Assad began 11 months
ago. The protest, which
involved 15,000 to 30,000
Syrians, took place less
than a mile from al-Assad’s
palace.
Pope Benedict XVI inducted
22 men into the
Vatican’s exclusive club of
cardinals on Saturday, including
New York’s Archbishop
Timothy Dolan,
who has been named repeatedly
in the past as a
possible successor to the
pontiff. Benedict, 85, elevated
the group to the
Two Iranian warships
moved through the Suez
Canal and into the
Mediterranean Sea on Saturday,
the second-only
time the country’s navy
had made the passage
since the 1979 Islamic
Revolution. The action
followed last year’s February
22 action through the
canal and brought immediate
response from Israel,
which put its own navy on
alert in response.
Meanwhile, on Saturday,
Britain’s foreign minister
said an attack on Iran
would carry huge costs
and he preferred to allow
more time to permit
diplomacy and economic
pressure to run its course
with regard to the country’s
controversial nuclear
program. Tensions have
running high, said William
Hague, as Israel has accused
Iran of attacking its
diplomats in Thailand and
Georgia.
Meanwhile, back home
in Tehran, government officials
said an estimated
16,000 computers in the
country fell victim in 2010
Tellico Pride 253-3303
to the Stuxnet virus after
it targeted the Islamic Republic’s
nuclear facilities
and other industrial sites,
striking a limited number
of centrifuges. Iran said its
scientists discovered and
neutralized the malware
before it caused serious
damage.
Japanese Emperor Tsugunomiya
Akihito underwent
successful heart
bypass surgery at the University
of Tokyo on Saturday
and was recovering
despite poor health in recent
months and several
hospitalizations last year.
The 78-year-old ceremonial
but revered figure has
minimal involvements in
the day-to-day operations
of the country’s government.
Experts and attorneys
representing survivors of
the capsized Costa Concordia
cruise ship said on
Saturday that traces of cocaine
were found on a
sample of the ship’s captain’s
hair. The drug was
not found in his hair or in
his urine, which would
have indicated he used the
substance sometime close
to the moment when he
ran the huge vessel
aground near a Tuscan island
the night of January
13. And the elusive planet
that the famed scientist
Copernicus never saw will
give residents of the
Northern Hemisphere “a
February 20, 2012
very fine window of opportunity”
to see it, beginning
on Wednesday,
according to NBC News
on Saturday. Hard to see,
and harder still to find,
since its orbit is closer to
the Sun than to Earth,
Mercury will line up beside
Venus and Jupiter and
will shine almost as bright
as Sirius, the brightest star
in the sky. Look west at
twilight, the rest is easy.
According to the
White House on Friday,
the United States’ economy
is “on the road to recovery,”
with stronger job
growth expected this year,
even though income inequality
and Europe’s debt
crisis could pose challenges,
President Obama
said. The administration
released its 446-page Economic
Report of the President,
which outlines a
plan to “recover, rebalance,
and rebuild.”
A day earlier, on Thursday,
the U.S. Postal Service
released its five-year plan
to Congress, a move said
to be a push for legislation
to assist the service
through its ongoing financial
woes and a $3.3-billion
loss in the final three
months of 2011. The plan
suggests cutting home delivery
from six days a week
to five, close thousands of
post offices across the nation,
and raise the price of
a postage stamp to 50
cents.
On Friday, after weeks
of laborious negotiations,
Congress passed a $143
billion package to extend
a payroll tax cut and unemployment
insurance
through the end of 2012, a
move that would provide
each average American
household an extra $1,000
and five million persons
with continued unemployment
benefits. Left
out of the package were
suggested mandatory drug
testing and GED programs
for the unemployed.
The Republican Party
said on Saturday that
Obama’s 2013 budget,
which proposes $4 trillion
NATiONWiDE
in deficit reduction over
the coming decade while
investing billions more in
programs to spur economic
development, was a
“road map to Greece.”
Representative Cathy Mc-
Morris Rodgers said
Obama’s stimulus package
three years ago promised
to drop unemployment
below eight percent,
adding that it then peaked
at ten percent and now is
at 8.3 percent.
Crude oil prices rose
for a third straight day on
Friday, topping $103 per
barrel while remaining on
track for a second consecutive
week of gains, according
to oil analysts,
who added that drivers are
Workshop Feb. 27-29 in
Chattanooga which is
open to National Guard
members, Reservists, and
all veterans. It is also for
military spouses, and is
completely free to participants.
The event is set for
Monday through Wednesday
at the Army Reserve
Center, 6503 Bonny Oaks
Drive in Chattanooga.
Seats are limited so those
interested are strongly
urged to pre-register. Email
at 615-313-0752.
The first two-and-ahalf
days will be all workshop,
followed by a Job
Fair Wednesday, February
29, starting at 1 p.m.
This will mark the 20th
such Workshop and Job
Fair held across Tennessee.
Officials are enthusiastic
about what they’ve been
able to do for Guard
members, reservists, veterans
and spouses over the
past 15 months.
“It’s a terrific opportunity
for military who have
returned from deployment
as well as for all veterans,”
said Marvin Wells,
National Guard Bureau
Employer Support Specialist.
“They will finish
with a resume in hand and
get the chance to speak
with numerous employers
on the concluding day of
the workshop.
The program focuses
on analyzing skills veterans
have attained through
the military, strengths and
weaknesses, effective job
search strategies, writing
resumes/cover letters, and
mock interviews; also approaching
the job- search
process, researching companies,
analyzing want ads
and completing application
forms.
It is not limited to persons
unemployed but to
those who might also feel
underemployed.
“Employers like to hire
veterans because they
bring a work ethic that
most others don’t possess,”
explained John
Alexander, Veterans Employment
Representative
with the State Dept. of
Labor and Workforce Development.
“They show
up on time, they understand
what’s expected of
them, and they don’t wait
around to be told every
single thing. Just their
entry-level military training
still puts them ahead
of almost everyone else.”
Lady Wildcats Take on Polk
County in First Round of Districts
Ferocious Comeback Comes Up Short in Fourth
Tulli Cole
The era of tournaments
and rivalry match-ups, the
beginning of high school’s
own version of March
Madness, has finally arrived.
The first round of
the District 5-AA Tournament
played out on the
basketball-coliseum of
McMinn County on
Thursday night, February
17. Monroe County’s very
own Lady Wildcats of
Sweetwater faced off
against their longtime opponents,
the Wildkittens
of Polk County, hoping to
take a win and move on in
the tournament. A slow
start allowed their opponents
to take a weighty
lead, but the Lady Wildcats
refused to given in.
They rallied, fighting
tooth and claw back into
the game, matching their
challengers point for
point. In the end, however,
the comeback fell
just short, and the Lady
Wildcats lost a true nailbiter.
The Wildkittens
caught the ball at tip-off,
but their opening shot did
not draw net. R. Thomasson
snagged the defensive
rebound on the other end
of the floor, preventing
any further attempts and
allowing the Lady Wildcats
their own shot at the
old iron. Though the first
stab did not fall, C.
Grayson caught the offensive
rebound and then
caught R. Jefford, who
drove to the basket for the
pair of points.
But those points were
the last the Lady Wildcats
found for some time. Polk
County enjoyed an 8-0
run to pull ahead with the
lead, and even put away a
last second foul shot to
end the first.
The Lady Wildcats
only managed one more
bucket in the first, courtesy
of a steal by Jefford
that turned into the basket
in question.
The score at the end of
the first quarter was 4-12.
The Wildkittens
opened the second quarter
with possession of the basketball,
but tough defense
by N. Burgess and Jefford
forced a turnover. Unfor-
tunately, Sweetwater was
unable to convert on the
offensive end, and it was
Polk County who nabbed
the first points of the
quarter—a pair of foul
shots. The Wildkittens
soon scored yet again,
thanks to a second-chance
opportunity.
But B. Mashburn was
quick to respond to the
three points with a triple
of her own. She put away
a three-pointer. She lathered,
rinsed, and repeated
not long afterward,
matching a Wildkitten’s
bucket with one of her
own.
With Mashburn’s
points came a surge on the
part of the Lady Wildcats
team as a whole. Though
foul trouble gave the
Wildkittens several trips
to the line, Sweetwater
met Polk County point for
point. A. Bowden’s hustle
paved the way to a pair of
free-throws during two
trips to the line, as well as
a banked-in three and a
two-point bucket. Jefford
also nailed a three, and S.
Ervin put away two free
throws after being fouled
on a put-back attempt.
Jefford’s had the final
points of the quarters, her
free-throws drawing
Sweetwater to within 7.
The score at halftime
was 23-30.
with possession of the basketball,
but they hit another
cold spell. For nearly
4 minutes, they struggled
offensively, while Polk
County ran away in a 6-0
run.
Bowden ended the
run—and her team’s cold
spell—with a basket, and
it was a herald of things to
come. The Lady Wildcats
were incredibly aggressive
and efficient in the final
minutes of the third,
outscoring their district rivals
11 points to 2. The
points—courtesy of Bowden,
Ervin, and Jefford—
cut the lead to single digits
yet again, with Sweetwater
even closer than before.
The Lady Wildcats’ defense
even prevented a last
drive by Polk County.
The score at the end of
the third quarter was 34-
38.
The Wildkittens won
the first 5 points of the
fourth quarter, but the
Lady Wildcats once again
rallied. N. Burgess put
away a bucket to open the
comeback, and she was
soon followed by a teamup
play by Mashburn and
Ervin. A. Myers caught
Bowden, who drove to the
basket for a duo of points,
and Ervin nabbed net to
put the Lady Wildcats to
within 3.
A Sweetwater turnover
led to two free throws by
the Wildkittens, but Jefford
quickly matched
those with a steal and a
basket. Much the same
happened later in the
quarter, when Bowden
matched two Polk County
free throws with a pair of
her own. With a little over
a minute to play, the Lady
Wildcats’ hustle had ensured
a one-possession
game: (46-49).
But foul trouble for
Sweetwater returned, and
those trips to the line gave
Polk County the advantage
it needed. Although
Ervin and N. Burgess
combined for 4 points
(Burgess’ even being the
final play of the night), the
Wildkittens scored 8
points on foul shot attempts,
allowing them to
stay just out of Sweetwater’s
reach.
The final score was 50-
57.
Scoring for the Lady
Wildcats were: A. Bowden
(17), R. Jefford (14), S.
Ervin (10), B. Mashburn
(5), N. Burgess (4).
Chiefs Take First Round in District Tournament
Allen Roberts
The Sequoyah Chiefs
came into the District
5AA tournament as the
number one seed and they
showed why they were top
guns, taking care of the
fourth-seeded Meigs
County Tigers to advance
to the upcoming championship
game. Meigs
jumped out early, but Sequoyah
found its game
and pulled away in the second
half, taking the victory
82-65.
The first period saw the
Tigers come out of the
gates red hot, building an
early lead, but the Chiefs
responded toward the end
of the frame, Taylor
Hawkins drilled a threepointer
and had a lay-up
for five points, Trey Dyer
made two buckets and a
free throw giving him five
points. Lucas Watson
nailed a three-pointer, Andrew
Millsaps had a basket
for two points, and
Jacob Coon tossed in a
free throw, and at the end
of the first quarter, the
Chiefs led 16-14.
The Chiefs continued
to build on that lead in the
second period, outscoring
the Tigers 19-1. Watson
had three baskets and a
free throw for seven
points, Hawkins drilled
two treys for six points,
Tevin West had a basket
and a free throw for three
points, Coon scored two
The third period saw
Sequoyah’s offense take
over as the Chiefs
outscored Meigs 28-19.
West nailed a threepointer,
two lay-ups, and
two free throws, giving
him nine points. Watson
had three baskets and
three free throws for nine
points. Millsaps hit a trey
and a lay-up for five
points, Hawkins tossed in
three free throws, and
Coon made two free
throws, and at the end of
three, the Chiefs had extended
their lead to 63-46.
The Tigers tried to rally
in the fourth period, scoring
19 points, but the
Chiefs matched that effort,
posting 19 points
together of rivals, and such
was the case Thursday
night at McMinn County
High School. The Wildcats
of Sweetwater took
on another breed of jungle
cat: a squad of Meigs
County Tigers. But despite
a fierce, high-energy
first half, poor rebounding,
a stumbling third quarter,
and turnovers ultimately
doomed the Wildcats’
chances, and they fell to
the Tigers.
The duo of squads exchanged
blows on and off
and on equal footing during
the first quarter. The
Tigers were the first to
snag a bucket, off a second-chance
opportunity,
but the Wildcats were not
far behind: Brandon Clark
hustled to return a rebound
for a bucket, and
Jhamarus Brewster nailed
a swishing three-pointer.
A lack of rebounding
on Sweetwater’s part allowed
Meigs County to
nab their next 4 points,
but the Wildcats improved
on that end of the
game as the quarter continued.
SWEETWATER
LOCATED ACROSS FROM KMART
Massengil, Clark, and
Brewster outgunned the
Tigers, granting the Wildcats
a tenuous lead at the
end of one quarter of play.
The score was 16-14.
Sweetwater opened the
second quarter with possession,
and their first
drive resulted in a basket
by Curtis Badiu. The
Tigers briefly took back
the lead, following two
buckets and a foul shot,
but Brewster helped the
Wildcats pull ahead once
again with a duo of points
of his own.
As the quarter ticked
away, the Wildcats managed
to hold on to their
lead despite another small
lead change. Alex Miller
put away a pair of free
throws, and soon afterward
made a steal that
transformed into another
basket. Clark and Brewster
also snagged a combined
4 points.
However, Sweetwater
gave the Tigers several second-chances
on the offensive
end, allowing Meigs
County to hang around,
and perhaps too close to
comfort.
The score at halftime
was 28-26.
The Tigers ripped and
roared in the third,
outscoring the Wildcats 19
to 8.
On their opening drive
of the quarter, a Tiger not
only made a three-pointer,
he was also fouled. His
successful trip to the line
gave Meigs County the
lead once more, and they
would score 4 more points
(one bucket off a Sweetwater
turnover) before
Sweetwater could respond,
when Massengil returned
a rebound for a
bucket.
Massengil caught another
rebound soon afterward.
He was fouled in the
put-back, and was able to
sink a free throw while at
the line. The Tigers were
quick to respond to the
points, however; they won
two unanswered baskets—a
two-point bucket,
and a three-pointer off another
Sweetwater
turnover. Brewster and
Clark together managed
to match the 5-0 run with
individual drives, but the
Tigers fought for another
Page 15 - The BUZZ
6 points to retain their
lead.
The score at the end of
the third quarter was 36-
45. The Wildcats were the
first to draw metaphorical
blood in the final quarter,
thanks to a basket by
Brewster, but the Tigers
were able to hold on to
their lead with 4 more
points.
The Wildcats struggled
offensively throughout the
fourth quarter, and had little
to no second-chances
at the net during their
possessions. Compounding
their troubles were
their rebounding woes and
a couple of costly
turnovers.
In the end, even points
by Massengil and Badiu
(which cut the Tiger lead
to 8, at one point), as well
as steal a piece for Massengil
and Miller, were not
enough to help stem the
tide, and the Tigers walked
away with the victory.
The final score was 48-
62.
Scoring for the Wildcats
were: Jhamarus Brewster
(18), Thomas
Massengil (13), Brandon
Clark (7), Curtis Badiu (6),
and Alex Miller (4).
roe County Sheriff’s detective’s
division with the
Class B felony violation of
initiating the process to
manufacture methamphetamine
was Jeffery
Wayne Miller, 40, of Reed
Springs Road.
The detective division
reported a dispatch to an
active meth lab at Miller’s
home, where Sheriff’s Sergeant
James Wall had arrived
earlier and flushed a
male into nearby woods
who was identified as
Mark West.
Wall said he had
knocked on the door of an
outbuilding on Miller’s
was answered by a female
identified as Brandi
Sanchez, who was apparently
inside the outbuilding.
Wall told the detective
division that he could see
through the opened door
what appeared to be a
plastic bottle containing a
chemical mix used in the
manufacture of meth, and
the smell, or fumes, coming
off the apparatus was
so strong and vehement
that one deputy got sick.
The detectives vouched
for the odor, saying it was
“strong.” The detectives,
too, witnessed the bottle
and its noxious chemical
mixture.
