Chiefs Fall to Smith
County in Sectionals
Allen roberts
The Sequoyah Chiefs
baseball team ventured
where no other Sequoyah
team had been before,
making it to the sectionals,
or "sub state," for the
first time in school history.
The Chiefs were on the
road, traveling to Smith
County to take on the
Owls. Smith County
jumped out to a big 8-0
early lead only to see the
Chiefs come roaring back
in the late innings, but the
rally would fall just little
short as the Owls held on
in the last inning to take
the win and eliminate Sequoyah
from the playoffs
with the final score of 8-6.
Even though the Chiefs’
season is over, the team
has a lot to be proud of, as
it proved to be one of the
better squads in the state,
winning its second straight
district title and advancing
and on to the sectionals.
The Chiefs finish with
a record of 27 wins and 7
losses and with key players
returning next year, Sequoyah
will once again be
a team to reckon in the
season to come.
Things looked rough
early for Sequoyah as it
just could not find any offense
and did not score a
run in the first three innings
of play. Smith
County, on the other
hand, jumped out to a big
lead as it took advantage
of several errors and mistakes
from the Chiefs defense.
The Owls scored
two runs in the first inning,
five runs in the second,
and one run in the
third as they built a big 8-
0 lead after three innings
of play.
comeback bid in the
fourth inning as Jake Johnson
doubled and Scott
Bowers singled, putting
runners on first and third,
Trey Strickland came in to
run for Bowers and he
quickly stole second.
Blake Huffman hit a
grounder that got by the
Owls second baseman,
scoring Johnson and
Strickland. The next batter
struck out, and at the
end of four innings Smith
County led 8-2 and that
score held through the
fifth inning as neither
team scored.
The Chiefs offense really
came to life in the top
of the sixth inning, Johnson
got things going as he
went to first base on a single.
The next batter flew
out to right field, bringing
Forrest McKane to the
plate, and he doubled into
center field, putting runners
on second and third.
Blake Huffman singled
into right field, scoring
Johnson and McKane and
Huffman advanced to second
on a throw to the
plate and then went to
third on a passed ball. The
next hitter went down
swinging for the second
out. Dustin Moser
reached first on a base on
balls and a balk on the
Owls pitcher scored Huffman
from third and
moved Moser to second.
Caleb Minor,singled, scoring
Moser, but Minor got
picked off first on the play
and ended the threat. Sequoyah
held Smith
County scoreless in the
bottom of the inning, and
after six innings of play, the
Chiefs had cut the lead to
8-6.
It looked as if Sequoyah
was going to tie things
back up in the top of the
seventh for with one out
Trey Dyer went to first
base on a error. Johnson
stepped to the plate and
ripped a double off the
outfield wall, which was
his fourth hit of the game,
putting the tying runners
on second and third with
one out, but back to back
strikeouts ended the
threat and the game and
Smith County held on for
the win with the final
score of 8-6.
Congratulations to the
Chiefs on a great season as
it continues to build a tradition
“Coot” Raper, 55, of Reagan
Charged by detectives
each with promotion of
the manufacture of meth
were the females, Shannon
Elisha Miller, 33, of Gamble
Gap Road, Tellico
Plains and Stephanie June
Wise, 32, of Red River
The detective division
said the traffic stop resulted
in a search of the
and lighter fluid, lye, and
lithium batteries, other
components used in the
making of meth.
Asked to empty their
pockets, Raper, Miller, and
Wise complied, and from
Raper’s pocket there came
xanax pills, a plastic baggie
of meth, and a set of digital
scales, the detectives
said.
