The two women at the
center of the General
David Patraeus scandal
have both been repeat visitors
to the White House
during the past four years,
a White House official told
NBC News on Friday, and
since September of this
year Jill Kelley was a guest
three times and Paula
Broadwell arrived twice,
once in 2009 and again in
2011. Kelly triggered the
investigation that revealed
Patraeus’ extramarital affair
with Broadwell by complaining
to an FBI agent
about a series of harassing
emails she received, which
the agent found were from
Broadwell ,and then agents
discovered the affair.
Meanwhile, Patraeus,
the former CIA director,
testified before House and
Senate intelligence committees
on Friday, stoking
the controversy over the
Obama administration’s
handling of the Benghazi,
Libya, attack on the U.S.
consulate while affirming
that references to “al-Qaida
involvement” were omitted
from his agency’s report of
Marty Harrill’s
the incident. Other officials,
including National
Intelligence Director James
Clapper and acting CIA
Director Mike Morell, who
also testified, said they did
not know who changed the
talking points.
Medical giant Stryker
on Friday became the latest
company to announce job
cuts in the looming shadow
of additional costs associated
with the new Obamacare
law, affirming the
elimination of 1,170 jobs, or
five percent of its workforce.
The law’s “medical
device excise tax” would
impose a 2.3 percent levy
that was scheduled to be
estimated and a cost to the
medical device industry of
$20 billion.
Yale University reported
on Friday that babies exposed
to mother’s cigarette
smoke while still in the
womb would grow up and
perform more poorly on
reading comprehension
tests, struggling on tests to
determine how accurately a
child reads aloud while understanding
what he, or she
is reading. Researcher Dr.
The University of Tennessee
fired head football
coach Derek Dooley on
Sunday, following a 41-18
conference rout by Vanderbilt
in Nashville Saturday
night. The loss rendered
the Volunteers ineligible for
a post-season bowl game
bid and gave the team its
third straight losing season.
The university said Dooley
would not be on the sidelines
against Kentucky this
coming Saturday, but rather
offensive coordinator Jim
Chaney would coach the
final game of the season
against the Wildcats, a
“must-win” contest in order
for the team not to go winless
in SEC play this year.
In high school sports, a
gridiron star at Yulee High
School in Florida broke a
longstanding national
record for amateur rushing
on Friday, slashing and
scampering and cutting for
a four-year football total of
11,232 yards, considered an
“breakable” mark after it
was set from 1950-53 at
Sugarland, Texas, by Ken
Hall. Derrick Henry, a 6’3”
County Sheriff’s Interdiction
Sergeant James BJ
Johnson with possession
of marijuana for resale was
Jeremiah Ulysses
Mangum, 35, of Talbot,
Tennessee.
Johnson said he was on
patrol along Interstate 75
shortly before 1 p.m. when
he spotted a Chevy Impala
impeding traffic in the left
lane of the thoroughfare.
Big trucks were passing
the car on its right and behind
it there was a long
line of traffic.
Stopping the car, Johnson
said he found
Mangum behind the
wheel and an odor of marijuana
wafting from the
car door window and hitting
him in the face.
Mangum denied the presence
of marijuana but gave
Johnson consent to search
his vehicle.
Under the passenger’s
seat, Johnson located a
brown sack containing
two plastic bags of marijuana.
capital.
Syrian rebels captured
an airport near the Iraqi
border on Saturday, taking
the facility from the government’s
military, which
had been using it in the
shadow of the town of
Albu Kamal. President
Bashar al-Assad’s forces
struck back and bombed
the airstrip with fighter
jets.
Laying bare its true allegiance
and apparently
shunning the United
States because of the
West’s alliance with Israel,
the Iraqi government on
Friday backed one of its
top diplomats after he
urged Arab states to use
“the weapon of oil” against
Washington, despite the
American support that
freed the nation from a
ruthless dictator. Qais al-
Azzawy said the “economic
weapon” would be
the strongest “to put into
effect.”
The United Nations
nuclear agency said on Friday
that Iran was poised to
double its output of
highly-enriched uranium
at its fortified underground
facility, a development
that placed Tehran
within just months of creating
the core of a nuclear
warhead. The International
Atomic Energy
Agency said Iran could
have enough of the material
to make a weapon in
just over three months.
Expedia released its
2012 Vacation Deprivation
Survey on Friday, just in
time for the end of the
year, reporting that Americans
only use (on average)
ten of their possible 12 to
14 days of vacation time
each year. In the U.K.,
where workers get 25 days,
most take all of their
comp time; Spanish and
French use their full 30
days; and Germans take
their 28 to 30 days. But it’s
Japan that scored the lowest,
where workers take
only five of the 13 days offered
every year.
And with the end of
Twinkies, Ding Dongs,
and Ho Hos, Time magazine
on Friday listed the
top ten iconic junk foods
that are and have been
mainstays on supermarket
shelves and in our bellies
for decades, made all the
more better because of
the possibility that not
one has any nutritional
value whatsoever. In no
particular order are the
ten: the Twinkie, cheese
puffs, doughnuts, pork
rinds, pepperoni pizza, the
“chipwich” (ice cream between
two chocolate chip
cookies), McDonalds fries,
the Snickers bar, Doritos,
and the Moon Pie. Now,
where are those beer nuts?
Officers Remain Busy with
Theft and Break-In Calls
Deputies and police officers
remained busy in recent
days as reports of
burglaries and thefts
showed no signs of letting
up. Listings of incidents
continued as November
set sail to the holidays and
beyond.
In one incident, Monroe
County Sheriff’s
Deputy Michael Cansler
on Thursday investigated a
reported Highway 411
theft in which a 2002 Ply-
According to his series
Sweetwater Police Patrol
Officer Nick Farrell
checked out a report of
theft of electricity on
Wednesday, arriving at a
Powell Avenue home
where he met with a
Sweetwater Utility Board
employee who said power
had earlier been shut off
for nonpayment of usage.
The employee showed
Farrell evidence of meter
box tampering, and a
check of the usage determined
a total of $1,035 had
been accessed from early
September through November.
Sheriff’s Deputy James
break-in at a Niles Ferry
day, September 12, listing
as taken a $5,000 television,
of jewelry, and prescription
A Tuesday, September
Fatality
(Continued from pg 1)
was identified as John
Wood Jr of Cane Creek
Road, Tellico Plains.
Wood was killed when
his 2005 Hummer H2 vehicle
left Rafter Road as it
traveled toward Tellico
Plains before noon.
Injured was Wood’s
wife, Sandra, 60, who was
a passenger inside the vehicle.
Millsaps said the Hummer
dropped off the right
side of the roadway and
when Wood attempted to
return the vehicle to the
pavement he overcorrected,
causing it to topple
from the road’s left, or driver’s,
side. It then struck a
guide wire to a power pole
and overturned, coming to
rest on its top.
Wood was believed to
be dead at the scene by
medical personnel, but
Sandra Wood was transported
to Woods Memorial
Hospital in Etowah,
where it was determined
her injuries were not life
threatening.
Millsaps said Wood was
not restrained during the
accident and a seat belt
could have made a difference
in the outcome, as
Wood was partially and
slightly ejected through
the vehicle’s sunroof.
The Monroe County
Rescue Squad removed
Wood’s body and transported
it to Sweetwater
Hospital for its official determination.
