Stopping the car, Johnson 

said he found

wheel and an odor of marijuana 

wafting from the 

car door window and hitting 

him in the face. 

Mangum denied the presence 

of marijuana but gave 

Johnson consent to search 

his vehicle. 

Under the passenger’s 

seat, Johnson located a 

brown sack containing 

two plastic bags of marijuana. 

The weight came to a 

pound-and-a-half, and

Fatality 


was identified as John 

Wood Jr of Cane Creek 

Road, Tellico Plains. 

Wood was killed when 

his 2005 Hummer H2 vehicle 

left Rafter Road as it 

traveled toward Tellico 

Plains before noon. 

Injured was Wood’s 

wife, Sandra, 60, who was 

a passenger inside the vehicle. 

Millsaps said the Hummer 

dropped off the right 

side of the roadway and 

when Wood attempted to 

return the vehicle to the 

pavement he overcorrected, 

causing it to topple 

from the road’s left, or driver’s, 

side. It then struck a 

guide wire to a power pole 

and overturned, coming to 

rest on its top. 

Wood was believed to 

be dead at the scene by 

medical personnel, but 

Sandra Wood was transported 

to Woods Memorial 

Hospital in Etowah, 

where it was determined 

her injuries were not life 

threatening. 

Millsaps said Wood was 

not restrained during the 

accident and a seat belt 

could have made a difference 

in the outcome, as 

Wood was partially and 

slightly ejected through 

the vehicle’s sunroof. 

The Monroe County 

Rescue Squad removed 

Wood’s body and transported 

it to Sweetwater 

Hospital for its official determination.
