Hundreds of individuals from dozens of local churches gathered 

at Sequoyah High School in early afternoon on Sunday, 

joining hands and bowing heads while encircling 

the school in one long unbroken chain. 

It was a "Call to Prayers" held in a 

brief and solemn 

ceremony around the entire building.

It was October 17, 2006, five years 

ago today, and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant 

Ryan E. Haupt was finishing his tour. 

Scheduled to be on his way home in 

three days, he was escorting his unit’s 

equipment along a road that he and the 

others had traveled hundreds of times. 

But this time it was different. This 

time an IED - “improvised explosive 

device” - detonated as Ryan’s humvee 

passed.

He was a loving son, brother

Ryan 


Vonore Elementary School Ryan Haupt and two 

others soldiers in his unit 

were killed. A fourth was 

critically wounded. 

Ryan was the squad 

leader of two elite sniper 

teams out of the Fourth 

Infantry at Fort Carson, 

Colorado. He was an expert 

marksman, described 

as one of the best. His 

teams had been responsible 

for making a number 

of roads in the Baqubah 

region much safer. Ryan 

was respected by his men 

who followed him, believed 

in him. And Ryan 

believed that he was going 

home. 

He was two weeks from 

home when he died, it was 

his final mission, accompanying 

the squad’s equipment. 

Each year his mother, 

Lynn Forehand, with family 

and friends, take a ride 

through the county to 

honor the memory of 

their beloved son, brother, 

and friend. Others join in 

the ride to express their 

appreciation of the service 

and the sacrifice of an 

American Hero. 

Saturday, a group gathered 

at the Monroe 

County courthouse and 

once again traveled 

through the county to celebrate 

the life of SSG 

Ryan E. Haupt, and very 

fittingly ended their ride at 

the Veteran’s Memorial in 

Madisonville. 

Ryan was killed five 

years ago today. Please 

take a moment to send a 

prayer up for his family 

and as you see a flag this 

week pause and remember 

that Ryan Haupt gave his 

life for the freedom it signifies.
