IN MEMORY OF
SSG RYAN E. HAUPT
It was October 17, 2006, five years
ago today, and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant
Ryan E. Haupt was finishing his tour.
Scheduled to be on his way home in
three days, he was escorting his unit’s
equipment along a road that he and the
others had traveled hundreds of times.
But this time it was different. This
time an IED - “improvised explosive
device” - detonated as Ryan’s humvee
passed.
Turtle Tents are popping
up all over the county
from now until race day,
October 22. Look for the
mascot, Tucker the Turtle,
and for the 15-foot turtle
balloon to know where
else you can purchase
adoptions. Take home
your own souvenir turtle
by purchasing one for $5 at
any Turtle Tent. Adoptions
may also be purchased
at all six Boys &
Girls Club sites, and online
at www.monroecountyturtlerace.com.
All proceeds from the
Turtle Tumble go directly
to benefit the more than
2,000 children and youth
served annually by the
Boys & Girls Club of the
Monroe Area. “Without
the generosity of all of our
supporters, including
sponsors, donors, volunteers
and every person
purchasing a turtle adoption,
we would not be able
to do the things we do
every day with the children
in this county,” said
Phillips. “Our six club
sites ensure that the young
people who need us most
are provided a safe place,
caring and professional
staff, unique opportunities
and most of all, fun, on a
daily basis.”
Ryan
(Continued from pg 1)
Vonore Elementary School Ryan Haupt and two
others soldiers in his unit
were killed. A fourth was
critically wounded.
Ryan was the squad
leader of two elite sniper
teams out of the Fourth
Infantry at Fort Carson,
Colorado. He was an expert
marksman, described
as one of the best. His
teams had been responsible
for making a number
of roads in the Baqubah
region much safer. Ryan
was respected by his men
who followed him, believed
in him. And Ryan
believed that he was going
home.
He was two weeks from
home when he died, it was
his final mission, accompanying
the squad’s equipment.
Each year his mother,
Lynn Forehand, with family
and friends, take a ride
through the county to
honor the memory of
their beloved son, brother,
and friend. Others join in
the ride to express their
appreciation of the service
and the sacrifice of an
American Hero.
Saturday, a group gathered
at the Monroe
County courthouse and
once again traveled
through the county to celebrate
the life of SSG
Ryan E. Haupt, and very
fittingly ended their ride at
the Veteran’s Memorial in
Madisonville.
Ryan was killed five
years ago today. Please
take a moment to send a
prayer up for his family
and as you see a flag this
week pause and remember
that Ryan Haupt gave his
life for the freedom it signifies.
Hundreds of hooded
and masked protestors
rampaged through Rome
on Saturday, torching cars
and breaking windows in
some of the worst violence
in the Italian capital in
years. A larger more
peaceful demonstration in
the city that numbered in
the tens of thousands
joined the worldwide “day
of rage” against bankers
and politicians.
In London on Sunday,
protestors set up camp
outside St. Paul’s Cathedral
and promised to remain
there indefinitely to
show their anger over the
global economic crisis.
The group of about 250
who said the Occupy Wall
Street movement inspired
it moved to the church
after being thwarted by
police at the London
Stock Exchange.
Monetary Fund to assume
a larger role in addressing
the eurozone’s escalating
debt troubles. The Group
appeared to be primarily
concerned with the
woes of the economies of
Italy and Spain.
The Associated Press
said on Saturday that
Washington had abandoned
its plans to keep
U.S. troops in Iraq past a
year-end withdrawal deadline
and would fully pull its
service members from the
country by January. The
move would end over
eight years American involvement
in the Iraq war.
However, the Pentagon
forcefully denied the AP
report, saying the U.S. was
committed to keeping its
agreement with the Iraqi
government.
According to Norwegian
researchers on Saturday,
men who never get
married are much more
likely to die of cancer.
Why? The authors of the
study said apparently
wives remind husbands to
take better care of themselves
and send them to
the doctor if something
goes wrong. Not to mention
the additional emotional
and economic
support from being married
that might lead to a
healthier lifestyle.
And in addition to
shipping to the United
States copious amounts of
televisions, cars, sugar, and
medical equipment, Mexico’s
government said on
Saturday it would as well
be sending water north of
the border soon. Water
for drinking glasses, flushing
toilets, sprinkling
lawns, and filing swimming
pools. Planned is a
join U.S.-Mexican effort
to build two huge desalination
plants in Playas de
Rosarito just south of San
Jose that would produce
150 million gallons of
October 17, 2011
water each day, more than
enough to supply over
300,000 homes on both
sides of the border.
