Man Charged with Hiding Meth in Mouth
iff’s narcotics detectives
charged a Tellico Plains
man with possession of
Schedule II meth on
Thursday, following a traffic
stop in Sweetwater in
which the man tried to
hide a baggie of meth between
his back teeth and
gums.
Holloway
Methamphetamine enters
the body in several
ways, so meth officers say,
but usually when one
hides his meth, the mouth
is pretty far down the list
of secret places.
The man was identified
as Jeffery Daniel Holloway,
29, of Mecca Pike,
Tellico Plains.
The detectives said
they watched Holloway
and a known methamphetamine
dealer move
the meth between them
and observed Holloway
stuff the baggie into his
pocket and drive away in
his car.
During the stop, Holloway
took the bag from
the pocket and put it in his
mouth. The detectives removed
it, identified it as
probable meth, and arrested
Holloway.
The chief prosecutor
of the International Criminal
Court said late on
Thursday that the killing
of former Libyan leader
Moammar Gadhafi might
have been a war crime.
Luis Moreno-Ocampo
told reporters the way
Gadhafi was killed –
mocked, beaten, abused,
and then shot – would be
investigated, even though
Gadhafi, when alive,
showed no mercy during
countless brutal murders
of his countrymen.
Meanwhile, the chairman
of Libya’s National
Transitional Council on
Friday called on Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad
to step down, proclaiming
the Syrian people have the
right to determine their
own destiny. Mustafa
Abdul-Jalil said al-Assad
could place his name on
an election ballot and see
if in a democratic vote the
people want him.
An investigation commissioned
by the Conference
of Bishops and the
Dutch Religious Conference
revealed on Friday
that tens of thousands of
children have been victims
of sexual abuse by
the Roman Catholic
Church in the Netherlands
since 1945. The
commissions estimated
that 10,000 to 20,000 minors
in Catholic orphanages,
boarding schools,
and seminaries were raped
and abused, while the
church covered up the activities
in “cultural silence.”
Around The globe
Russian agents said on
Friday that officials seized
radioactive metal from the
luggage of an Iranian passenger
bound for Tehran,
though the luggage’s
owner was not detained.
The incident occurred
“some time ago,” but an
investigation was underway
to sort out the facts.
Iran officials announced
on Friday that
the country’s military
would hunt down any
American spy drones that
entered the airspace of the
nation, saying if the U.S.
continues its aggression,
Tehran would not “be
idle.”
Google received a
patent on Friday for a “driverless”
automobile that
would allow the vehicle to
transition from human to
autonomous control,
meaning it would drive
you to wherever you
might want to go, to
grandma’s house, the grocery
store, a school board
meeting, or a vacation destination.
(The procedure
uses “sensors” on the roadway
that reads a “code” on
the car and then via GPS
drives to the exact location
through a combo of
map data and visual landmarks.)
And the Guinness
World Record Book on
Friday named the world’s
shortest woman. She is
Jyoti Amge, an 18-year-old
Indian from the Asian
town of Nagpur, who
stands at a fraction under
25 inches, a height smaller
than that of a two-year-old
child.
Tellico Plains Cubs Defeat Madisonville Eagles
Allen Roberts
The Madisonville Middle
School Eagles hosted
their county rivals, the
Tellico Plains Cubs, in
hardwood action Thursday
night. Tellico Plains
jumped out to a ninepoint
lead in the first half
and then held off a furious
second half comeback attempt
by the Eagles, taking
the win 30-27.
You could feel the intensity
in the first period as
both teams took the floor,
putting their undefeated
records on the line. The
action started out slow
with both squads measuring
each other up and
being really cautious on
defense. Madisonville's
Tanner Moser hit a threepoint
shot and Jacob Britton
made a bucket for the
home team. Tellico Plains’
Dakota Rinehart scored
four points, Alex Robertson
had two points, and
Ryan Bookout made a free
throw, giving the Cubs the
lead, at the end of the first
quarter 7-5.
The second period,
would prove to be Madisonville's
undoing, Tellico,
outscored the home team
11-4 in the frame, Colten
Carter scored five points,
Rinehart added four
points and Blake Hunt
added a bucket for the visitors.
The Eagles had two
points apiece from Wes
Hampton and Moser, but
Congressional negotiators
reached agreement
on Thursday to avert a
weekend federal shutdown
visit Cuba and send money
At the same time,
Lady Eagles Take Down Lady Cubs
Allen Roberts
Thursday, December
15th. The Tellico Plains
Lady Cubs paid a visit to
their county rivals, the
Madisonville Lady Eagles,
for middle school basketball
action. The Lady Eagles
showed they were
ready for the challenge,
jumping to an early lead
and playing stingy defense,
taking the victory
33-20.
The first period saw
Madisonville come out on
fire. All five Lady Eagles
starters scored while their
defense held Tellico Plains
to one bucket, which was
a three-pointer by Lady
Cub Clarissa Lambert.
Lady Eagle Savannah
Atkins had seven points,
Mattie Torbett scored
four, Kayana Henderson
tallied three, and Haley
Isbill and Lynsey Miller
made a basket each, helping
Madisonville to a 15-3
lead after one quarter of
play.
The Lady Cubs buckled
down and tightened up
on defense in the second
frame, holding the home
team to only three points
in the quarter, but Madisonville
matched that defensive
effort, giving up
only two points to the visitors.
Torbett scored all
three of the Lady Eagles
points with a bucket and
a free throw and Brianna
Shaw made two free
throws for Tellico Plains’
total, and Madisonville
led 18-5 at halftime.
The defenses continued
to get after each other
during the third period,
with each team scoring
only six points in the
frame. The home team’s
Atkins scored all six of the
points as the players kept
working the ball into the
low blocks. Tellico Plains
worked the ball inside as
well and Bailey Hunt had
a bucket and two free
throws, giving her four
points and Lambert
scored two points for the
Lady Cubs, and at the end
of three, the Lady Eagles
led 24-11.
In the fourth period the
offenses come to life. The
Lady Cubs gave great effort,
trying to mount a
comeback. Lambert hit a
three-pointer and a free
throw, giving her four
points, Hanna Phillips and
Sarah Bryson each scored
a bucket and Hunt, tossing
in a free throw, provided
Tellico Plains with
nine points in the frame.
The Lady Eagles would
match that effort however.
Atkins scored four
points, Hannah White
and Emily Hawkins had
two points apiece, and
Taylor Moses made a free
throw, giving the home
team nine points in the
quarter and allowing the
Lady Eagles to claim the
victory 33-20.
Madisonville's Atkins led
all scorers with 17 points,
Torbett had four points,
Henderson added three
points, Isbill, L. Miller,
White, and Hawkins had
two points each, and
Moses tossed in one point.
Lambert led Tellico
Plains in scoring with nine
points. Hunt added five
points and Phillips, Shaw,
and Bryson scored two
points apiece.
for at least half of the success
or failure of the
breeding season, and research
has shown that
about 20 percent of all
bulls have problems that
affect their breeding
soundness.
Most of these bulls are
not sterile but are less efficient
at breeding than is
desirable.
Bulls that pass breeding
soundness exams return
$17 or more per cow bred
than bulls that do not pass
the exam. These bulls sire
more calves earlier in the
breeding season, therefore
A complete breeding
soundness exam conducted
by your veterinarian
should include a
physical examination, a
specific examination of
the bull’s reproductive
tract and analysis of the
bull’s semen.
During the breeding
season, a bull spends most
of his time following cows
to determine when to
breed the cows. Anything
that makes him less likely
to follow, mount and mate
cows makes him less efficient
as a breeder.
The bull’s physical
exam should pay particular
attention to the bull’s
eyes and rear legs as these
are most likely areas for
significant problems to
develop.
The bull’s reproductive
system should be carefully
and completely examined.
There are a number of
fairly common problems
of the reproductive system
that can limit a
breeding bull’s success.
Smaller than desirable
scrotal size is the most
common problem of the
reproductive system of
the bull.
Two analyses of the
bull’s semen must be performed
with a microscope
capable of magnifying the
sperm cells up to 1,000
times. The first, called
semen motility, determines
the percentage of
the bull’s sperm cells that
are alive. Dead sperm cannot
produce pregnancies.
The live sperm cell count
for a successful bull will be
at least 30 percent. Semen
morphology is the shape
and form of individual
sperm cells. At least 70
percent of the bull’s sperm
cells must be shaped and
formed normally for the
bull to be an efficient
breeder.
Brown also said everyone
affected by the switch
from three districts to
four would have to be notified
by mail of the
change.
“At best, around
11,000,” he said, “but it
could be 16,000-plus and
possibly as many as
30,000, or nearly all the
voters. We don’t know
just yet.”
Figure in the state’s redistricting
as well, which
will take place in January,
and who knows how the
boundary lines might fall
or what effect the adjustments
might have on
Monroe County.
“And then there’s the
federal redistricting,”
Brown said. “We could
lose Duncan if enough of
the population has
shifted.”
A couple of changes
Pick up or
Delivery
will take place soon,
Brown said. One, the beginning
of the qualifying
period for school board
candidates has been postponed
from January 6 to
February 6. And the
Fourth District voting
won’t take place until August
of next year, when
the general election occurs.
“There will be no
change going into the
March primary elections,”
Brown said. “We’ll still be
operating on three districts
then.”
BUZZ NOTE: On
Thursday, the Monroe
County Commission approved
four districts for
the Board of Education.
Each district will have
roughly the same population
and will be represented
on the school
board by two board members,
for a total of eight
At present, the school
board has nine members
scattered over three districts.
