A Sweetwater man charged with rape of
a child cut his wrists with a razor just minutes
before a sentencing hearing on Tuesday.
The hearing in Monroe County Criminal
Court was scheduled on September 25,
when 46-year-old Charles Edgar Ledford
entered guilty pleas to two Class A felony
counts of rape of a child, two Class B
felony counts of aggravated sexual battery,
one count of sexual exploitation of a
minor, and child abuse and neglect. The
charges came after police officers found
Ledford in possession of hundreds of video
tapes, some with him and children engaging
in sex acts.
After hearing about a
six-year-old child who had
been diagnosed with brain
cancer in 2009 and how
the child was confronting
the disease with courage
and bravery, Kenny Mize
looked deeper and learned
the small boy possessed a
Smile Of the Day!
love of law enforcement,
the military, and emergency
services personnel.
The child was Nathan
Norman, who lives in Virginia
and continues to battle
the dreadful disease.
High Flying Eagles Soar Over vonore
Allen Roberts
The Vonore Blue Devils
traveled down Highway
411 to square off against
their county rivals, the
Madisonville Middle
School Eagles Thursday
night, proving they were
more than ready for the
challenge and defending
their home court on
homecoming night with a
big victory, 57-16.
Madisonville jumped out
early in the first period,
playing great offense and
defense. The Eagles guard
tandem of Austen Harmon
and Josh Brewster
both made four baskets
for eight points apiece and
Eli Beard made a bucket
for two points. Vonore's
Aaron Smith and Trey
Cook both made a shot
for two points each, and
after one quarter of play
the Eagles led 18-4.
The defenses held the
upper hand in the second
period as Madisonville
outscored the Blue Devils
9-6. Jordan Lingerfelt had
a basket and drained a
three-pointer for five
points and Kayne Roberts
and John Douglas Wiggins
both had a bucket for two
points each. Vonore's
Chase Summey made a
lay-up and buried a threepointer
for five points and
Braden Hansen tossed in a
free throw for one point,
and at the half Madisonville
led 27-10.
The Eagles’ defense really
flexed its muscles in
the third period, holding
Vonore to just two points,
those coming from Smith.
The Madisonville offense
played off that great defensive
effort and put 17
points on the board, as
Harmon made three baskets
and a free throw for
seven points, Joc Upton
hit three baskets for six
points, and Roberts and
Beard both made a shot
for two points apiece, and
after three quarters of play
Madisonville led 44-12.
Both teams continued to
play hard in the fourth period
but the Eagles still extended
their lead,
outscoring the Blue Devils
13-4 in the frame. Chris
Lady Eagles Take Homecoming Win Against vonore
Allen Roberts
Homecoming is always
a special night at our local
schools and it was no different
at Madisonville
Middle School Thursday
evening as the Lady Eagles
were all fired up after a
week of festivities at the
school. Add a huge crowd
and the fact that the Lady
Eagles were hosting their
county rivals, the Lady
Blue Devils of Vonore, and
you could feel the excitement
in the air. Both
teams battled hard and
gave great effort, but it
was Madisonville who
took control of the game
early and never looked
Madisonville played
stingy defense in the first
period and only gave up
two free throws to Vonore,
those coming from Jill
Murr. The Lady Eagles’ offense
also did its part, for
Madi Haymes made a layup
and buried a threepointer
for five points,
Bailee Lane hit two baskets
for four points, and
Taylor Moses made a
bucket for two points, and
after one quarter of play
Madisonville led 11-2.
The Lady Eagles continued
to build on that lead in
the second period,
outscoring the Lady Blue
Devils 13-4. Emily
Hawkins and Moses both
made a pair of baskets for
four points each, Shelby
Davidson made a jumper
for two points, Kenzie
Williams made a couple of
free throws for two points,
and Haymes tossed in a
free throw for one point.
Vonore's Myranda Fowler
and Cassie Belcher hit a
basket for two points
apiece, and at the half
Madisonville led 24-6.
The Lady Blue Devils
showed a lot of heart and
no quit, outscoring the
Lady Eagles 10-7 in the
fourth period. Belcher and
Fowler both made a trey
for three points each, Allison
both made a basket for
two points each. Madisonville's
Katie Peery,
Haleigh Jones, and Lynd-
and that produced the
final score with the Lady
Lane led Madisonville in
scoring with 11 points.
Haymes scored nine,
Moses added six, Hawkins
rebounds, Davidson, Harris,
Williams, Peery, Jones,
points apiece, and Roberts
Murr led Vonore with
seven points and 10 rebounds.
Belcher also
scored seven points,
Game One of “Game for the Cure”
Lady Panthers Maul Lady Cubs
Tulli Cole
Pink socks, pink-lettered
jerseys, and pink
armbands danced across
the court, even as pink
balloons and other rosyhued
decorations glistened
on the walls of the
Rural Vale gymnasium. For
Monday night brought out
not only a rivalry match
between the RVS and
TPJHS, but also the
“Game for the Cure”. Several
young men and
women, showcasing some
basketball moxie, fought
not only for the title of
victor, but also for cancer
victims and cancer awareness.
Proceeds from the
benefit went towards supporting
Wanda Belcher.
The first game of the
night belonged to the
Lady Panthers and Lady
Cubs. And it was a contest
that favored the Lady Panthers
from start to finish.
Rural Vale opened up
the game with a 6-0 run,
courtesy of points made
by Kaitlin Taylor, Mazie
Hooper, and Jacobi Lynn.
The Lady Cubs, on the
other hand, struggled
mightily on the offensive
end. Their first basket did
not come until the 3:59
marker. Clarissa Lambert
was responsible for that
duo of points.
But the Lady Cubs’
troubles did not end there.
The Lady Panthers continued
to hound them on
defense, even as the Tellico
Plains squad missed
shot after shot. The Lady
Cubs nabbed just 3 points
more in the first quarter.
It was an obstacle they
would face throughout the
game.
The Lady Panthers had
no such troubles. They
steamrolled ahead, adding
to their weighty lead, and
soon commanded the
scoreboard by a margin of
5-18.
Their dominating rule
did not end in the second
quarter, either. Cheyenne
Thompson, M. Hooper, J.
Lynn, and Ally Williams
paved the way in a 13-0
run. Not long afterward,
A. Williams tallied yet another
basket to her name.
Rural Vale’s defense also
shone, making away with
several steals and stopping
many Tellico possessions
in their tracks.
The Lady Cubs did not
have nearly so much luck.
C. Kirkpatrick fought for
and won their only 4
points, with the first not
coming until nearly 5 minutes
had passed in the
quarter.
The score at halftime
was 9-33.
Lady Cubs exchanged
some quick blows in the
early moments of the second
half. A. Williams
opened proceedings with
a basket, but C. Kirkpatrick
quickly offered up
her response: a bucket of
her own. M. Hooper answered
it by netting herself
a duo of points on the
other end.
But then drought fell
over the land, one that affected
both teams. No
shots fell, and no points
were added to the scoreboard
for quite some time.
It was the Lady Panthers
who came out of this
dry-spell first. Ending it
was J. Lynn, thanks to a
nothing-but-net threepointer.
Tellico Plains’ C. Kirkpatrick
responded with an
offensive put-back, but
from then on out the momentum
favored Rural
Vale. The Lady Panthers
snatched 7 more points in
the third quarter. The
Lady Cubs had none.
The score at the end of
the third quarter was 13-
49.
C. Thompson returned
an offensive rebound, and
J. Lynn picked a pocket
and earned a pair of
points, to open up the
fourth and final quarter.
Those were the Lady Panthers’
last baskets for a
while. They did not find
another until late in the
quarter, when Chloe Yearwood’s
steal turned into a
bucket by J. Lynn.
The Lady Cubs were
unable to close the gap in
the meanwhile, however.
C. Kirkpatrick nailed two
free-throws, and made
away with a steal for the
basket as well, but those 4
points were the Lady
Cubs’ last.
The final score was 17-
It takes a real man to
certainly the case during
the second game of the
“Game for the Cure”
event, which went down
at Rural Vale on December
10. Both the Panthers
and the visiting Cubs bore
pink socks and pink armbands
in honor of the
event, standing firm in
their support of Wanda
In those early minutes,
this rivalry-match was an
second quarter by the
that, and as the night wore
on the Cubs added still
more distance between
themselves and the Panthers.
They built up an impressive
Panthers were never able
back-to-back blows—
thanks to a three-pointer
by Elisha White—before
the Panthers found
their first few points;
those eventually came off
a team-up play by JT Dalton
and Tannor Thomas.
E. White and David
Crace captured the next 5
points for Tellico Plains,
but the Panthers were not
slow in giving their response.
Zach Haynes put
away a bucket and JT Dalton
nailed a nothing-butnet
three, slicing into the
Cubs’ shaky lead.
The score at the end of
the first quarter was 11-7.
Z. Haynes snatched an
early two points in the second,
bringing the Panthers
to within 2 of their opponents
(11-9).
It was then that the
Cubs ripped and roared
forward, tearing through
their rivals, enjoying not
just one stampeding run
but two. The first, of the
7-0 variety, was led by E.
White and D. Crace.
Paving the way for the second
run (a 9-0 breed) was
E. White, Cody Swanson,
frenzies gave the Cubs
clear control of the scoreboard.
struggled. Not only
the first quarter returned
Officials in Michigan
called the BUZZ on Monday,
he explained he had
not appeared in court nor
had he been charged with
the driving offense. The
BUZZ sent him to general
sessions court, where the
tiny paragraph originated.
There, court officials
took over. And on Tuesday,
December 11, Judge
Reed Dixon issued an
him with DUI. The arrestee
provided the name,
date of birth, and address
On December 4, the
individual claiming to be
Hysell pleaded in court to
to a state parole and
Convicted of child rape and other felonies involving
sex acts with children, Charles Ledford is escorted
to a waiting area in criminal court, following
his 84-year sentence on Tuesday. Ledford cut his
wrists with a concealed razor just prior to his sentencing
hearing, but only scratched them slightly,
failing to stop the hearing for another mental evaluation.
the skin,” Monroe County
EMS Director Randy
White explained to Judge
Amy Reedy afterward.
“The lacerations to his
wrist were superficial.”
Public Defender Leon
Shahan said his client
made “a valid attempt to
take his own life,” calling
for a stop to the hearing
and the need for a mental
evaluation.
But Reedy would have
none of it, later calling
Ledford “dishonest” and
“at times, faking.”
The hearing lasted the
better part of two hours
and Reedy heard from
Probation and Parole Officer
Jill Koffman, who
provided a pre-sentencing
report, from Sweetwater
Police Detective Kevin
Watson, and the mother
of one of the child victims
of Ledford.
Koffman detailed Ledford’s
past criminal history,
which included theft,
shoplifting, and marijuana
convictions, plus two convictions
in 1994 when
Ledford was 28 years old –
U.S. Secretary of Defense
Leon Panetta announced
on Tuesday that
intelligence sources had
seen no new aggressive
steps to lead the country
to believe Syria was
preparing to use chemical
weapons. The monitoring
of two dozen bases believed
to have such
weapons stored would
continue, Panetta said.
At the same time, the
U.S. recognized the Syrian
Opposition Council on
Tuesday in a diplomatic
move that senators and
representatives said would
help pave the way for a
new Syrian government.
The United Kingdom and
France had already recognized
the SOS and begun
providing financial assistance.
Lawmakers in Washington
on Tuesday expressed
doubt and
uncertainty over the
Obama administration’s
plan to send 20 F-16
fighter jets to Egypt,
which already had over
200 of the planes delivered
when former President
Hosni Mubarek was
in power. The gift would
cost the United States $213
million and has been raising
questions about the allegiance
of current
President Mohammed
Morsi.
Doctors in Cuba began
operating on Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez
on Tuesday, following a
reappearance of cancer
despite a year and a half of
surgeries and treatments.
Information Minister
Chavez had “absolute confidence”
that he would
three previous operations.
Earth got a close shave
on Tuesday, as a newfound
asteroid zipped between it
and the Moon just two
days after astronomers
found it. Asteroid 2012
XE54 was 120 feet wide
and came within 140,000
miles of the planet and
being an “orbiting asteroid”
was figured to come
back around and pass by
again in less than three
years.
And worldwide, this
week will be the annual celestial
treat for stargazers
as the bright meteor
shower, the Geminids, will
grace the heavens, with
peak activity coming on
Thursday. One needs no
binoculars or a telescope,
but bare eyes. Wait until
the moon sets and around
10 p.m. the meteors will
come out to play: as many
as 100 to 150 per hour.
Find a dark area, let your
eyes adjust, and watch the
“shooting stars” light a
path across the sky.
Ledford performing sex
acts on an 18-month-old
child and another child
two- to three-years old,
acts so deviant that there
would be no way to describe
them in print. In
one, Watson says Ledford
child’s diaper.
Another tape, Watson
said, showed two pre-teen
girls having sexual relations
with Ledford, first
one and then the other.
Watson placed videos
made by Ledford at the
TMG swimming pool, at
cheerleader activities, and
other places, the cameras
pointed at underage females
When asked by prosecutor
Paul Rush if Ledford
