A Sweetwater man charged with rape of 

a child cut his wrists with a razor just minutes 

before a sentencing hearing on Tuesday. 

The hearing in Monroe County Criminal 

Court was scheduled on September 25, 

when 46-year-old Charles Edgar Ledford 

entered guilty pleas to two Class A felony 

counts of rape of a child, two Class B 

felony counts of aggravated sexual battery, 

one count of sexual exploitation of a 

minor, and child abuse and neglect. The 

charges came after police officers found 

Ledford in possession of hundreds of video 

tapes, some with him and children engaging 

in sex acts.

early in the first period, 

playing great offense and 

defense. The Eagles guard

evening as the Lady Eagles

on the walls of the 

Rural Vale gymnasium. For 

Monday night brought out 

not only a rivalry match 

between the RVS and 

TPJHS, but also the 

“Game for the Cure”. Several 

young men and 

women, showcasing some 

basketball moxie, fought 

not only for the title of 

victor, but also for cancer 

victims and cancer awareness. 

Proceeds from the 

benefit went towards supporting 

Wanda Belcher. 

The first game of the 

night belonged to the 

Lady Panthers and Lady 

Cubs. And it was a contest 

that favored the Lady Panthers 

from start to finish. 

Rural Vale opened up 

the game with a 6-0 run, 

courtesy of points made 

by Kaitlin Taylor, Mazie 

Hooper, and Jacobi Lynn. 

The Lady Cubs, on the 

other hand, struggled 

mightily on the offensive 

end. Their first basket did 

not come until the 3:59 

marker. Clarissa Lambert

steamrolled ahead, adding 

to their weighty lead, and

Their dominating rule

coming until nearly 5 minutes

her own. M. Hooper answered

a duo of points on the 

other end. 

But then drought fell 

over the land, one that affected 

both teams. No 

shots fell, and no points 

were added to the scoreboard 

for quite some time. 

It was the Lady Panthers 

who came out of this 

dry-spell first. Ending it 

was J. Lynn, thanks to a 

nothing-but-net threepointer. 

Tellico Plains’ C. Kirkpatrick

from then on out the momentum

the meanwhile, however.

at Rural Vale on December 

10. Both the Panthers 

and the visiting Cubs bore 

pink socks and pink armbands

Belcher. 

In those early minutes, 

this rivalry-match was an

to a waiting area in criminal court, following 

his 84-year sentence on Tuesday. Ledford cut his 

wrists with a concealed razor just prior to his sentencing 

hearing, but only scratched them slightly, 

failing to stop the hearing for another mental evaluation.
