the proverbial
golden goose by selling
land around the lake to developers
and affluent retirees.
But the change to the
landscape of Vonore was
decades earlier in the making.
TVA developed the
concept, the idea, of Tellico
Dam in 1939, yet it
wasn’t until 1961 that
things got really moving.
World War II came about
in the 1940s and TVA preferred
to push through five
other dam projects in the
1950s.
As the 60s kicked in, the

agency estimated the creation
of the Little T lake
would require 23,000
acres from 525 land tracts.
Finally, in 1968, TVA
began the Tellico Dam
project.
Buying up the earth,
TVA purchased what it
wanted and paid property
owners around $600 per
acre for their land.
In today’s world, Tellico
Lake real estate sells for
over $600 – not for an
acre, but per linear foot of
shoreline.
But back to the dam.
The project almost got the
kiss of death when in the
early 70s the endangered
snail darter fish turned up
in the river, a hopeful find
– for opponents - that
brought the 1973 Endangered
Species Act into play
and it looked like the
three-inch fish had
stopped a $110 million endeavor.
But a ruling by a
federal judge in 1976
negated the insularity of
the fish and supporters of
the dam cheered. However,
the judge’s ruling was
subsequently overturned
by the Sixth Circuit Court
of Appeals as well as the
U.S. Supreme Court, and
the fish won again. The
upper courts said the snail
darter’s habitat could not
be destroyed. Dam opponents
cheered.
But in 1978, Tennessee
Senators Howard Baker
and Jim Sasser and Representative
John J. Duncan
Sr got together, lobbying,
wheeling and dealing, and
so forth, and pushed
through a Congressional
amendment in Washington,
among other actions,
that ordered the dam
completed.
Because of a water project
tied to the amendment
that would benefit Georgia,
President Jimmy
Carter, an opponent of the
Tellico Dam, took a powder
and declined to veto
the amendment.
Supporters cheered.
And the rest is history.
BUZZ Note: If anyone
remembers, the local challenge
to the massive TVA
organization over the dam
was not entirely in vain,
for it led to the giant
agency’s abandonment of
a proposed dam on the
Duck River in Columbia,
Tennessee, which was
termed “more valuable biologically
than the Little
T.”
