Among the highlights of the evening, the commissioners approved a $55,370.40 outlay to repaint the courthouse trim and clock tower and to install new hands for the courthouse tower clock. Coming in with a $53,870.40 painting bid was WVCA Construction of Madisonville; Maryville’s Miller Welding and Fabrication secured the making of the clock hands with a $1,500 submission. The commissioners – Marty Allen, Wanda Alexander, Gudger Bill Bivins, Richard Kirkland, Judy Lee, Bennie Moser, and Roger Thomas – approved a resolution for a state community development block grant not exceed $500,000 for water line extensions from the town of Madisonville into the community of Gudger. Asked by Lee why the vehicles had to be scrapped, Moser told her that everything eventually ages, that the vehicles were seven and years old and both were about worn out. “And we put them up for bids,” said Alexander, “but no one wanted them. So we’re selling them for scrap and at least getting something.” Yates addressed the commission regarding the actions of the Justice Committee and its search for new ground on which to build a jail. “We’re in the process of considering three pieces of property to recommend the best tract to the commission,” he said. “Our determinations will be presented at the next meeting of the Justice Committee and in turn brought here to you at our next county commission meeting. Also approved were new uniforms for the county’s Board of Education Maintenance Department, reclassification of salaries in the Chancery and Probate courts, and an internal shifting of funds for election workers and clerical personnel in the Monroe County Election Commission. The county commission will not meet in December. Its next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22. Hiwassee (Continued from pg 1) English Madrigal Dinner. This year’s dinner will be held on Thursday, December 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hiwassee College Rymer Great Hall (the specially decorated Rymer Cafeteria). The dinner and entertainment are adapted from 15th century traditions of private hospitality at the English Manor houses of landed gentry. The host Lord and his Lady would have invited guests from near and far to come and celebrate special occasions with feasting, singing and general merriment. Usually the Lords and Ladies performed the music, dancing and poetry themselves in the Great Hall of the Manor House, and would at special times allow a select few area townspeople and merchant class to attend the feaste as well. With the sounds and sights of the evening, all will discover Christmas as celebrated in Merrie Olde England.
