Santa Brings a Smile
After a surprise appearance at the annual lighting
of the Madisonville Christmas tree Monday evening,
Santa Claus found his way across College Street to
Main Street to the inside tree at Branches of Monroe
County. There, he greeted several youngsters, providing
them with toys and candy, while listening to their
Christmas toy lists. The Jolly Ole Elf brought smiles
and laughter from the little ones and warm hearts and
grins from the big ones (parents).
Among the highlights
of the evening, the commissioners
approved a
was WVCA Construction
Maryville’s Miller Welding
and Fabrication secured
the making of the clock
The commissioners –
Marty Allen, Wanda
Alexander, Gudger Bill
Judy Lee, Bennie Moser,
and Roger Thomas – approved
a resolution for a
residential and farming
area met the eligibility requirements
of low- to
and the resolution authorized
Mayor Tim Yates to
proceed with the 88-12
Asked by Lee
why the vehicles had to be
scrapped, Moser told her
that everything eventually
were seven and years old
and both were about worn
“And we put them up
for bids,” said Alexander,
“but no one wanted them.
So we’re selling them for
something.”
Yates addressed the
“We’re in the process of
he said. “Our
determinations will be
are adapted
from 15th century traditions
of private hospitality
at the English Manor
houses of landed gentry.
The host Lord and his
Lady would have invited
guests from near and far to
come and celebrate special
occasions with feasting,
singing and general merriment.
Usually the Lords
and Ladies performed the
music, dancing and poetry
themselves in the Great
Hall of the Manor House,
and would at special times
allow a select few area
townspeople and merchant
class to attend the
feaste as well.
With the sounds and
sights of the evening, all
will discover Christmas as
celebrated in Merrie Olde
England. Join Hiwassee
College as they leave the
rush and cares of modern
life and escape to a
leisurely time of cherished
traditions and grand dining.
The Feaste will feature
Monroe County Animal Shelter News
Sam is a wonderful 5
year old Finnish Spitz
Mix. He has been in foster
care since coming to the
shelter, but is looking for
his new forever home.
Sam loves to go for walks,
and is good on a leash. He
will play fetch in the yard.
He is a very trustworthy,
affectionate fellow. He is
housebroken, and gets
along with other dogs and
all humans. He rides well
in the car, gets right in the
front seat and says “Let’s
Go!” Sam also loves to play
in the water! Sam just
loves kids and shows a
very tender side around
them. At a recent Adopt-athon,
Sam placed his head
affectionately in the lap of
a young boy! He has a
wonderful gentle loving
personality, and would
make a perfect family dog
or companion! Call the
shelter to set up a meet
week they took first again
with a limit that weighed
22.60 pounds. Greg and
Tim got second with 22.32
pounds. Roger Borden got
lunker with a 7.40-pound
largemouth.
Then in the McKee
Outdoor tournament last
Dwain Mercer
It never fails that the
biggest bass that you catch
come when it is the most
miserable time to fish.
Cold weather in East Tennessee
means big bass.
And if you can afford
them there is outerwear
that will keep you toasty
warm no matter how cold
it gets. You can wear a
facemask to keep the chill
off your face and special
gloves for your hands. But
I just can't fish with gloves
on. The way I figure it, if
my hands are too cold to
hold the rod, then I need
to quit and go home.
Two Saturdays ago in
Roger's Saturday tournament
on Chickamauga,
Phil and Scott Skofield
weighed in 21 pounds and
a lunker largemouth that
weighed 8.18 pounds. Last
S&S
Saturday out of Pole Cat
on Watts Bar (a three-fish
limit tournament), Randy
and Matt McKee took
first with 14.10 pounds.
They also got lunker with
a 6.1-pound largemouth.
Dustin Franklin got second
with 12.1 pounds. I
told you the big fish are
biting. You just got to be
tough enough to stay out
there after them.
McKee Tour is out of
Lauderdale this Saturday.
Little T
(Continued from pg 1)
ter and developers captured
the proverbial
golden goose by selling
land around the lake to developers
and affluent retirees.
But the change to the
landscape of Vonore was
decades earlier in the making.
TVA developed the
concept, the idea, of Tellico
Dam in 1939, yet it
wasn’t until 1961 that
things got really moving.
World War II came about
in the 1940s and TVA preferred
to push through five
other dam projects in the
1950s.
As the 60s kicked in, the
agency estimated the creation
of the Little T lake
would require 23,000
acres from 525 land tracts.
Finally, in 1968, TVA
began the Tellico Dam
project.
Buying up the earth,
TVA purchased what it
wanted and paid property
owners around $600 per
acre for their land.
In today’s world, Tellico
Lake real estate sells for
over $600 – not for an
acre, but per linear foot of
shoreline.
But back to the dam.
The project almost got the
kiss of death when in the
early 70s the endangered
snail darter fish turned up
in the river, a hopeful find
– for opponents - that
brought the 1973 Endangered
Species Act into play
and it looked like the
three-inch fish had
stopped a $110 million endeavor.
But a ruling by a
federal judge in 1976
negated the insularity of
the fish and supporters of
the dam cheered. However,
the judge’s ruling was
subsequently overturned
by the Sixth Circuit Court
of Appeals as well as the
U.S. Supreme Court, and
the fish won again. The
upper courts said the snail
darter’s habitat could not
be destroyed. Dam opponents
cheered.
But in 1978, Tennessee
Senators Howard Baker
and Jim Sasser and Representative
John J. Duncan
Sr got together, lobbying,
wheeling and dealing, and
so forth, and pushed
through a Congressional
amendment in Washington,
among other actions,
that ordered the dam
completed.
Because of a water project
tied to the amendment
that would benefit Georgia,
President Jimmy
Carter, an opponent of the
Tellico Dam, took a powder
and declined to veto
the amendment.
Supporters cheered.
And the rest is history.
BUZZ Note: If anyone
remembers, the local challenge
to the massive TVA
organization over the dam
was not entirely in vain,
for it led to the giant
agency’s abandonment of
a proposed dam on the
Duck River in Columbia,
Tennessee, which was
termed “more valuable biologically
than the Little
T.”
Two suicide car bombs
tore through a Damascus
suburb just minutes apart
on Wednesday, killing 34
persons and injuring 83
others, according to state
media, which added the
Christian and Druse area
was known for its loyalty
to President Bashar al-
Assad. In the northern
part of the country, a rebel
opposition group claimed
to have brought down a
Syrian MiG-23 fighter jet
near the rebel-held town
of Daret Azzeh.
The two highest appeals
courts in Egypt
called off work and suspended
their deliberations
on Wednesday to join the
protests against presidential
decrees that provided
the country’s Islamist
President Mohammed
Morsi almost absolute
powers. The lower courts
of the nation quit work as
well, describing Morsi’s
decrees as “unprecedented”
assaults on the judiciary,
“defying belief.”
On Tuesday, an Egyptian
court convicted in absentia
seven Egyptian
Coptic Christians and a
Florida-based American
pastor, sentencing each
one to death on charges
linked to an anti-Islamist
film that earlier sparked
riots in the Muslim world.
Te case was viewed as
largely symbolic as most of
the defendants live in the
United States.
Prices for parking
neared records highs on
Wednesday, a side effect of
government curbs to cool
the housing market as
speculation continued in
the wake of a “hot” housing
market in the tiny nation.
This past weekend, a
developer sold 500 parking
spots at a new suburban
apartment complex at
$167,000 each. Ouch.
According to the Associated
the garment factory in
Bangladesh, where a fire
killed 110 persons on Saturday,
made clothes for
Disney, Sears, Walmart,
and other Western brands.
At least one of the American
companies knew of
safety problems in the
country’s garment industry,
which is second only
to China and where over
300 workers have died in
fires since 2006.
Under new regulations
launched in 2008 by President
Raul Castro and
brother Fidel, Cubans
who have not paid taxes
for over a half century will
begin to cough up extra
money beginning on January
1, when market-oriented
reforms take place,
Reuters said on Wednesday.
All taxes in the country
were abolished in 1959
during the nation’s revolution.
schools said it’s not just a
case of being obese, or
even overweight, but
rather where you carry
that excess fat, as fat
stored deep in the gut is
more destructive that fat
