A homeowner in Dallas
shot and killed a man who
climbed through a window
and started to enter
his home, using deadly
force, or the “castle doctrine,”
as prescribed by
law. The intruder was
identified as 33-year-old
Deyton Pipkins, a man
with a lengthy criminal
history that included numerous
charges for theft,
trespassing, and drugs.
In Virginia Beach on
Friday, a pizza shop owner
announced he would give
gun owners a 15 percent
discount if the owners
would bring a gun or concealed
handgun permit to
his business, All Around
Pizza and Deli. Jay Laze
said on Tuesday that since
he made the statement, 80
percent of his customers
brought weapons to his
eatery.
NATIONWIDE
Authorities in Hamilton
County, Ohio, confirmed
on Monday that an
investigation was underway
following comments
earlier this month by a veteran
poll worker that she
voted six times for President
Obama three
months ago. Melowese
Richardson of Cincinnati
said yes, she voted twice,
so her vote would count,
but she was also accused
of voting four more times
using other people’s
names.
The National Weather
Service on Tuesday issued
a forecast that spotlighted
a Pacific Ocean storm that
was expected to bring a
foot or more of snow and
75-mile-per-hour wind
gusts to the mountain
areas of California and
then move on toward the
Midwest, laying down a
blanket of snow in its
wake. Originating in the
Gulf of Alaska, the system
could strike as far inland as
Chicago.
Meanwhile, the National
Climatic Data Center
said on Tuesday that
“climate change” was
bringing less snowfall to
the U.S. Midwest and
Northeast, but at the
same time was ushering in
more weather “knockout
punches.” Officials said
the outlook included
more giant blizzards but
fewer accumulations of
snowfall during the year.
AAA – the Automobile
Association of America –
said on Tuesday U.S. gas
prices had hit a fourmonth
high with 32
straight days of increases
at the pump, where the
national average for a gallon
of regular gasoline was
$3.73, or 43 cents more
than one month ago.
Prices had already topped
$4 in California and
Hawaii, AAA said.
A spokesperson for the
nonprofit National Re-
search Center for Women
and Families said on Tuesday
that research funded
by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration found that
hip replacements were
more likely to fail in
women than in men.
Though the risk for failure
of implants was low, females
were 29 percent
more likely to need repeat
surgery than men in the
first three years.
And according to
George Washington University’s
Dr. Neal Barnard,
Reader’s Forum
The Fair Tax Act proposes
a tax on all new merchandise
and services in
place of all income taxes,
payroll taxes, corporation
taxes, and taxes on dividends,
interest, and capital
gains. Critics of the act,
which proposes a 23 percent
inclusive tax, have
confused the issue by saying
that this law is in reality
a 30% tax. To clear up
this misinformation, consider
the following explanation.
The 23 percent tax is included
in the stated price
of each item or service.
Thus for a $100 item, $23
goes for taxes, and the remaining
$77 pays the cost
of the item. This is the
same as saying that if you
are in the 25 percent income
tax bracket, for
every $100 you earn, $25
goes for taxes and you
keep $75. On the other
hand, if you divide $23 by
$77 you come up with a 30
percent tax; but to be fair,
your income tax rate by
this same method would
be calculated by dividing
$25 by $75, which is 33 percent.
And if you add in your
$7.65 payroll tax for social
security, you now pay
$32.65 and keep $67.35,
which is really a 48.5 percent
tax. Thus, the 30 percent
Fair Tax rate looks
good.
on February 15 was Tracie
M. Hutchinson of Cannon
Ridge Road, Tellico
in a Chrysler on Tellico
Street in Madisonville,
where she displayed
speech that was described
as slurred and eye pupils
appearing to be constricted.
Martin said she performed
sobriety testing
poorly, relating that witnesses
had seen her in a
business earlier taking pills
and almost falling as she
left the business. When
she refused to blood testing,
Martin charged her
with violation of implied
County Sheriff’s Deputy
Michael William Ellis and
John Scott Lloyd, both of
Highway 68, Tellico Plains
each with the offense.
The duo were referenced
as prowlers at a Coker
Creek apartment complex
and when Hunt pulled
into the parking lot at the
complex, there they were,
behaving with unsteady
movements and smelling
Sheriff’s Deputy Tillman
Steele charged
Thomas Jamie Burchfield
of Highway 411, Madisonville
with resisting stop
after he and Sheriff’s
Captain Bill Johnson attempted
to serve a warrant
on Burchfield.
Burchfield evaded the two
and lit out across a field,
on foot, and kept running
even though Steele called
for him to stop. Steele arrested
Burchfield when
Burchfield ran out of
steam and sat down.
A government official
in Damascus said two
mortars exploded near
one of Syrian President
Bashar Al-Assad’s palaces
on Tuesday, though it was
not clear whether Assad
was present at the time of
the strike. In Aleppo, a
missile attack leveled a
stretch of buildings and
killed 19 persons, the latest
salvo in the fierce and
bloody seven-month battle
for the country’s largest
city and economic center.
The Coast Guard said
on Monday the cause of
the fire that left the Carnival
cruise liner Triumph
without power for five
days was a leak in a fuel oil
return line that sprayed
onto a hot surface in the
vessel’s engine room, and
because the resultant fire
burned so hot the crew
could not immediately extinguish
the blaze. The
fire left 4,200 passengers
and crew with no electrical
power, a scarcity of
food, and few working toilets.
In a court hearing in
Pretoria, South Africa, on
Tuesday, “Blade Runner”
Oscar Pistoria said he
Police in Brussels began
a search on Tuesday for
eight men who punched a
hole in a security fence at
the city’s international airport,
drove onto the tarmac,
and armed with
weapons robbed a Swissbound
of diamonds, driving off
into the darkness in two
vehicles. The heist was estimated
at $50 million.
That meteor that
slashed across the Russian
sky on Friday was the
largest to hit the Earth in
a century, a research team
from Ural Federal University
said on Tuesday, estimating
its size as 55 feet
diameter and its weight at
10,000 tons. Data from
global sensors said the energy
