ATTENDANCE FOR MAY MEETING: 37 MEMBERS & 6 GUESTS:
JUNE MEETING: RULES AND TECHNIQUES: With the closing of the Cook County
Forest Preserve to Metal Detecting, this may be a good time to review and discuss the
RULES AND TECHNIQUES of metal detecting. The what, when and where are very
important aspects of our hobby. Share what you know, along with tips that make our
hobby great and ecologically smart! Everyone should review the CODE OF ETHICS
below, are you filling in all those holes and taking away all the junk you find? I hope so,
saving our hobby is really ninety-eight important now!
_____________________________________________________________________________________
"CODE OF ETHICS"
NEVER LEAVE HOLES! This is a cardinal rule and MUST be strictly observed! Use a small tool to
recover your target NEVER a shovel. Replace all dirt and tamp down turf leaving ground level. Remove
ALL objects you find, including junk.. wear a nail apron or jacket with large pockets. Dispose of all
unwanted refuse properly.
REMEMBER THE HOBBY YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN!

The Scoop, June 2012
Wow, May was a very long month. I'm looking forward to June just to take a breather. A quick
recap.
The month started out with news from the Cook County Forest Preserve District that an
ordinance has been enacted that effectively bans metal detecting within the preserve. I would
encourage all MHRS members to visit the MHRS website and review the language of the ordinance. I
would also recommend that all MHRS members cease metal detecting activities on CCFPD properties
until further notice. In response to this change, we are forming a group to develop a proposal for
adoption of a “Recreational Metal Detecting” program on CCFPD properties. There is no assurance
that we will succeed, but at this point this is our approach. Concerning the MHRS Picnic, we intend to
hold the picnic as planned. I will be contacting the CCFPD in an attempt to obtain permission to use
our detectors as part of our hunt games. I'll keep you informed. If metal detectors are not allowed, we
will have an alternate activity ready to go.
We also received news that Larry Hoeft passed away. As many of you are aware, Larry had been
struggling with heart disease. His struggles are now over. May he be at peace. On behalf of MHRS, I
extend my condolences to his family and to his friends. Larry was a good man, an active member of
our club to the end and a key to the success of our Charitable Giving efforts. We will miss him dearly. A
person like Larry can not be replaced. We can best honor him by moving forward and building upon
his work. And so we shall. To this end, the board has authorized that a donation be made to the Leydon
Township Food Pantry in his name. Let this be the first of many that we make.
May also brought Beach Hunt hysteria back to Chicago with a vengeance. Although the MHRS
hunt was shortened by the threat of rain, over 50 MHRS members braved the elements for a modified
single hunt on May12th. As luck would have it, as soon as we started the hunt, the weather began to
improve. It happens. Lots of Silver and prizes were collected by the troops. Congrats to Jim Evans and
Art Schroeder for winning the detectors. On behalf of MHRS, I would like to thank all the MHRS
members and our industry supporters that donated items to the hunt. As far as that elephant prize? I
want that beauty and I'm willing to make an offer. I'm serious. It's time for an MHRS mascot.
Following on the heels of the MHRS hunt was the Minelab National Detecting Day Hunt held at
Indiana Dunes State Park. A big thank you to Minelab and Windy City for making this happen. It was a
scorcher of a day but an excellent event. As expected, MHRS hunters seized the day. By my count, five
Minelab machines went to MHRS members. Congrats! I would like to thank the members that helped
flag and seed the hunt field. Great work accomplished under very brutal conditions. A special thanks is
also in order for the MHRS hunters that helped the children in their hunt. It was amazing to watch the
children quickly learn to locate and recover targets under the guidance of our hunters. For me, it was
the best part of the event. I would also like to thank Brenda and Leona for keeping a watchful eye over
those of us not wise enough to look after ourselves. THANK YOU! And finally, I would like to
congratulate Ron and Mark for excellent presentations made during the event. Good job guys. Of
course, rumor has it, that this duo has also made a significant Silver Strike on a long forgotten
Chicago Beach. It appears that research and persistence wins the day once again as another chapter is
opened in the legacy known as “The Great Chicago Beach Hunt”. For those of you who might think
this is urban legend, think again. The video of the “The Virgin” is up on You Tube. If you are not excited
about beach hunting in Chicago after watching this video, well, what can I say. Mark and Ron gave us
some great tips on how it's done. It's now up to us to follow through and make 2012 another banner
year.
In closing, I remind all MHRS members to remain respectful of all people and to continue to
pursue our hobby in a responsible manner. We've taken a ding this past month, but we can recover
and advance our cause. It's up to us to be good stewards and to lead the way. I'm confident we will do
so
Pat
IN MEMORY OF:
LARRY WERNER HOEFT
Family man, devoted husband, father and grandfather. Army veteran and
dedicated club member.
We lost a dear friend this month, one we all loved and cherished.
Larry will be remembered for his great smile and warm heart, he always
met you with an out streched hand and a kind word. He served the club
well as Recording Secretary for many years, and more recently as our
Charity Chair.
I will always remember Larry with all those little zip lock bags he
brought in with money he collected from all of his other organizations for
our Penny Project and Food Drive.
I don't know if they take up collections in Heaven, but if they do
Larry will he the first guy in line. God Bless you Larry, we will all miss
you and remember you with great fondness.
Thanks for all the pennies!
CONDOLENCES may be sent to Larry's wife Janet and family at their
home: 1102 79 th Street
MHRS “FAMILY” PICNIC
JULY 15, 2012
BUSSE WOODS, GROVE 4
10 am
It's picnic time again, and MHRS members their families and friends are
cordially invited to join us once again for our annual “FAMILY PICNIC”, with
great food, games excitement. Guests are welcome to join us for good food,
and games, but as usual may not take part in the hunts (if we have them) or
door prize raffle.
Members are asked to bring their favorite picnic dishes to share with
fellow members and guests. The club will provide the Brats, Burgers, and
Hot Dogs along with the buns, chips and of course soft drinks and water. A
real old fashioned family picnic has been our tradition for the past several
years, and everyone seems to enjoy the good food and the camaraderie that
goes along with it. Of course we will need volunteers for the day, to help
with the chef duties, games, and other activities and of course the clean up.
There will be SIGN-UP SHEETS at the June meeting for those
attending and for what you will be bringing. If you can't make the June
meeting please call JUAN FRAGOSO our Picnic Chairperson 630-983-7767
and let him know you are coming and how many guests you will be bringing, as
well as what you will be bringing for the table. He needs to know how many
to prepare for, and to coordinate the menu, we sure don't want cole slaw and
nothing else! We need a variety of things, salads, desserts, baked beans,
fruits and veggies etc, also pickles, condiments, tomatoes and onions, grills
and tools, charcoal and ICE, you get the IDEA! Check with Juan and he can
tell you what we need.
Remember this is where your money from dues, raffles, bake sales, etc.
goes, back to you the members, by the way of Club Hunts, and other
activities like this picnic and our annual Christmas Party. If you don't take
part, you lose out. Don't miss the fun, join us at our “FAMILY PICNIC”
SUNDAY JULY 15, 2012 AT BUSSE WOODS FOREST PRESERVE GROVE 4.
A map to BUSSE WOODS is on the club web-site.
SPRING HUNT 2012:
The weatherman let us down! It rained! It was cold! It was dark and
dreary!
But we had a hunt, we threw all our eggs into one basket so to speak,
and had one BIG “FOR ALL THE MARBLES” HUNT!
And fifty hardy souls loved it! Art Schroeder and Jim Evans won the
detectors and the rest of us picked up silver, silver and more silver along
with prize tokens for gear and stuff. It was a great hunt after all even
though we froze our butts off eating lunch in the shelter house afterwards.
Lets hope that the fall will be sunny and warm and that that hunt will
be bigger and better than ever.
Who did get that crazy Elephant anyway? Will he be back in September
for the “BIG HUNT”? Will you?
MAY PROGRAM: BEACH HUNTING presented by MARK SLINKMAN
was really a great program. Mark did a nice job presenting the facts and
how to's of beach hunting along the shores of Lake Michigan. We learned a
lot about hunting the cuts and troughs and what to look for when hunting in
the water or dry sand. A very informative and interesting presentation that
our members and guests can use to get more fun and production out of our
hobby. Thanks Mark we are looking forward to another great presentation in
the future.
LET'S REMEMBER THESE THINGS THIS MONTH:
14, 2012. The day designated as “FLAG DAY”, that special day we
honor our country's symbol. Fly your flag, not just on this special day,
but every day, show your colors, show you care. I do!
GOD BLESS AMERICA
