Men inget av detta som vi brinner för, ligger sömnlösa på grund av och ständigt, om och om igen formulerar, diskuterar och skapar finns om det inte är för alla dem vi har runt om kring oss, vår publik, våra supportrar, våra medarbetare. Så är det också med detta projekt och allt som det rör. Därför vill vi tacka, tacka alla som ser värdet i ett sånt här projekt, som stöttar, hjälper till, ifrågasätter och håller det vid liv. Såklart tack till juryn som fick kämpa, KulturUngdom som fick ha tilltro och bevisligen såväl hjärterum som stjärterum, Västra Götalandsregionens alla konstbeslutare och fantastiska genomförare, Ungdomsstyrelsen, alla deltagande kommuner, alla föreläsare, Yulia Usova och mest av alla: Konstnärerna! I allmänhet alla konstnärer men i synnerhet ni som deltar i Kmerkt KONST, som alla med ödmjukhet, entusiasm och vilja signerar K-merkt KONST. Till er är denna katalog tillägnad och alla intäkter från den går till er. Mina damer och herrar; låt oss presentera, de K-merkta KONSTnärerna: Sara Habchi Vogler Projektledare teckningar av Anna Andersson The idea behind K-merkt KONST is very simple: We wanted to create a forum and a space for young art in Västra Götalandsregionen. As simple as that, nothing more. We believed that there wasn’t really a common ground for young artists, at least not all of them, together. Some could be found at the art academies, some at the folk high schools, and some where to find in their own private studios. We wanted them to meet, to throw them into the mixer and make a delicious smoothie that could have ten different flavours at the same time, straggling but still refreshingly tasty. So that’s what we made! The result became a travelling exhibition, a serie of seminaries, the catalogue you are reading at the moment and finally, as an summon or conclusion and at the same time an immortalisation, an online guide book and forum for young artists. The Idea was simple, the project became complex, exciting and bigger then we could foresee. First of all, we determinably said that we will commit ourselves and the project to ten artists, of course we would like everybody to be part of the project, but our ideas of a travelling exhibition felt complete and we chose to make a selection rather then letting it entirely free. The instructions to the jury on the other hand, were very strict; There were to be a fifty/fifty division regarding sex, only half the group were allowed to currently be studying at-, or were thru with their studies at an higher artistic education. – You will neither know the names of the applicants, nor background or sex in a first stage. Later, when the first round of selection has been made, you will acknowledge the previous instructions. The process of convincing all of the regional established or non-established venues for art, to receive and accept a project, did from the beginning seem to be easier said than done. At the time we couldn’t even show a sample of what art it were to contain, only capable of presenting its humble and yet firm idea. Send outs of never before seen portions were shipped of, the telephone bill growing enormous and, all though are good spirits, a certain worry seemed to appear. Where were the warm response and embracing welcoming we were more than sure of to meet? Would the travelling exhibition and the seminaries have to be held only at two places, during only somewhat four weeks of time? Were we forced to rethink our plan, to tone it down, to restrict our grand idea? Then suddenly, like the dandelion’s seed capsules that are swept away by the hand of a light breeze, the news of K-merkt KONST seemed to have spread both high and low in the art-western-region and both for autumn,
spring and summer we were suddenly remarkably fully booked for visits at collectively driven galleries, municipally established art institutions and even by possessors of old industrial buildings etc. An enormously exciting melting-point of opportunities. Sure we hade to rethink our plan; to expand and evolve. The places that took on our challenge were Lokstallet in Strömstad, Skövde Art Museum, The Museum of Bohuslän in Uddevalla, Lysekil Art gallery and Sockerbruket in Lidköping. At this very moment others are standing in line to join in! All attention hasn’t gone to the exhibition and the artworks only. Main focus is on the artists and the subjects that concerns K-merkt KONST; the connection and thoughts that appear during the project. Just that will later be put in to the guide book and will continually be discussed in the forum. For this, the plans are many and in some cases also unpredictable, the starting point however takes off from the certain issues that have helped creating the seminary programme and actually the whole project. All through the project we want to highlight different subjects the touches artistry, what it is that’s going on in all of the studios throughout the region, the country and everywhere. What thoughts are there about the existence and what about the future? Is it feared or enthusiastically welcomed? What happens with the artist when her art is connected with the spectator? What happens in that meeting with the art in its self and under what conditions, and maybe at what cost is it shown? Conversations about all this above and much more has in fact gone on, and will continue going on for sure. What we chosen to highlight even more and really dig into are subjects like the following: “A day with seminaries and conversations about how the situation of labour for artists looks like today and what different ways of getting by there is. When the conditions of public funding are changing, what affect and consequence has it on the artists? How does it affect their creating process? By receiving examples from the gallery director, the artist and the art counsellor of the region offer you tips, advices and good knowledge of how to work in the future.” ------------------------------ “Where can you create your own art space? A seminary that deals with the matter of creating your own venue for your art. Jonathan Josefsson and Michele Masucci will guide us thru conversations about traditional and alternative art venues, about creating your own alternative space. About making ground inside the institution walls with either an eagerly awaited premiere or with a critical entrance. Examples thru images will be shown and we will for instance discuss the way of action for getting your art shown. Is it best to collaborate collectively to increase the chance of getting to show your art, or is it possible to claim these art spaces in other ways? What exactly defines an art space?” Further subjects that will be brought up to surface will for example revolve around the different roles inside the art institutions and the role of the artist when meeting with the institutions and other participants of the art world; the decision makers, the financers, the audience, media, critics etc. How to create decent conditions for your artistry thru verbal and written presentation, to formulate your activity in most wanted manor. One very important point that we wish to highlight a little bit extra, is to always turn around and question these given ways of acting, all from different angles and views, with a critical opening and with a strive to in every case, find alternative options if necessary. That’s also why these subjects will unavoidably forever will be discussed, be twisted and turned and there will always be experiences to extract from it, always and ever. But non of this that we are so eager for, that keeps us up at night and that always, over and over makes us strive for better said words, discussing and creating. Non of it would in fact be if it weren’t for all those around us; our audience, our supporters, our co-workers. That’s also the true case with this project and everything it concerns. Therefore we would like to thank all those who acknowledges the value of a project like this one, those who support us, helps out, questions and criticizes and keeps us alive. Big thanks to the jury for their hard work, KulturUngdom for giving this trust and obvious concern and also a warm chair, all those in charge of art in the Västra Götaland region and the fantastic group of people who carry out their demands, Ungdomsstyrelsen, all municipalities participating, all lecturers, Yulia Usova and most of all: the Artists!
