15 energy Hemhavens Amsterdam is an energy port. This is best exemplified by the Hemhavens, which have coal and oil-storage facilities and a power plant. In 2006, Amsterdam’s function as a energy port received a further boost when the volume of oil products, coal and bio-fuel handled here grew further. Oil products and coal now account for 70% of transshipment operations in the Port of Amsterdam. 16 ICOVA CHEMTURA EUROTANK VOPAK ELEKTRICITEITsCENTRALE HEMwEG

‘very customer-oriented’ Vopak has operated from the Port of Amsterdam for years. So far, we’ve only had a small-scale facility in the Petroleumhaven, but this is going to change. In 2006, we signed a declaration of intent for the construction of a new oil terminal. Demand for terminal capacity is on the up, partly as a result of a growing demand for cleaner fuels such as bio-fuels. Why have we decided on Amsterdam? Amsterdam is located in the heart of Northwestern Europe, and the Port of Amsterdam is offering us a fantastic location with good access from the water. Here we will able to realize our plans for a cutting-edge terminal. I’m particularly pleased with the cooperation provided by the Port of Amsterdam. They are very customer-oriented, are prepared to jointly find solutions and are showing great enthusiasm for further development of the port. The Port of Amsterdam is big enough to make great strides forward, yet small enough to maintain personal ties with. We will be building in the Afrikahaven next to Ruigoord –the artists’ community. It was great fun to join a meeting of the Port Club in the Ruigoord Church there. All stakeholders in the Port were present and could meet the artists living and working in Ruigoord, which is a unique spot in the port area. Our company is active around the world, operating 75 terminals in 33 countries. It’s very exciting for me to now develop a new terminal in my own country – the first new Dutch Vopak terminal to be built since the 1970s. We’re going to turn an empty piece of land into a fully functioning facility, where I’ll be able to stand on the jetty to welcome the very first tanker. What could be more exciting than that? hari Dattatreya Commercial Director for Royal Vopak’s Oil Division 1
