PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES<br />
PURPOSE: This conference is designed to update a clinically relevant audience regarding <strong>the</strong> evidence supporting current clinical practices<br />
in pulmonary and critical care medicine. The in<strong>for</strong>mation presented is intended to enhance clinical competence in <strong>the</strong> diagnosis and treatment<br />
of selected pulmonary and critical care disease states.<br />
OBJECTIVES: At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>this</strong> workshop, <strong>the</strong> participant should be able to:<br />
SESSION I: Pulmonary Medicine<br />
• Provide an overview of electromagnetic bronchoscopy, including how it is integrated into <strong>the</strong> evaluation and treatment of pulmonary nodules<br />
• Explore <strong>the</strong> recent controversies resulting from several landmark clinical trials on lung cancer screening<br />
• Syn<strong>the</strong>size succinct plans <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> evaluation and treatment of patients with various disorders of <strong>the</strong> pleural space<br />
SESSION II: Critical Care Medicine<br />
• Integrate <strong>the</strong> physiology of respiratory failure with <strong>the</strong> clinical practice of airway pressure release ventilation (APRV)<br />
• Compare and contrast accepted standards of management <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> general population of critically ill patients with those in critically ill obstetric patients<br />
• Delineate <strong>the</strong> benefits of early mobilization in <strong>the</strong> intensive care unit and review how clinicians can overcome barriers to mobilization inherent in <strong>this</strong> setting<br />

• Introduce <strong>the</strong> concept of <strong>the</strong>rapeutic normo<strong>the</strong>rmia and summarize <strong>the</strong> data supporting its efficacy across several disease states<br />

• Summarize <strong>the</strong> implications of various novel anticoagulants in <strong>the</strong> management of patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding<br />

• Demonstrate how competition between tobacco product marketing and public health education measures has shaped <strong>the</strong> epidemiology of tobacco use in <strong>the</strong> United States<br />
