PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES 

PURPOSE: This conference is designed to update a clinically relevant audience regarding the evidence supporting current clinical practices 

in pulmonary and critical care medicine. The information presented is intended to enhance clinical competence in the diagnosis and treatment 

of selected pulmonary and critical care disease states. 

OBJECTIVES: At the end of this workshop, the participant should be able to: 

SESSION I: Pulmonary Medicine 

• Provide an overview of electromagnetic bronchoscopy, including how it is integrated into the evaluation and treatment of pulmonary nodules 

• Explore the recent controversies resulting from several landmark clinical trials on lung cancer screening 

• Synthesize succinct plans for the evaluation and treatment of patients with various disorders of the pleural space 

SESSION II: Critical Care Medicine 

• Integrate the physiology of respiratory failure with the clinical practice of airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) 

• Compare and contrast accepted standards of management for the general population of critically ill patients with those in critically ill obstetric patients 

• Delineate the benefits of early mobilization in the intensive care unit and review how clinicians can overcome barriers to mobilization inherent in this setting 

SESSION III: Keynote 

• Introduce the concept of therapeutic normothermia and summarize the data supporting its efficacy across several disease states 

SESSION IV: Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine 

• Summarize the implications of various novel anticoagulants in the management of patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding 

• Reflect on differences in the priorities and expectations of lung transplant physicians and lung allograft recipients 

• Demonstrate how competition between tobacco product marketing and public health education measures has shaped the epidemiology of tobacco use in the United States
