HERB KOHL — PRESIDENT
Public servant, philanthropist, businessman and professional sports team
owner. All four accurately describe Herb Kohl, who begins his 19th season as
president and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks organization. Kohl purchased the
team March 1, 1985, from Jim Fitzgerald, ensuring it would remain in
Milwaukee.
"From the very beginning, my association with the Bucks has been a wonderful
experience," Kohl remarked. "Wherever I go, people come up to me and talk
about the team. The opportunity I was given to purchase and to keep the team
here in Milwaukee is one of the most unique and fortunate experiences I’ve
ever enjoyed."
A Milwaukee native who grew up in the Sherman Park neighborhood, Kohl has
maintained a lifetime commitment to his home city and state. He attended
Sherman Elementary School and Milwaukee Washington High School. A 1956
graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Kohl was a roommate with childhood friend and current
Commissioner of Major League Baseball Bud Selig. He went on to earn a Master’s degree from the Harvard
University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1958. Kohl served in the Army Reserve from 1958-64.
From 1959-79, Kohl served in many capacities with the then family-owned Kohl Corporation, operators of grocery
and department stores. His parents had built their first Kohl’s Food Market in the late ‘20s, and from that inauspicious
beginning, grew the business into one of the Midwest’s leading grocery and department store chains. Kohl
was president from 1970 through the sale of the corporation by the family in 1979, and the Kohl’s Department
Stores have now expanded throughout the United States.
After years of involvement in public affairs in Wisconsin, having served as general chairman of Milwaukee's United
Way campaign and state chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, Kohl decided to run for the United States
Senate seat vacated by William Proxmire. He was elected to a six-year term as Wisconsin’s 25th United States
Senator in 1988, re-elected in November of 1994, and again in November of 2000. Kohl serves on three committees
in the Senate: the Appropriations Committee – ranking member of the Agriculture Appropriations
Subcommittee; the Judiciary Committee; and the Special Committee on Aging. He formerly served on the
Governmental Affairs Committee, of which he chaired the Subcommittee on Government Information and
Regulation, and the Special Committee on POW/MIA Affairs.
Involved in a vast array of community-minded projects, Kohl has consistently championed the cause of education.
He established the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Excellence Scholarship and Fellowship Award Program in
1990, as well as the Initiative Scholarship Program in 1997. As of August 2003, the Herb Kohl Educational
Foundation has awarded $4.8 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools. Annually the grants total
$400,000 and are presented to 200 graduating high school students, 100 teachers and 100 schools throughout
Wisconsin.
With a life-long interest in sports, Kohl was one of 10 original investors in the Milwaukee Brewers, and he also initiated
negotiations with then NBA Commissioner Walter Kennedy, which ultimately led to the granting of a franchise
in January of 1968 to a group of Milwaukee investors.
Kohl’s interest in sports does not stop at the professional level. In April of 1995, Kohl donated $25 million to his
alma mater to help provide a state-of-the-art new home for the Badgers. This past January marked the 5th
Anniversary of the opening of the Kohl Center, a sports arena that is home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison
men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the men’s hockey team.
"I was very happy to be in a position to help build a first-rate, state-of-the-art sports arena," said Kohl. "I think it
cements the university’s reputation as one of the premier athletic programs in the Big Ten and the country."
Recognized for his many efforts, Kohl has received numerous awards from throughout the State of Wisconsin
including: an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Ripon College in 1999; Best Corporate Citizen of
1997 by Madison Magazine; the "Kiwanis Milwaukee Award" in 1987; an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from
Cardinal Stritch College of Milwaukee in 1986; the Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau
"Lamplighter Award" in 1986; named "Humanitarian of the Year" in 1986 by the Wisconsin Parkinson Association;
"Wisconsin Sports Personality of the Year" in 1985 by the Milwaukee Pen and Mike Club; and the "Joe Killeen
Memorial Sportsman of the Year" in 1985 by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association.

LARRY HARRIS — GENERAL MANAGER
Larry Harris was named General Manager of the Milwaukee Bucks on July 1, 2003.
Harris, 40, continues an association with the organization that began in 1988, when he
joined the team as a scout/video coordinator under his father, Del Harris, the Bucks Head
Coach from 1987-91.
“Larry Harris is the best person to lead our basketball staff,” Bucks President Herb
Kohl said at Harris’ announcement. “Larry has the experience, the work ethic, and the
respect of everyone in our organization. His relationships within the league and his fine
reputation will serve us well.”
“After spending 15 seasons in player personnel, I am ready to meet this challenge
and I am grateful to Senator Kohl for this opportunity,” Harris said. “Over the past four
years, I have worked with one of the best general managers in the NBA, and my responsibilities
and abilities have increased. I’m confident we will all work together to position
the team well for the coming season and the future.”
Harris was a part of one of the more active summer’s in the team’s recent history, which included naming Milwaukee
native Terry Porter as the eighth Head Coach in franchise history.
Harris was also busy improving the depth of the Bucks roster, signing free agents Brian Skinner, Erick Strickland, Daniel
Santiago and Damon Jones, in addition to the signing of first round draft choice T.J. Ford.
A 15-year veteran of the Bucks basketball staff, Harris served as assistant general manager the past two seasons prior
to his appointment as ‘acting general manager’ following the resignation of Ernie Grunfeld on June 29, 2003. He was
named the team’s director of scouting in 1996, and promoted to director of player personnel in 1998. In 2001, he was
named assistant general manager.
During his tenure with the Bucks, Harris has been involved in every aspect of the team’s basketball operations, including
the scouting of NBA, international and college games, analyzing video, and working with the NBA’s salary cap.
A 1985 honors graduate of Eastern New Mexico University, Harris graduated with a major in mathematics, and was a
four-year member of the Greyhound basketball team (team captain as a senior).
Larry and his wife, JoLayne, have two children, Zachary and Janaya.
matters of the Bucks since 1990 as Treasurer and as a member of the Board of Directors. Burr
has worked with Senator Kohl since 1984, and manages the Senator’s business office in addition to
his role with the Bucks. He was involved in the Senator’s purchase of the team in 1985 and during the
eighteen years Kohl has owned the team, has been involved in virtually all aspects of the business.
Born and raised in the Fox River Valley, Burr received both his undergraduate and law degree (J.D.)
from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. A Certified Public Accountant, Burr’s professional background
prior to joining the Kohl Organization, focused on taxation and investments with Arthur
Andersen in Milwaukee. He is a member of the Board of the Milwaukee Chapter of Financial
Executives International.
Burr and his wife, Julie, reside in Whitefish Bay with their three children, Matthew (2/1/87) a junior
a sixth grader at Holy Family School in Whitefish Bay. Most of his spare time is spent with his family, including participating in soccer or
and basketball tournaments and games. He is also an active member and volunteer at Holy Family Parish in Whitefish Bay.

TERRY PORTER — HEAD COACH
Milwaukee native Terry Porter was hired as the Head Coach of the Milwaukee
Bucks on August 6, 2003. He is the eighth head coach in franchise history.
“We couldn’t be more excited to introduce Terry Porter as our head coach,”
General Manager Larry Harris said at the press conference announcing the Bucks
new Head Coach. “During the interview process, Terry’s knowledge of the game, his
positive energy and his ability to communicate made it very evident that he was the
right choice to lead this young team. He is a proven winner in the NBA who played
the game with dignity, confidence and intensity, skills that will translate directly to the
improvement of our team.”
Porter spent the 2002-03 season as an assistant coach with the Sacramento
Kings, his first season in coaching after a distinguished 17-year NBA playing career
with Portland, Minnesota, Miami and San Antonio. Porter’s teams compiled a
remarkable record of 815-547 (.598) during his career, and only once failed to make
the postseason.
In 1,274 career games, Porter averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 assists and 1.24 steals
during a stellar career that included two All-Star berths (1991, 1993), two trips to the NBA Finals (1990, 1992) and
15,586 career points. He is 10th on the NBA’s all-time assist list (7,160).
Porter has played for five of the top 36 coaches (games won) in NBA history: Pat Riley (1,110), Jack Ramsay (864),
Rick Adelman (603), Gregg Popovich (339) and Flip Saunders (328).
In 1985, the Portland Trail Blazers selected Porter with the 24th overall pick in the NBA Draft. During his decadelong
tenure in Portland, Porter helped lead the Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals twice and continues to hold the NBA
Finals single-game record for the most free throws made, none missed – 15 (June 7, 1990 at Detroit). He was the
recipient of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1993, and remains as the Trail Blazers all-time assists leader
with 5,319.
Porter signed as a free agent with the Minnesota Timberwolves prior to the 1995-96 season and helped the
Wolves achieve their first-ever playoff berth in 1996-97 and their first winning season the following year.
He signed with the Miami Heat before the 1998-99 campaign, and signed with the Spurs prior to the 1999-2000
season. He retired after the 2001-02 season with the rare distinction of having never been traded during his NBA
career.
Prior to excelling on the NBA’s national stage,
Porter was no secret to basketball fans in
Wisconsin. He played prep basketball at
Milwaukee’s South Division High School, and was
a standout collegian at the University of Wisconsin-
Stevens Point under Dick Bennett.
In four seasons at Stevens Point, Porter averaged
13.5 points and shot an astounding 58.9 percent
from the field. Twice with the Pointers, as both
a junior and a senior, he was named an NAIA First-
Team All-American. He holds a degree in
Communications and was honored with a
Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999.
Throughout his career, Porter has been active
with the Boys and Girls Club and is a member of
the organization’s Hall of Fame. In 1994, he created
the Milwaukee Scholars Fund, which provides
scholarships to minority students in Milwaukee to
attend schools in the University of Wisconsin system.
Porter, the youngest of six children, is an avid
golfer. He and his wife, Susie, have three children:
Brianna, Franklin
BANGO
Bango was a phrase coined by Eddie Doucette, the original “Voice of the Bucks.” When the club held a contest to
name their new mascot, a few thousand entries were received. The most popular of which was Bango. Sherry
Kussman of New Berlin, Wisconsin won a drawing among seven people who submitted the Bango name. For her
entry, Sherry won a pair of season tickets.
With the name in place, on October 18, 1977, Bango was born. The date signified the home opener of the 1977-
78 season for the Bucks. The game pitted Milwaukee against the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-led Los Angeles Lakers
in the Milwaukee Arena.
