Assistant Coach
BASKETBALL STAFF
Andy Greer comes to Houston after two seasons as an assistant coach with
the New York Knicks. Greer will spearhead Houston’s advance scouting
operation, observing the Rockets upcoming opponents.
“Andy plays a role critical to our success, as he prepares the scouting report
for each game,” Rockets Head Coach Jeff Van Gundy said. “His knowledge
and dedication give us the ultimate advantage, and our team reaps the
benefits from his tireless work on the road.”
In addition to his experience with the Knicks, Greer has coached at the
collegiate level for nearly two decades. Prior to joining the Knicks, he
spent four years at Northern Illinois University. While at Northern Illinois, he spent three-and-a-half
seasons as an assistant coach and a half season as the team’s interim head coach.
Greer received his first head coaching position in 1993, when he became the United States Merchant
Marine Academy’s head coach and assistant director of athletics. In Andy’s third season at the helm,
the Mariners recorded their first winning season in six years and advanced to the ECAC Metro NY/NJ
Championship Game. The following year, they posted a 19-7 record and qualified for the NCAA
Division III Tournament. From 1994 through 1997, Greer also served as the director of the Knicks
Summer Basketball Camp.
Greer began his coaching career on the collegiate level, recording a series of stints as an assistant
coach. His first coaching job came in 1983 at Genesee Community College, as he assisted Jeff Van
Gundy’s father, Bill. Greer moved on after two seasons at Genesee, working for two years each at
Mansfield University and Brandeis University. He left Brandeis and spent one season as an assistant
coach at Boston University, where he aided Mike Jarvis. Greer then coached for three seasons under
George Raveling at the University of Southern California. During Greer’s stay at USC, the Trojans
registered three consecutive winning seasons, two NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT berth.
Greer holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from SUNY-Brockport, where he was
a teammate of Jeff Van Gundy, and a master’s in Education from Mansfield.
Greer and his wife, Lesley, live in Boston with their son, Zachary, and two daughters, Haley and Blake.
His younger brother, Larry, is an assistant coach at Wright State University.
