WELCOME to everyone, especially our guests.
Your presence is important to us.
St. Paul’s is an evangelical Christian
congregation, embracing historic Christian
teaching on all doctrines, centered on Jesus
Christ. Our desire is to bring the Gospel both
to those who are searching for answers to the
meaning of life and to those who desire a
closer relationship with God. We here at St.
Paul's have chosen to align ourselves with the
teachings of the Lutheran Reformation, due
to the clarity with which these help us to see
the true meaning of God's Word.
Specifically, St. Paul's is a ministry of the
Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod, one of
America's truly biblical churches!
• Members and guests: please fill out an
attendance card and place it in the
offering plate to indicate your presence
today. For Holy Communion, please read
our confession and indicate your
agreement with our beliefs by checking
the box next to the names of those
communing.
• Those sharing our beliefs, especially from
parishes in fellowship with us, are
welcome to receive.
• If you desire Holy Communion but hold a
confession differing from that of this
congregation, please speak with a Pastor
or an Elder.
• Non-communing, baptized children are
welcome to come to the table for a
blessing.
Please note: Half the inner circle of individual
glasses in each tray contains water with one
drop of communion wine for those hesitant to
drink larger amounts of wine. Those glasses
with wine are rose in color.
MEET-AND-GREET WITH PASTOR O’DONNELL
As Pastor O'Donnell continues his deliberations for accepting his Divine Call from St. Paul’s, at his
request, the Board of Elders would like to schedule an informal ‘meet and greet" with him, his
family and the congregation on Sunday, August 12, at 3:00 pm, at Roosevelt Park during
Oconomowoc Days. We plan to gather near the corner of Forest Street and Main Street, near the
left field fence of the baseball diamond. This informal get together will allow him the opportunity to
meet more members of St. Pauls and for him to get a better feel for the wonderful community that
God has given us.
Children’s Nutrition and Care-Vietnam
$72,255
Less than 10% of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is Christian and the government is
traditionally closed to outside religious organizations. LCMS World Mission personnel
have been in Vietnam since 1995 and work jointly with the Vietnamese National Institute
of Nutrition and also teach management, farming, fishing, food preparation and
food storage skills. Because of their valued history in education they are also reaching
out to the people through education ministries at the new international school. The staff
has been able to develop relationships with teachers and children and through this grant
share the love of Jesus with humanitarian care and education projects.
STEPHEN MINISTRY - CAN YOU HEAR JESUS’ WORDS OF COMFORT?
In Mathew 11:28-30, Jesus tells his followers, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is
light.”
• Do you feel weary?
• Does the yoke of life seem too difficult for you to carry alone?
• Are your burdens too much to bear?
God has called some people within our midst to Stephen Ministry. These people are trained and
supported in walking with others through difficult times in their lives.
Could you benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister?
TIME TIME TO TO TO GROW GROW GROW - ADULT BIBLE STUDIES
Session I - September 5 th , 12 th , 19 th , 26 th , October 3 rd , 10 th , 17 th , 24 th , 31 st and
November 7 th & 14 th
Every Christian can benefit from continued study in God’s Word. Time to Grow is our offering of
classes on Wednesday nights for the whole family. Through Bible study, the Holy Spirit works to
build up our faith as we continue to grow and understand God’s Holy Word. We have a meal
available in the fellowship hall starting at 5:00 pm and it’s served until 6:00 pm. The cost is adults
$4.00, 5-12 is $3.00 and 4 and under are free. At 6:00 pm we gather in the church for a time of
devotion and singing before we are dismissed to our classes at 6:20 pm. The children then go to
their own age-appropriate classrooms to study the Bible through story, crafts, games and music.
The adults have a variety of classes they can choose from at the same time. Our evening ends at
7:20 pm. There is a nursery available for children under 3.
SIGN-UP SHEET CAN BE FOUND ON THE INSERT PAGE IN THE BULLETIN.
The Armor of God
Led by Sarah Esveldt ~ Teachers’ Lounge [Room #214]
Did you know that you are in a battle right now while you are reading these words? It may not
seem that way, but God tells us we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces
in our lives every day. We are in a war with Satan and his army, but God does not send us out
without armor. We are more than equipped to handle the enemy. Based on the words of
Ephesians 6:10-20, this study will help you understand the different parts of your armor and how
they play a role in the battle against Satan.
New Member Class
Led by Steve Scharnell ~ Room #206
This class is for those who are interested in becoming a member of St. Paul’s... OR those looking for
a refresher course on Lutheran Doctrine.
Apologetics
Led by Mark Newman (religion teacher at LCLHS) ~ Room #205
1 Peter 3:15 - "Always be prepared to give a reason for the hope that is in you."
Some topics we will dissect this fall:
What is Truth? Does God exist? What about evolution? What about other worldviews? If God
exists, why is there evil? Can the Bible really be trusted? Is Jesus really God? Did Jesus really rise
from the dead?
8
(continued)

A Series of Firsts: A Study of Genesis 1-11
Led by Pastor Paul Borgman ~ Room #204
Genesis 1-11 is controversial in many ways. It is "a series of firsts": the first people, the first sin,
the first murder, the first flood. In these chapters, God will set the stage for the drama we call
history. It helps us to understand who we are, why we are here, and where we are going. Think
about it: that's a mighty big order!
Gifts of the Spirit
Led by Pastor Steve and Cathie Geske ~ Room #201
What is a spiritual gift? How can I know for sure which of these gifts God has entrusted to me to
use? I know I have a certain gift, but how can it be used in God's kingdom? Have any of these
questions ever crossed your mind? If so, you may be interested in our class on spiritual gifts. We
will traverse through the scriptures and look at the gifts God gives his people and how these gifts
can be used in His church. Some of the gifts we will discuss: administration, evangelism,
intercessory prayer, miracles, teaching, prophecy, tongues, wisdom and more. Come and learn
what great gifts God has given you and how you can use them to His Glory!
United In Christ Program
Led by Wendy Petersen ~ Room #219
Who’s invited?
All families with kindergarten students
(Your children do not have to go to St. Paul’s School in order to participate.)
Why come?
Adult time!
Enjoy a nice homemade dinner with your family with no preparation & clean-up hassle.
Have fun getting to know other families at St Paul’s with kids the same age as your own.
What will we do?
5:00 Dinner and activity in Room 219 for families. This program runs in conjunction with Time
To Grow. The meal will be provided by members of the church. The cost is $4 per adult and
$3 per child. Children 4 and under are free.
6:00 Opening in the church with all the other families
6:20 Kids go to their perspective classes or the nursery for a structured adult-led Bible class.
Adults go back to Room 219 and talk about topics suggested by group members . There
will be a facilitator, but not a leader. So, come with topics you’d like to discuss:)
Hope to see you on September 5 th !
RSVP to Wendy Petersen at 414-719-2171 or email: wnpetersen@gmail.com.
11 th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
1 Kings 19:1-8
Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done
and how he had killed all the prophets with the
sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say,
"May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,
if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like
that of one of them." Elijah was afraid and ran for
his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he
left his servant there, while he himself went a day's
journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree,
sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I
have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I
am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down
under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel
touched him and said, "Get up and eat." He looked
around, and there by his head was a cake of bread
baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and
drank and then lay down again. The angel of the
LORD came back a second time and touched him
and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too
much for you." So he got up and ate and drank.
Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days
and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the
mountain of God.
Ephesians 4:32-5:2
Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave
you. Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved
children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us
and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and
sacrifice to God.
St. John 6:35-51
Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who
comes to me will never go hungry, and he who
believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told
you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and
whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I
have come down from heaven not to do my will but
to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the
will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all
that he has given me, but raise them up at the last
day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks
to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal
life, and I will raise him up at the last day." At this
the Jews began to grumble about him because he
said, "I am the bread that came down from
heaven." They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of
Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How
can he now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"
"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus
answered. "No one can come to me unless the
Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him
up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets:
'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who
listens to the Father and learns from him comes to
me. No one has seen the Father except the one
who is from God; only he has seen the Father. I tell
you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I
am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate the
manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the
bread that comes down from heaven, which a man
may eat and not die. I am the living bread that
came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this
bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh,
which I will give for the life of the world."
