COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS SECTION 5.7 Extension Center Student Procedures ∗Coordinate with the D.Miss. Director in order to take your examinations. You must: 1. Include in your request the name and of your mentor/chair for the Specialization question. 2. Submit your proposal (from the Research Design course) and bibliography for your mentor to construct a Specialization question. 3. Select a proctor and submit his or her email address. 4. Request a date to start the comprehensive exam. 5. The program director will send you updated bibliographies from the appropriate professors. Upon reception of the above information, the director will send your proctor the seven questions via email or Blackboard. You will have three weeks from the time the director sends you the questions to complete the exams, at two hours per question. Help of any kind (books, notes, articles, computer files, etc.) is not permitted while taking the exams. Once finished, immediately email the director your completed exams. Guidelines and Bibliography for Anthropological Theory A. Guidelines Your objective in preparing for the exam is two-fold. First, to become familiar with the major theories and theoreticians within anthropological inquiry, including the following: Early Anthropologists: The Evolutionists: Herbert Spencer, Lewis Henry Morgan, Edward Tylor Founding Anthropologists: The Historical Particularists: Franz Boas, Margaret Mead The Socio-Linguists: Edward Sapir, Benjamin Lee Whorf The Personality and Culturalists: Ruth Benedict The Structuralists: French Structuralism: Emile Durkheim Functionalism: Bronislaw Malinowski Social Structuralism: Radcliffe-Brown, Mary Douglas, Symbolic Anthropology: Evans-Pritchard, Levi-Strauss, Victor Turner Cultural Ecologists/Materialists: Marshall Sahlins, Marvin Harris Interpretive Anthropology: Thick Description: Clifford Geertz World View Studies: Kearney, Redfield Culture Conflict and Change: Eric Wolf, Homer Barnett Second, you will be expected to be familiar with the major missiological anthropologists and be able to describe the manner in which any of the above theories or theoreticians has contributed to or influenced their writings. The major missiological anthropologists that you should know include Sherwood Lingenfelter, Charles Kraft, Paul Hiebert, Louis Luzbetak, Marvin Mayers, Dan Shaw, and Donald Smith. In addition to the following books that you can read in preparation for this assignment, note the bibliographic citations that they use to support their perspectives and the major theoreticians from whom they draw their inspiration.
