D.MISS. COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS SECTION 5.7
D.MISS. COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS
All students must pass the comprehensive exams before beginning dissertation writing. The
content of the examinations is drawn primarily from core courses, individual student research and a
core bibliography of resources that should be mastered by all D.Miss. students. The content of these
examinations is based upon the core course requirements and a comprehensive bibliography covering
all areas of missiology. Each student is responsible for all materials on the comprehensive
bibliographies and core courses covered in the D.Miss. program. Check with the program director for
updated bibliographies.
The questions on the exams are integrative in nature rather than testing recitation of specific
knowledge of a particular course. Sample questions are available, which will assist you in preparing
for the comprehensive exams. These may help you think about how to integrate your reading materials
around specific issues germane to the subjects under examination. When preparing for the D.Miss.
comprehensives keep the following questions in mind:
1. What is the history of the topic under discussion?
2. How has the topic evolved over time?
3. Who are the major proponents (cite)?
• What theories drive their conclusions?
• What contributions did they make?
4. Who are the major opponents (cite)?
• What theories drive their conclusions?
• What contributions did they make?
5. How do you view this topic?
All students will take seven comprehensive exams, at two hours for each. These include:
Part One
1) Anthropological Theory 2) Spiritual Warfare 3) Leadership & Followership 4) Church Planting or
Church Growth or Translation.
Part Two
5) History of Mission 6) Crosscultural Education or Narrative 7) Dissertation Area of Specialization
(question provided by mentor upon reception of proposal submitted through Research Design (see
below).
Students will submit a proposal from the Research Design course that includes a weighty bibliography.
