Red Letter Days
During the home campmeeting in October, 1898, the anointings with the Holy Spirit, and the tides
of blessing and victory were at times very marvelous. The 6th of October was a red-letter day in the
experience of many souls. As the people were engaged in prayer, there came upon them such a spirit
of prayer that many began to pour out their hearts to God in all parts of the house, and there rolled
over the assemblage such tides of glory and power that several lost their strength. Little was done
during the rest of the service but to wait and praise, while such a sacred wave and heavenly glory
filled the place as to be beyond all power of portrayal.
October 23d of the same year was another day of Pentecostal glory, and the waves of divine life
and love which flowed over and through God's people, were a real fulfillment of the promise, "I will
pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it."
Easter Sunday, 1899, was a glorious day. The congregations were large, and resurrection power
was in the midst. The Easter song by Miss Clemmie Gay, and the song 'Sighting the Golden Gate,'
by Brother Ledford, were both full of unction and the Spirit, and brought tears to many eyes and
shouts of victory to many lips. Dr. Bresee preached mightily, and salvation flowed like a river.
On July 4, 1899, there was a great all-day meeting. In the afternoon, during a general testimony
service, as persons from other localities, a number of Christian veterans, and some new converts,
were called upon to testify, the people could no longer be restrained from rising and proclaiming the
power of the blood. A scene ensued which it is impossible to describe. The Holy Ghost fell upon the
people in Pentecostal fashion, and probably fifty persons were on their feet at once praising God. The
old patriarchs, with streaming eyes, rushed into each other's arms, giving glory to Jesus, the young
converts waved their palms of victory, many shouted, and all gave themselves up to the mighty tide
of glory and power. Two souls were marvelously sanctified to God.
September 3, 1899, was a notable day at the First church, which was crowded with glad
worshipers. Dr. Bresee preached morning and night, and Rev. W. E. Shepard in the afternoon. Nine
were baptized, eight persons sought pardon or purity, and six were received into the church, in
addition to eight who had come in during the preceding week. The waves of power and blessing
which swept over the congregation were most glorious. People wept and shouted in holy triumph,
and salvation flowed in mighty tides. Many testified that it was the best day of their lives, and Dr.
Bresee expressed the opinion that it was the best day the church had ever seen.
The home campmeeting in 1899, closed on the last Sabbath of October, and it was the last and
greatest day of the feast. In the morning more people were crowded within the tabernacle than ever
before, and at night many were unable to get in. The streets seemed filled with people who desired
entrance. Dr. Bresee, before preaching in the morning, briefly reviewed the history of the Church of
the Nazarene, and stated that during the four years of its life, 916 persons had been received into its
membership in Southern California, exclusive of Redlands. Among other things he said: "Many who
are at a distance, turn their faces with prayer and love toward this place, and those who have gone
up on high love it with such an intensity that, if it be the will of God, they will hover over this scene
today, unperceived amid the throng, and join in the joy and victory of this hour." He preached from
