Notable Sabbaths At The First Church
On Easter Sunday, 1898, there were great congregations, mighty outpourings of the Holy Spirit,
and many souls saved and sanctified. Dr. Bresee said that he never realized more the resurrection
power of the Lord.
Sunday, May 29, 1898, and the following Monday were devoted to the celebration of the
anniversary of the Pentecost. The services on the Sabbath were peculiarly precious, and the
outpouring of the Spirit in the morning was so blessed that songs of praise and shouts of victory
burst out in the midst of the preaching of the Word, in such a way as to make it at times impossible
for Dr. Bresee to go on with his sermon. The all-day meeting on Monday, which was really a
continuation of the Sabbath services, was a scene never to be forgotten. At times the waves of glory
were such that amid the shouting and singing and dancing one could easily recognize what it was
that made the outside world think that the disciples were drunk. Seekers got into the fountain of
cleansing and souls were converted. In reporting this occasion, Dr. Bresee said: "We rejoice that we
live in the abiding Pentecost; that there is more to follow; that the infinite ocean never runs dry; that
the waters of divine love and power grow deeper and wider, and to our taste become sweeter and
more all-absorbing."
During the Sabbath services in August, 1898, there were very large congregations, the place was
filled with the presence and power of God; the anointing on the saints so thrilled their souls that they
shouted with gladness; and there were many precious trophies of the Savior's dying love and
resurrection power. Dr. Bresee said that these rescued ones were stars in the Redeemer's diadem, and
harbingers of further triumphs, for, though the uplook was always good, and God's promises were
continually filling the heavens with light, a succession of victories brought them down where more
eyes could see them, and so he prayed and looked for still greater tides of salvation.
Of the September services Dr. Bresee was able to truth fully say: "The meetings have seemed to
have a depth and sweetness which we have not before experienced. Fresh oil has been poured upon
the heads and hearts of believers. Exceeding great joy has been the experience of many. Shouts of
victory have been heard in almost every meeting, and sometimes the waves have rolled very high.
Souls have also found the way of life, and there has been joy among the angels of God, as well as
among the blood-washed company down here."
