will be promptly attended to. The editors receive no compensation for their time and labor. It is for
the Lord.
Brethren, Sisters, subscribe promptly."
In the issue of October, 1898, the following appears: "Heretofore we have published The
Nazarene, first to the subscribers, and then for gratuitous distribution, as a method of advertising the
work, and as a tract, using it as a means of securing the attendance of those who otherwise might not
know of our church and work, and are not attendants upon church services anywhere. From
henceforth it will be published for the subscribers. We have enlarged the amount of matter, and
generally improved the paper. The subscription price will still be fifty cents a year. Those subscribing
now will get the paper the rest of this year and next year at the same rate. We hope just as many of
our friends as possible will subscribe for the paper. And those who are now subscribers will renew
their subscriptions, and that those who have not paid for the current year will do so. The paper needs
the money from each subscriber. Most have paid, but some have not. Let our friends roll up a
magnificent list for next year. Not only take it yourself, but get others to do so. Subscriptions need
not necessarily be paid in advance. The paper will need money all through the year."
The Nazarene Messenger
It was not until the year 1900 that the name of the paper was changed from "The Nazarene," to
"The Nazarene Messenger," which title it retained until after the General Assembly, which met in
1911, when it was consolidated with the HERALD OF HOLINESS, and ceased to exist under its
former name.
Dr. Bresee As An Editor
During the nearly fourteen years which elapsed from the beginning of the publication of "The
Nazarene," until the inauguration of the "Herald of Holiness," Dr. Bresee did a prodigious amount
of editorial work. Although most of this labor was done under pressure, many of the articles written
---by Dr. Bresee are religious classics, which, if properly gathered together and classified, would
make several extremely valuable and interesting volumes.
Much of the data contained in the following pages has been collated from the files of "The
Nazarene Messenger," which at first from month to month, and later from week to week, faithfully
recorded the progress of the work in the parent church, the rapid extension of the movement; the
incoming of new workers; the triumphant death of many of the older members of the church; the
great evangelistic services which are held from time to time; the missionary activities of the church;
the organization of new churches in different parts of the country; the establishment of a Bible
College, which later became the Nazarene University; the various Assemblies which were held from
year to year; the articles of faith adopted by the young church; the journeys undertaken by Dr. Bresee
in the upbuilding and extension of the work; and finally the mighty tides of spiritual power, glory,
and salvation which rolled on year after year, sweeping many thousands of souls into the kingdom
of God, and the cleansing fountain of Jesus' blood.
