and some of them wrote to him at the Conference, saying that, if he intended to make that the
criterion of his future action, he had better lower the standard of his preaching. Both the Bishop and
the Presiding Elder proposed his return for a fifth year, contingent upon his consent, but he declined.
He left a large and flourishing church, as intensely spiritual and triumphant as any of which he had
ever been pastor.
