Phineas F. Bresee
A PRINCE IN ISRAEL
By E. A. Girvin
APPENDIX
Expressions of esteem by the First Methodist Episcopal Church, of Los Angeles, California:
At the meeting of the last Quarterly Conference, held at the Fort Street Methodist Episcopal
church, September 13, 1886, the following resolutions were read and unanimously adopted by the
Conference:
WHEREAS, The polity of the church demands at this time the removal of our pastor, Rev. P. F.
Bresee, D. D., it becomes our pleasurable duty to give, to some extent, expressions to our
appreciation of his work and worth. Three years ago he came to us a stranger having left the fruits
of an average lifetime behind him. Under circumstances of peculiar difficulty, with a cosmopolitan
membership numerous and widely distributed, he at once mastered the situation and took position
in the front rank of the clergy of Southern California. By an unusual combination of the factors
essential to the successful teacher and pastor, he has during his administration won the affection of
our whole people and of a wide circle beyond, while he has commanded the respect and confidence
of the entire community. With a rare ability for the management of details, the prosperity of the
varied interests of the church has been steadily progressive under his direction, so that our Sunday
school, class meetings, prayermeetings, local an d general benevolences, measure up to the standard
of a high type of Methodism. Therefore, be it
Resolved, (1) That his ministry among us has been characterized by a noble, self-sacrificing
service.
(2) That he has been bold in the proclamation of the truth and fearless in the denunciation of evil.
(3) That he has been tender and devoted in his ministrations to the bereaved, the suffering, and
the dying.
(4) That in all his work we have found him a man of tireless energy, with a resistless purpose to
please God and help his fellowmen.
( 5 ) That while the church has been built up by his effective preaching, it has been established
by his equally effective pastoral care, and the exalted example of a holy life.
Resolved, That in Mrs. Bresee we have found a model preacher's wife, who, by her lively interest
in every department of the church and by a hearty co-operation with her husband in all possible ways
has added largely to his efficiency.
