Dr. Haynes said:
The session has been one of intense interest, and we believe will eventuate in great blessing and
profit to the church at large. There was a very full attendance, and nearly all the delegates remained
faithfully to the close. The spirit of the body was very good. There was much very earnest debating,
but no unbrotherliness, or rancor or acrimony. God was manifestly with the evangelistic services
throughout the Assembly. The Spirit was in the Word from night to night, and put His seal to the
salvation and sanctification of many souls.
It was my privilege to see much of Dr. Bresee during the twenty-nine days that elapsed between
his return from the General Assembly, and his passing away.
Tribute To His Wife
I was permitted to spend forty minutes with him and Sister Bresee on the evening of Saturday,
November 6th. He was sitting on the edge of his bed, seeking in this way to breathe with greater ease
than he could do in a recumbent position. I spoke of the marvelous manner in which the dear Lord
had blessed him during the nearly sixty years of his ministry. He did not reply directly, but, as he
turned on his right side, he said: "The greatest blessing I have ever had is my wife." Sister Bresee
gently demurred to this, but I heartily agreed with Dr. Bresee, who then said substantially as follows:
"Position is nothing; reputation little. True godliness is the only thing which has any value."
Last Days
I last saw him for just a moment on Sunday evening, November 7th, and told him that I was going
to the 6 o'clock upper room prayermeeting at the First Church. He said: "Tell them all that I love
them, and that I pray that the glory of God may come upon them, and that they may have victory
through the precious blood of Jesus." He was sitting on the edge of the bed, and I shook hands with
him and said good-by, not knowing that it was the last time on this side of the eastern gate.
A Touching Scene
On Thursday evening, November 4th, he sent for all his children, as he felt that his end was very
near. First he spoke to his four sons -- Ernest, Phineas, Paul, and Melvin -- and then called for his
two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Parker, and Miss Sue Bresee, and his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Paul Bresee,
whom he loved as a daughter. As they all knelt around him, with his faithful wife among them, he
prayed for them and all the absent members of his family, mentioning each by name, and
commending them to the mercy of God. He thanked the Lord for the great love and kindness of his
children to him, and besought the Savior to bring them all to heaven. As he prayed in a way which
Sister Bresee characterized as wonderful, and something that would be indelibly impressed upon the
memories of every one present, the tears rolled down his cheeks, and were wiped away by his eldest
son, Ernest.
During these long and weary days of suffering, he said many sweet and precious things to Sister
Bresee. He frequently rallied, and spoke at different times to quite a number of the brethren, among
