We hope and pray that Phineas F. Bresee,
And she who all his joys and woes has shared,
May linger with us long; that they may be
For many years to church and children spared.
God grant that they may yet with joy behold

On Sunday morning, February 11, 1912, Dr. Bresee gave the message in the First Church, at Los
Angeles, his theme being "Thou Hast Well Seen," Jeremiah 1:12. The following is the writer's report
of the sermon in metrical form:
What was it that the prophet saw,
When God declared, "Thou hast well seen"?
Was it the old Mosaic law,
Designed to make God's people clean?
Or was it visions of the glory
Set forth in sacred song and story?
Did Jeremiah really see
The mighty truths of saving grace,
Embodied in an almond tree?
And could he from this vision trace
In Christ the river of salvation,
Which reaches every tribe and nation?
Ah! yes, for God had poured the light
Upon him; he could understand.
What was it that thus gave him sight?
The fingers of the wounded hand,
So gentle, and withal possessing
Such power in the way of blessing.
He saw the budding of the rod,
Betokening Jehovah's choice;
While rebels fell before the God
Who made His people to rejoice.
He saw within the place most holy,
A man whose mein was meek and lowly.
