Girvin CHAPTER 42 Eighteen Districts -- Christmas -- Progress of the Movement -- Communion With Nature -- His Presence a Benediction -- The Nazarene University -- An Extended Trip -- Among the Hills -- In Our Childhood -- A Memorable Day -- Great Events -- Tides of Glory Eighteen Districts The close of the year 1908 found the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene with eighteen Districts, and the following District Superintendents. H. D. Brown, R. M. Guy, C. B. Jernigan, E. Dearn, H. H. Sumlin, H. W. Hoople, A. B. Riggs, C. A. Bromley, H. B. Hosley, A. M. Bowes, J. D. Scott, W. F. Dallas, J. H. Norris, T. H. Agnew, J. W. Goodwin, H. G. Trumbauer, P. G. Linaweaver, and W. E. Fisher. There were from 250 to 300 churches, with a total membership approximating 11,000. The educational interests of the church were represented chiefly by the Texas Holiness University, the Deets Pacific Bible College, and the Pentecostal Collegiate Institute. The missionary activities of the church extended throughout many heathen countries. Three publishing houses were actively engaged in promulgating holiness doctrines and literature, and pushing the work of the church in every possible way. Christmas On December 4,1908, speaking of Christmas, Dr. Bresee said: "'Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace.' Hail the day that saw His birth. With joy we welcome the day we celebrate as its anniversary. His coming thrilled the universe of angelic life with a new song. " 'Quick through the vast expanse it flew, And loud the echo rolled; The theme, the song, the joy, was new-- 'Twas more than heaven could hold.' "The joy of that coming fills the earth more and more. The chorus of that song of good will and peace and glory to God in the highest, finds echo in innumerable hearts. Through His coming, the company around the great white throne is such as no man can number, and a vast company on earth walk with Him in white. "No fairy story so affects childhood as these marvelous realistic tales of the angels and heaven-born song, the glorious light on Bethlehem's valleys, the finding of Him with Mary, His mother and Joseph, the star guiding the wise men and their worship, with offerings of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. No other facts so affect the most thoughtful as these spectacular things, reinforced by the virgin birth, the preceding prophetic utterances, the succeeding revelations of His personality in His life, death, and resurrection, and the effects produced upon the race. With joy we hasten to celebrate His day, and worship at the feet of Him 'who has lifted the gates of empires from their hinges, and turned the stream of human history out of its course,' and who is giving us a new earth by bringing down into it the New Jerusalem. "Wait! We shall see it all later. Water will blush and turn to wine; waves will cease their commotion and make a rocking cradle for tempests. Funeral processions will stop at His command, and the house of sorrow will be rehabilitated with the voices of love." Progress Of The Movement During the first half of the year 1909, Dr. Edward F. Walker became one of the pastors of the First Church, in Los Angeles, Dr. Bresee remaining the senior pastor of the church. In the months of May and June, Dr. Bresee presided over the District Assemblies of the San Francisco and Southern California Districts. These Assemblies, as well as those held in other parts of the country, showed a constant advance, and manifested the conquering spirit and trend of the movement. In August, Rev. W. W. Danner, for many years an honored member and officer of the Iowa Holiness Association, and an able preacher, educator, and executive, accepted the position of dean of the Deets Pacific Bible College. Dr. Bresee was reelected president, and Dr. E. F. Walker became a member of the faculty. The following additional officers were also elected: Leslie F. Gay, vice president; Lily D. Bothwell, recording secretary; Fred C. Epperson, treasurer. The trustees besides the foregoing were: Rev. Isaiah Reid, Leora Maris, Martha L. Seymour, Rev. H. S. Johnson, C. E. McKee, Rev. John W. Goodwin, Andrew Adams, F. E. Crawford, Jackson Deets, Rev. W. C. Wilson, and Rev. E. A. Girvin. It was in August, 1909, that the first District campmeeting was held in Southern California. It was a time of great victory and salvation. Among those who preached were Dr. Bresee, Rev. W. W. Danner, Rev. H. J. Elliott, Rev. P. G. Linaweaver, and Brother Fred St. Clair, the well known evangelist. Communion With Nature Describing his journey across the continent in September, 1909, Dr. Bresee says: "The long trips across the continent never lose their exhilaration. To go anywhere as even the lowliest of His messengers, would be sufficient joy. Bishop Taylor used to say, 'The Lord does not need to give me a second invitation to go with Him to any country or any world.' In this trip, as in others, the mountains and deserts and clouds have been full of ministries of pleasure. I enjoy with peculiar pleasure the cloud formations. Nothing in art, and few things in nature excel in beauty their fantastic and often almost lifelike scenes. The deserts and mountains have each their own peculiar charms. The earth and skies are full of magnificence and beauty, which has been spread before us all. Incitements to worship seem to come from all things about us, but none can really worship in the beauty of holiness, but he who sees the riches of glory of divine love, as manifested on Calvary."
