of the platform, at the same time moving that Dr. Bresee, as the senior General Superintendent, be
given charge of the Assembly.
Rev. R. Pierce, and Rev. J. D. Scott were elected joint secretaries of the Assembly.
The report of Dr. Bresee was as follows:
Dear Brothers and Sisters: It is with me a matter of thanksgiving to God, that in His good
providence I am permitted at the end of the first year of our life as a united church, to render up to
you a brief account of my stewardship as your humble servant, acting as one of your General
Superintendents. Last year, as in the years preceding, in the narrower limits of the work, I undertook
to report in reference to the varied forms of organized activities within the church. But since the
blessed union accomplished a year ago, I have been permitted to co-operate with Rev. H. F.
Reynolds, we being by your election of us to this position, associated together in this General
Superintendency; and, the various agencies being in such position as to report directly to this body,
it is only necessary that I make some brief references to such personal services as I have been able
to render. Allow me to say that my relationship to my colleagues, and all of the brethren of the
ministry, has been a blessing and refreshment to my soul. Also that I have rejoiced in the precious
fellowship which I have been permitted to have with the churches in the different parts of the land.
Labors as Superintendent
That I have not been able to do more, and give more constant and undivided attention and service
to the church at large, has been my regret. It has been necessary for me to give some time and
strength to heavy pastoral services, by and through which my general service has been made
possible. I recognize that this is not the most desirable method, and that it gives more or less
opportunity to the enemy at both ends of the service, which might be impossible if the gates could
be more perfectly guarded and defended. If it shall be possible for you to find some one who can give
more full and better service in this office, it will be your duty to do so, and will be a relief and joy
to me. But I have been permitted, in addition to pastoral duties, and a large correspondence, and
some editorial and educational work, to make a brief visit to this Southland, in which I had the
privilege of visiting Peniel, Texas, and I hope doing for them some little service; at least, having with
them pleasant fellowship in the work; and then visiting the brethren here at Pilot Point, to plan with
them and somewhat arrange this larger union and enjoy with them some ministry of the Word. Then
I visited and labored a little at Indianapolis and Seymour, Ind.; Louisville, Ky.; Johnstown, Pa.; and
Washington, D. C., on my way to the District Assemblies of the East--all of which: Washington,
New York, New England, and Pittsburgh, had the pleasure of assisting in holding. All of these
Assemblies were remarkable for unity and holy fellowship. The blessing of God was greatly upon
them, great unction being upon the ministry of the Word, and even the business sessions at times
overwhelmed with the glory of the manifestation of the divine presence. Some of them were
peculiarly blessed with tides of salvation. I shall always thank God for the privileges of the sweet
fellowship and communion that I enjoyed in this my first visit and ministry among these dear
brethren and sisters.
