California. Some of them are very large, covering immense stretches of country, and the great
distances have made them difficult to care for. But our work has been scattered, and these large
Districts have been a necessity. Nevertheless, large and unwieldy as they have been, with our
efficient Superintendents and District Assemblies, they have been of incalculable service to the
work. In this, like all the other departments of the work, we are yet in the early morning, but the day
has dawned. The country must be covered with Districts, with able men at the head of them, and we
will soon be able to have a center of fire in every city in America, and will be able to enter foreign
fields in a way that will promise good and efficient work.
Missions
"Time emphasizes the fact that our first great mission field is this country. That God has called
us to help reinforce the religious forces of America, and thus help to save it from the paganism with
which it is so strongly threatened, and which the worldly churches are so powerless to resist. No
doubt but the reflex influence of this movement upon the older churches is good, and every church
that can be impelled, inspired, or provoked to deeper spirituality, is so much of an asset to this work.
But there is a very great need everywhere of this church--not narrow, nor partisan, nor sectarian but
in a spirit of love as broad as the gospel--to preach holiness, and organize the results of our ministry
for aggressive and continuous work. No mission work at this time is so essential for the redemption
of this world from sin, as the preaching and establishing of holiness in America. Every holiness
center established, is the springing forth from the skies of rivers of life to men. While in these days
the distinct ion between home and foreign missions has vanished, and the world is at our doors, yet
a wise, discerning eye will see that a new movement like this, must in order to efficiently serve the
whole, spend the greater force in creating the very largest possibilities. Whatever else we may be
able to do, we must possess this land, both for its own sake, as well as for the conditions of service
to every land. I fully believe, with the accelerated momentum given by our union of holiness forces,
that only a few years will be necessary to give to this work a thousand centers of holy flame in this
country, and that from them the streams will flow to the world. The reports of the missionary boards
will show some organized effort; though the great amount of the work has been done by the people
directly, preaching and testifying the gospel of the grace of God. Our work has been new, and with
but small aggregations of people and means, but I believe to a considerable extent the scattered
people have gone forth testifying to this great salvation."
The remainder of the report dealt largely with the organized mission work carried on heretofore
by the Church of the Nazarene; its publishing interests; and the great educational work represented
by the Deets Pacific Bible College. The report closed as follows:
Adjustments
"In coming into this union we find ourselves possessed of societies and corporate boards, brought
into being to carry out in each of our previous organizations, the same purposes, such as missions,
publishing interests, and education. It will be our work to so adjust these societies and boards, that
they may work in the best ways, cooperating and assisting each other until such times as it may be
found advisable to unify them.
