devotional service. H. H. B. Ciprico was elected secretary, and a roll of the members was prepared,
showing twenty-one members, a goodly number of whom were present.
"The General Superintendent addressed the Assembly, discussing some things vital to the interests
of the church, and reporting the work at large. The District Superintendent gave an interesting report
of the District. The preachers in charge, and other preachers present, reported their work, and the
characters of the preachers were passed.
"The Sunday school superintendents and delegates reported from the various charges, some of the
reports running into personal experiences of the abounding grace of God, which caused the hearts
of all to burn within them.
"The reports showed a good degree of prosperity, amid many difficulties and adverse conditions,
with marked evidences of the presence and blessing of the Lord, with Pentecostal anointings, and
overruling providences. They also showed the clear call of the workers to this work of organized
holiness, their heroic spirit, and that very substantial advance is being made in every way. Brother
Linaweaver is doing excellent service; notwithstanding that he is a pastor, he is giving much time
to the pushing of the work in other places.
"The recommendation of Brother C. B. Langdon for recognition of orders, was presented, and he
was recognized as an elder among us.
"Much regret was expressed at the necessary absence of Brother E. A. Girvin, who is in the East,
he being the first Nazarene in these parts, and having so firmly and efficiently stood for the work as
pastor at Berkeley, which church for so long stood almost alone for the work of the Church of the
Nazarene in this part of the state. He has earnestly sought its planting in the cities about the bay, and
his sowing is coming to harvest. Scarce any one else could have rejoiced as he in the first District
Assembly; but being absent, he will rejoice.
"There is a great field open to the church in this District --much land to be possessed. The planting
of organized holiness work, which must stand on its own feet, make its own provisions and provide
its own instrumentalities, is necessarily slow, but when once our feet are down, we can run and not
get weary. There is beginning to be felt the thrill of larger possible success.
"The workers go forth from this Assembly with new inspirations to win victory."
Dr. Bresee also spoke of the work in Berkeley and Alameda, saying, among other things: "Brother
Wiley has been secured as associate pastor in Berkeley. He is giving great satisfaction, and under his
earnest ministry the church is putting on further strength. We rejoice that so able and successful a
helper as Brother Wiley has been secured.
Alameda
"In Alameda we have a little band of heroic, devoted people. They have a nice little church, built
on leased ground; built by two devoted Nazarenes, Sister Plummer and Brother Folsom. Brother
