"At last the work is begun, and, if not in the way that was planned, it has--we trust in God's
way--been started. A hall has been rented and furnished on City Hall Square, which was opened with
a good audience on Friday night, July 14,1905. This was done largely through the agency of Brother
Girvin, especially assisted by Brother Linaweaver, and Brother and Sister Matthews. We had the
pleasure of being with them at five services, and seeing some souls come into the kingdom. The
arrangements are for Brother and Sister Hill to take charge of the work for a time. Let the saints pray
that it may be an open door to a blessed work."
Another Eastern Trip
A general convention was held at the Church of the Nazarene, in Chicago, between September
5th and 11th, 1905. It was attended by the members of the Church of the Nazarene, and other friends
of the work in Illinois and surrounding states. Dr. Bresee left Los Angeles on August 14th, stopping
a day at Topeka, Kas., holding a campmeeting at Lewiston, visiting Canton and Peoria, and
dedicating a church at Kewanee--the four last-named places all being in Illinois. We will let Dr.
Bresee describe this eventful journey in his own terse, vivid language:
A Meeting In Topeka
"Three nights and nearly three days lie between Los Angeles and Topeka. Going, going, going,
and this fair city is reached, and the smiling face and outstretched hand of Brother Mayberry bids me
welcome. Taking me directly to his beautiful and hospitable home, his good wife adding her
welcome also, makes me doubly welcome.
"By invitation the evening service was held in one of the Methodist churches, and the Wesleyan
church adjourned its midweek meeting and came. There were a goodly number of their members,
and four ministers of this church present--among whom was the Rev. G. B. Howard, who preached
once for the First Church in Los Angeles, greatly to their delight, a few years ago. He was for several
years president of the Kansas Conference. There was a good attendance, and an earnest, enthusiastic
meeting, with the manifest presence of the King in the midst."
Camp Meeting Near Lewiston
After leaving Topeka, Dr. Bresee proceeded to Lewiston, Fulton County, Illinois. The
campmeeting was in a beautiful grove, east of the town, and many friends of the movement were
present from Canton, Maples Mill, Dunfermline, and the country surrounding Lewiston. The
meeting lasted ten days, and the results were such as to cause the saints to rejoice. The last Sabbath,
especially, was a great day. There had been a spirit of cumulative faith and victory for two or three
days, and on Sunday morning at the love-feast, great blessings fell upon the people as they came
forward in lines to the altar, and one after another gave their triumphant testimonies. At each service
of the day the altar was partly filled with seekers, aggregating twenty-five during the day. Seven
united with the Church of the Nazarene. The Free Methodist brethren were especially helpful all
through the meeting. The Rev. W. B. Golden, the pastor of the Church of the Nazarene, had all the
arrangements well in hand, and made everybody feel at home.
