Northwest, and the battle pushed to victory. As of old, 'A great and effectual door is opened, and
there are many adversaries'; but faith sees only the door opened by God's hand, and knows only His
call to go forward."
At Tacoma
Dr. Bresee stopped at Tacoma. He said of his visit to this city: "We had the pleasure of meeting
Professor and Mrs. Grumbling, friends of other years. He has charge of the Department of Science
in the University of the Puget Sound, a Methodist institution. We were guests of the Rev. L. F.
Tuttle. who is much interested in the work of the Church of the Nazarene, and had come to Seattle
to meet us, and arrange for a meeting in Tacoma. He is supplying as pastor of one of the Methodist
churches here; but he is large and broad enough to be interested in and thankful for the real service
of God, wherever and by whomever carried on.
We had the privilege of preaching at night to a good audience, in a hall engaged for the purpose,
and of seeing several seek and enter into the blessing of full salvation. When the altar service was
over, they asked us to give them some account of the work of the Church of the Nazarene, and,
seating themselves, listened attentively for an hour, while I told them of the blessings and
providential leading and a little of the victory God has given. Some of them had known something
of the work, but seemed delighted to hear more about it. From the expressions of interest and desire,
it seemed as if it only needed a little time and proper presentation, to auspiciously open the work in
this city. Indeed, the hearts of many hungry people in every city turn anxiously toward it. May we
be able to meet the demands of the hour."
A Visit To Portland
Dr. Bresee gave the following interesting narrative of his visit to Portland: It is a little more than
half a day's ride through beautiful scenery and the crossing of great rivers, from Tacoma to Portland.
We were met at the depot by the Re. L. C. Elliott and Mrs. Whitesides, who had made arrangements
for our entertainment, and for the holding of meetings, though several friends had joined them in the
invitation to us to tarry, if possible, for a few days, and hold some meetings. We found it practicable
to stay but two nights, and had thus but three services, one in the afternoon. They were all well
attended, a good interest was manifest, and some seekers were at each service. The last night, by
special request, we spent the hour in telling them about the rise and progress of the work among us.
There seems to be a good opportunity for the establishment of the work here.
"Portland is Oregon's chief city, and seems to be rapidly growing, and developing in all those
things which make a great city. There are some large churches here, besides some smaller ones; some
missions, some fanaticism, together with all of those isms which are likely to be found in a western
city, especially along this coast, where things seem to flow as into a whirlpool, and, finding no
further outlet, go round and round.
"We were no sooner through our first meeting than we were accosted by a group of people, first
by way of questioning, and then assaulted by their notions, as to church organization, in which they
did not believe, and in reference to fine clothes and ornaments, and as to whether we believed in feet
