A Trip To The Northwest
Toward the end of November, 1904, Dr. Bresee. accompanied by Brother C. E. McKee, his
companion in so many journeys, started for Spokane, Washington. The following interesting report
of the trip was written by Dr. Bresee, and published in the Nazarene Messenger, of December 15th:
"From Tuesday night, November 29th, to the Saturday morning following, was taken in traveling
from Los Angeles to Spokane. At Sacramento, as it was Wednesday evening, we thought to look in
on one of the prayermeetings, and say 'Amen' with the gathered worshipers. Knowing only the
location of the Sixth Street Methodist Episcopal church, we went thither, and found that Rev. H. C.
Morrison and Rev. Joseph H. Smith had been holding a ten days' meeting, and that, while Brother
Morrison had preached his last sermon the night before, and left the city during the day, Brother
Smith was still there, and was to preach and hold the closing meeting of the series that night. We had
no sooner entered the church and slipped into a seat near the door, than we found Brother and Sister
Davis and their daughter, of the First Church of the Nazarene, of Los Angeles. They were in the seat
just in front of us, and were as much surprised to see us as we were to see them. Dr. Case, the pastor,
whom we have known in other days, coming back to where we were, did everything he could to
welcome us and help us to enjoy the service. Brother Smith preached from the 51st Psalm, and there
were several seekers at the altar.
"At Sacramento we spent the hours in conference with friends, mostly in reference to the ripeness
of the conditions for the Church of the Nazarene in that city. There seemed to be a deep feeling of
the need of a church, which would be out and out for full salvation, and at the same time free from
fanaticism and side issues. Capable and anointed leadership seemed to them the great desideratum.
We are to see them further on our return, and, if possible. hold a few days meetings with them.
"We overtook our dear Brother Kent here in Spokane. He had preceded us, and had been holding
meetings for some people for a week. On every hand there were good reports. He had edified and
helped the church, and souls had been daily added to the Lord.
"Brother McKee and myself joined the advancing hosts in the Saturday night service, which was
a blessed meeting, with salvation; and the Sabbath was a great day of victory and power. At the
services on Saturday night and during the Sabbath, some twenty-five seekers have been at the altar.
"The work here seems in a very satisfactory condition, and there are continued blessing and
salvation. The hall which our people use is surrounded by saloons, and is opposite the great Coeur
d' Alene Theater, where every night preceding the performance, pictures are thrown upon the walls
