"At night there was another great meeting, with preaching of the Word, and seeking the way of life. Monday being a holiday (Labor Day), an all-day meeting was held. I was present at the forenoon and afternoon services, which were seasons of much power and salvation. Brother C. W. Ruth was with us a day, and preached once with great power. He came from Indiana between his campmeetings, for this little time with us, which was greatly appreciated. Sister Johnson was also here much of the meeting, coming from Michigan; also Sister Croft, who is now resident in Chicago, and who will be for the time identified with the church here. "With prayers and adieus, I turn my face toward the Western sea."

F. C. Bingley, a converted Jew, and his estimable wife. Rev. L. A. Townsend, a minister of the Congregational church, preached several times, and united with the church. He was a brilliant man, who some time before was gloriously sanctified in his pulpit, and lay quite a while under the mighty power of God. Rev. E. A. Burlison and wife also enrolled their names; and Brother and Sister E. I. Ames, well known in California, for several years officers in the Salvation Army, and at that time residents of Chicago, also belonged to the happy company who were charter members of the Chicago church. One Methodist minister was sanctified in the meetings. He had attended regularly, and at last came to the altar. He prayed through to glorious victory, and went home to his own people and told them the wonderful things that God had done for him. He was about to be transferred to one of the Dakotas, and promised to be true and definite as to holiness. An elderly Presbyterian minister was also swept into the fountain of Jesus' blood. While Dr. Bresee was dwelling upon the inheritance to which we come, and quoting the words, "We are come unto the spirits of just men made perfect," as having reference to the perfection of justified men through the blood of Jesus by the baptism with the Holy Ghost, this Presbyterian minister asked how about Paul's declaration in the epistle to the Philippians that he was not perfect. When shown that the writer of the epistle spoke of resurrection perfection, immediately afterward proceeding to declare his present Christian perfection, the minister asked what John meant when he said: "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves." He was shown that this referred to any man who said he did not need sanctification after he had been converted, and after a few more questions, he came to the altar, and by faith entered into the promised inheritance. The Ninth Anniversary On Sunday, October 16, 1904, the ninth anniversary of the organization of the Church of the Nazarene, was observed at the First church, in Los Angeles. In the morning Brother and Sister Leslie F. Gay sang a song of triumph, after which Dr. Bresee spoke of the "Providential rise and work of the Church of the Nazarene." He called attention to the special preparation for this movement through the years which preceded it, to the circumstances that led necessarily to the withdrawal by himself and others from previous church relationship, and later, the organization of the church.
