The Bible College And University
I will necessarily devote considerable space to the University in subsequent chapters, but in this
connection, I deem it appropriate to give Dr. Bresee's own account of the origin and growth of that
institution.
"The need of special educational help for young men and women who were called specifically to
this work, became apparent. Men and women were coming from other churches and taking part in
the battle; but among the young people who were converted and brought into the church were those
whom God called into pastoral, missionary and evangelical work, and who needed further training
for efficient service. In the providence of God, some property was offered which would make the
beginning of a Bible College a possibility. Because of the many duties which already devolved upon
me, I was slow to take up this department of work. Encouraged, however, by Brother Ruth, the
matter was taken up and adjusted, and arrangements made for the opening of the school, which took
place in the autumn of 1902, thus preparing the way for the final incorporation of the institution
known as the Nazarene University and Deets Pacific Bible College. This school was carried on under
my general supervision, Miss Leora Maris being principal for several years. After a time it was found
necessary to add another department, and an academy was opened under the principalship of Miss
Cora Snyder. This was carried on until the latter part of 1910. Among those who taught in this school
up to that time were Rev. C. W. Ruth, Rev. Isaiah Reed, Rev. A. L. Whitcomb, Rev. C. V.
LaFontaine, Mrs. Alice P. Baldwin, Mrs. Lily D. Bothwell, Brother Leslie F. Gay, Miss Bessie
Wood, Mrs. Annie T. Armour, Rev. B. E. Sherwin, Rev. P. E. Ryland, Dr. F. A. Seymour, Miss E
J Kellogg, and Mrs. A. F. McReynolds.
"In 1909, Rev. W. W. Danner was called to be principal of the institution, and served for one year.
This school did excellent service, and turned out some young men and women who have made their
mark in Christian work in the church.
"It was during this period that Brother Jackson Deets, of Upland, became much interested in the
college, and felt that larger opportunities were a necessity to its growth; that we must have a place
for better and more commodious buildings. For this purpose he gave the institution $30,000, with
which a campus of about nine acres was bought. It was a beautiful location, between Los Angeles
and Hollywood. "Toward the latter part of 1908, a very serious matter occurred, which threatened
the life of the Bible College, and serious injury to the church. Through a misunderstanding, a schism
took place, which carried with it some of the teachers of the Bible College and many members of
the First church, who seceded from the church, and organized an independent mission. But through
the good providence of God, the church was sheltered from ultimate serious harm, and the matter
