The presumptuous person imagines he can do every thing, and can do
nothing; thinks he can excel all, and excels in nothing; promises every
thing, and performs nothing. The humble man acts quite a contrary part.
The wise and just God often, in the course of his providence, permits
great defects to be associated with great eminence, that he may hide pride
from man, and cause him to think soberly of himself and his
acquirements. "Let him that most assuredly standeth take heed lest he
fall!" and let him who is in honour bear himself meekly, lest God defile
his horn in the dust; for God grants his gifts, not that the creature, but that
himself, may be magnified.
