Whatcoat, without his "money, books, or clo<strong>the</strong>s." They passed over <strong>the</strong> mountains, down <strong>the</strong><br />

Holston River, into Tennessee, into <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>of</strong> <strong>Church</strong> River, where, reaching a "station" on <strong>the</strong><br />

outskirts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> settlements, <strong>the</strong>y combined with o<strong>the</strong>r travelers to form a company, and, on <strong>the</strong> 27th<br />

<strong>of</strong> September, 1800, began <strong>the</strong>ir course direct to Kentucky. Wearied and sick, <strong>the</strong>y reached Be<strong>the</strong>l<br />

Academy, Jessamine County, and <strong>the</strong>re held <strong>the</strong> Western Conference in <strong>the</strong> first week <strong>of</strong> October,<br />

<strong>the</strong> first session <strong>of</strong> that body <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re remains any correct record. Ten traveling preachers<br />

were present, including Asbury and Whatcoat; <strong>the</strong> session lasted but two days; two candidates were<br />

admitted on probation, one member located, fourteen local and four traveling preachers were<br />

ordained. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small body lingered long in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Church</strong>, but all have now gone<br />

to <strong>the</strong>ir rest.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> session Asbury, Whatcoat, and McKendree traveled and preached toge<strong>the</strong>r, from <strong>the</strong><br />

center <strong>of</strong> Kentucky to Nashville, in Tennessee, and <strong>the</strong>nce to Knoxville, where <strong>the</strong>y parted,<br />

McKendree returning to his great district, which comprised thirteen circuits, over which he went<br />

preaching night and day with an ardor befitting so grand a sphere, and such sublime results as he<br />

could justly anticipate for <strong>the</strong> rising commonwealths around him, whose moral foundations<br />

Methodism was now effectively laying. An extraordinary religious excitement spread over all <strong>the</strong><br />

country. It was largely attributable to <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> camp-meetings at this time -- a provision<br />

which, however questionable in dense communities, seemed providentially suited to <strong>the</strong>se sparsely<br />

settled regions. In <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> 1799, John and William Magee, who were bro<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> first a<br />

Methodist local preacher, <strong>the</strong> second a Presbyterian minister, started from <strong>the</strong>ir settlement in<br />

Tennessee to make a preaching tour into Kentucky. Their first labors were with a Presbyterian<br />

<strong>Church</strong> on Red River, where remarkable effects attended <strong>the</strong>ir labors, and excited such general<br />

interest that, at <strong>the</strong>ir next meeting, on Muddy River, many distant families came with wagons and<br />

camped in <strong>the</strong> woods. This was, in fact, <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> religious "camp-meetings" in <strong>the</strong> United<br />

States. The co-operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs, though <strong>of</strong> different creeds, presented a grateful example<br />

<strong>of</strong> Christian fellowship, and <strong>the</strong> settlers, <strong>of</strong> whatever faith, gladly copied it, so that <strong>the</strong> earliest<br />

camp-meetings were catholic or "union meetings," composed <strong>of</strong> Presbyterians, Methodists, and<br />

nearly every sect in <strong>the</strong> country. They soon became general through all <strong>the</strong> Western Territories, and,<br />

at last, throughout <strong>the</strong> nation and Upper Canada. Ten, twenty, or more thousands attended <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

devoting usually a week exclusively to religious exercises, living in tents or booths, which were<br />

arranged in circles around a rude pulpit or platform, and were illuminated at night by torches or<br />

pine-knots, and governed by prescribed rules and a temporary police. The poetic grandeur <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

primitive forest, lit up at night by <strong>the</strong> stars above and <strong>the</strong> torches below, resounding with hymns<br />

which seemed like "<strong>the</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> many waters;" <strong>the</strong> powerful eloquence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> itinerants, who could<br />

hardly fail, in such circumstances, to reach <strong>the</strong>ir maximum ability; <strong>the</strong> opportunities <strong>of</strong> social<br />

greeting afforded by such assemblings to <strong>the</strong> dispersed settlers; and, above all, <strong>the</strong> religious<br />

enthusiasm which such unwonted and protracted exercises could not fail to produce, rendered <strong>the</strong><br />

camp-meeting immediately a favorite occasion, and drew <strong>the</strong> people, as in armies, from all distances<br />

within two or three hundred miles. They soon bore <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> "general camp meetings" from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

catholic character, as combining all sects. As <strong>the</strong>y were Presbyterian as well as, or even more than<br />

Methodist in <strong>the</strong>ir origin, Presbyterian clergymen were generally active in <strong>the</strong>m. A great one was<br />

held in Cambridge, seven miles from Paris, Ky., soon after <strong>the</strong>ir introduction, which produced a<br />

general sensation; thousands <strong>of</strong> persons were present from all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, and even from Ohio;<br />

it continued a week. Hundreds fell to <strong>the</strong> earth as dead men under <strong>the</strong> preaching. At ano<strong>the</strong>r, held
