Evelyn S. Batterson
May 26, 1941 –
September 19, 2005
Years roll by and memories fade
And dear friends pass away.
While old folks sit in rocking chairs
And dream of yesterday.
I dream of her and the life we had
And in spite of all the tears
I wouldn’t trade it for another life
Not in a million years.
Looking back through life, at least
for me
Shouldn’t be all that sad
When I think of all those golden days
And the good times that we had.
But when you get roses in this life,
The thorns come with ‘em too
And too many thoughts of by gone days
Can take an awful toll on you
I know I’ll never see her smile
Or hear her laugh again
And I’ve somehow got to learn to live
With just a real nice eight by ten
When shadows fall and evening calls
And my demons come out again.
You’ll find me there – sitting in my chair
Stare’en at that eight by ten
She smiles at me – from across the room
From that real nice eight by ten.
Passion for
cooking nets
new career
When she tired
of her 9-5 job,
Lisa Sizemore
decided to take a
new direction
By Ben Orcutt
Contributing Writer
Lisa Sizemore
has been cooking
since she was a
teenager and for the
past couple of years
as a professional
and she says she
doesn’t plan on quitting
anytime soon.
“I can’t imagine ever
getting tired of cooking,”
the 56-year-old Sizemore
said during a recent interview
in the kitchen of her
Powhatan County home
that she shares with her
husband Bill and their
19-year-old daughter,
Robin, who’s a sophomore
at VCU.
A Richmond native,
Sizemore attended St.
Catherine’s School and
went on to the University
of Virginia where she
earned an undergraduate
degree in general and
comparative literature in
1978.
After working in retail
and in the insurance industry,
Sizemore spent 13
years working for the U.
S. Department Agriculture’s
Natural Resources
Conservation Service.
“And I really enjoyed
the people there,” she
said, “but then at 46 I realized
that I was sitting at
my desk and sort of nodding
off and wondering,
‘You know, this is not really
what God intended
for me to be doing.’”
Sizemore said she
started a Mary Kay business
and when Robin was
in the band at Powhatan
High School, she began
cooking for band-related
events.
“And at that point,
that’s where I started
building the confi dence
to start thinking about actually
doing this on my
own as a business and so
far it’s been working really
well fl ying under the
radar so to speak,” Sizemore
said. “Word of
mouth has been working
really well.”
Sizemore said she’s
still working on a formal
name for her business,
even though her business
license lists her as a chef.
“I am not a chef,” she
said. “I am a cook.”
Sizemore said her late
mother, Rose Manzelli,
taught her how to cook
and she also was inspired
by her mother’s oldest
sister, her Ant Lena, who
was the head of the dining
hall at Yale.
Sizemore said she
