and roughly questioned
by a Sheriff’s
deputy, required to show
their identifi cation, and detained
while the plates on
their car were run through
the system.
According to Powhatan
Undersheriff Chris De-
Hart, the deputy was merely
doing his job. There had
been recent break-ins in
the neighborhood, the
three canvassers did not
live in the neighborhood,
and they were driving a car
not known in the area.
These, DeHart said, were
likely the reasons that they
were stopped and questioned.
That they were
black, he said, had nothing
to do with it.
And that they were canvassing?
The deputy
couldn’t know if that was
the truth or a lie. “People
come up with all sort of
ruses to go door-to-door,”
DeHart said. “A lot of it
targets the elderly. While
one person’s at the front
door, the other can be
around back robbing you
blind.”
Sgt. Wayne Holland,
who has been a member of
the Virginia State Police
force for forty years, said
that in his agency an offi -
cer would be fi red if he or
she were known to discriminate
based on race.
One thing to note, however,
is that both DeHart
and Holland are white. The

black. This made their perspectives
on the matter a
little bit different.
While both Almond
and Baskerville remain, of
course, fi rmly on the side
of law enforcement, they
can both recall plenty of
incidents where they felt
themselves unnecessarily
watched, stopped, or questioned.
Baskerville recalled
driving his car – a Lexus –
to Richmond’s Church Hill
neighborhood a few years
ago to visit his grandmother.
He was stopped by a
police offi cer. He wasn’t
speeding, his registration
was up-to-date – the only
thing he was guilty of, he
said, was being a black
man in a nice car in an area
known to have a lot of drug
activity. The cop, he said,
likely assumed that he
must be a drug dealer.
Still, Baskerville said,
he did the right thing when
the cop stopped him. He
complied. He was polite.
He answered the offi cer’s
questions, showed the offi
cer his license and registration,
waited patiently
for the policeman to see
for himself that there was
nothing illegal going on
and then he went on his
merry way.

fi lm a police encounter in
which you feel you are being
mistreated. However,
Almond said that probably
should be discreet.
Also, the offi cers said,
don’t call a lawyer at the
scene. For one thing, it’s
highly unlikely one will
show up immediately .
Comply at the time of your
detainment or arrest, they
said, and then – if you feel
it’s necessary – fi le an offi
cial complaint and look
for an attorney.

was pleased with the forum
and hopes to hold another
in the spring. She
said she would like to encourage
more young people
to come, as they are the
ones who could stand to
benefi t the most from such
an event.
“They just get panicky
when they see a police offi

to know these folks are out
to protect them.”

Drinkard pleaded
not guilty to the probation
violation, stating
that he’d enrolled in a
drug treatment program,
but hadn’t been
able to attend regularly
because he was working
three jobs – landscaping,
brick masonry,
and dishwashing. “I
struggle with an addiction
to marijuana,” he
told the court. “It may
not be physical, but I
just can’t keep my
hands off the stuff.”
Beasley told
Drinkard that if he had
the time to call his drug
dealer he ought to have
had the time to call his
probation offi cer. “Mr.
Drinkard thinks he can
go through life conning
everybody,” Beasley
said. “He needs to go
back to prison.”

cashing a fraudulent
check at Powhatan’s
Essex Bank in the
amount of $1,984.43.
After the bank gave her
the money, an employee
became suspicious
of the check, which
came from the Aylett,
Va.-based company
Tennis Courts, Inc.
When the bank called
the company, they were
told that no check had
been issued to Wylie
and that the company
had no affi liation with
her. Wylie will re-appear
in court October 9
for a pre-sentence report.
