Company 1 unveils new
monument to fallen heroes
As soon as he saw the stone,
Powhatan Volunteer Fire Chief Carroll
Smith knew he wanted it.
The monument, depicting a fi re
helmet, a pair of boots and a tablet
inscribed with the Fireman’s Prayer,
had been in storage for years, said
Smith. “I’d been after it for a while,”
he said, and last week he fi nally
managed to get it.
The timing, it seems, could not
have been better: by the time Smith
and his fellow volunteers had wrestled
the heavy stone carving into
place in front of the Company 1 Fire
House on Mann Road, the anniversary
was just days away.
In honor of those who lost their
lives that day 11 years ago, Company
pointed out that the piece is really
a tribute to all brave fi refi ghters
everywhere. “Having it here gives
us a way to honor fallen fi refi ghters
all year round,” he said.
