Indians: PHS to host Greensville Friday
Continued from page 1B
er hand, found the endzone with
relative ease. Their second touchdown
of the night came on a 29yard
screen pass from quarterback
Christian Hackenberg (the topranked
quarterback in the nation
and a Penn State commit) to running
back Nick King. Their third
touchdown also came via-King, this
time on an 18-yard run. He fi nished
the night with 17 carries for 143
yards, three rushing touchdowns
and one receiving touchdown.
Amazingly, he’s not even Fork
Union’s fi rst-string tailback. That
would be Jeremy Bell, who didn’t
make the trip to Powhatan due to
undisclosed reasons.
The Powhatan defense fi nally got
to Hackenberg on Fork Union’s fi -
nal drive of the fi rst half. Hackenberg
heaved a deep ball down the
sideline but undershot his mark by
about fi ve yards, allowing Norris
Goode to leap up and make an acrobatic
interception. But the Powhatan
offense only had enough time for
two plays, and the Indians went into
the locker room trailing 21-0.
The Indians captured their fi rst
fi rst-down of the game on their initial
drive of the second half. On
fourth-and-short from the Fork
Union 41, Jackson sliced through
the defense for a six yard gain. On
the very next play, Joe Lewis scrambled
36 yards for Powhatan’s fi rst
touchdown, effectively cutting FU-
MA’s lead to 21-7.
After holding the Blue Devils’
offense to a three-and-out, it seemed
as though the Indians were poised
to fi ght their way back into the
game. But the offense stalled on
three consecutive plays. The Fork
Union offense then countered with
a 9 play, 73-yard drive that was
capped off with a 30-yard touchdown
run by King. The extra point
was blocked, but the touchdown
gave FUMA a commanding 27-7
lead. The rout was offi cially on.
Fork Union would tack on two
more touchdowns - a 39-yard touchdown
pass from Hackenberg to
Christian Brown and a 5-yard run
by Nick King - to stretch their lead
to 41-7. Powhatan scored twice as
well, although both touchdowns
came with the game well out of
reach.
The difference in quarterback
play between the two teams could
not have been more polarized.
Hackenberg completed 10-of-15
passes for 149 yards, two touchdowns
and one interception. The
three Powhatan quarterbacks - Garrett,
Lewis and freshman Peyton
Mawyer - were a combined 3-of-16
for 36 yards and an interception.
Powhatan’s most successful drive
was orchestrated by Mawyer, although
it came against Fork Union’s
second-team defense. With time
ticking away in the fi nal frame,
Mawyer, with a little help from running
back L.J. Jackson, led the Indians
on a 14-play, 60-yard drive
topped off with a 2-yard run by
Jackson. Mawyer showed a few
glimpses of athleticism, but looked
very green overall. It was Jackson’s
second touchdown of the season.
The loss is a tough one to swallow,
for sure, but by no means does
it spell complete disaster for the Indians.
Since Fork Union is a private
school, the loss doesn’t factor in to
Powhatan’s fi nal VHSL power ranking.
So, for all intents and purposes,
this game was nothing more than a
glorifi ed exhibition, a chance for
Powhatan to compete against toptier
talent without having the outcome
impact their place in the
standings. Also, let’s not forget that
the 2011 Indians started 1-2 before
reeling off nine consecutive victories
and reaching the Region II
championship game.
The Indians will host former
Southside district foe Greensville
(0-3) next Friday. The Eagles closest
game to date is a 43-20 loss to
Bruton during the fi rst week of the
season.
